Year 5- Tuesday 23rd February

Good morning

Morning task

Maths- 75 minutes

Here is the video- remember it’s here to help so use it!

We’re continuing to learn about perimeter today,  a 1d measurement of length (around the outside of a shape).

https://vimeo.com/477525533

Now try this.

Challenges

English- 90 minutes – Zoom at 11 o’clock

Here is the next picture from our new story. It shows Will and some of the other boys after their football match.

Think about what you can see. What do you think the boys are saying to each other?

Now read the text below.

Answer the following questions (we will go through these together in the Zoom session).

  1. Who was watching the football match?
  2. How do we know that the two teams got on and were friendly with each other?
  3. When do the opposing team say they will come back and beat Will’s team?
  4. How are the opposing team getting back to their village? What does this suggest about them?
  5. How might Will be feeling?

Now let’s look at what we know about Will from yesterday. Would you add anything to this or move any of the statements from yesterday?

Writing task – Write the next extract of Will’s diary. This should be based around details of what we have read and discussed today. This extract should follow straight on from the one written yesterday and should be around 50 – 100 words.

Science- 90 minutes- zoom at 2.00

    The old men
    2. they were changing and joking together and talking on the way to the village
    3. after the war
    4. by walking they’re most likely healthy and fit.
    5. happy or sad depends if he won or he loss
Boys jumped around the net of the goal as the old men sat down next to the tree whilst they clapped, the bell at the top of the tall very tall church struck five. The game was over, so the two teams changed and joked around until the other team described “that we’ll beat you next game straight after the war so be ready.” And then they walked 5miles back to the village.

Who was watching the football match? Some boys and men
How do we know that the two teams got on and were friendly with each other? Because they joked together
When do the opposing team say they will come back and beat Will’s team? After the war
How are the opposing team getting back to their village? Walking
What does this suggest about them? That they’re all good mates
How might Will be feeling? Happy and exhausted

      Diary –

Today we won the match 1-0 against the other team. It was good fun and we had a laugh with our friends. One of them even said they would beat us after the war. We’ll see if that’s true! Anyway, we had a bit of a laugh and a joke around until they had to walk home, which is five miles away! I went home, had some food and drink then chilled because I was so exhausted.

    3) After the war.
    4) They walk and it suggests that they aren’t the richest.
    5) Proud because he scored a goal and won the game

    Dear Diary
WE WON THE GAME, And I have scored the winning goal! The next match ‘after the war’ (it’ll probably be earlier) could be tighter so I should train with my team. After that I’ve got nothing to do except wait… Untill next year? Well I have to be prepared!

    1. A group of small boys and a few old men were watching the football match.
    2. As they were having jokes together.
    3. After the war that was going on (most likely WW2)
    4. By walking the five miles, this suggests that they were poor.
    5. Happy and sad, he could be sad as he is poor or someone he knows had died, happy as he won the match.

I think I would move “he plays in a football team with his friends” to the second circle as we don’t know if they are his friends.

Continued diary-> After the match me, some of my friends and the opposing team had a little joke and had some fun. During the match the crowd was only a group of children and a few elderly people. The opposing team said that they will beat us after the war, but I didn’t think so. The opposing team started their 5 mile walk home and so did my team.

For Q1, who exactly was watching the match? It does tell us in the text.
For Q2, the boys also laugh and talk together.
For Q3, they talk about coming back after the war.
For Q4, how do you you know they are not rich? Walking might well be the only way they had to travel.

While imagining, I thought about what happened and for my future. The opposing team looked revengeful to play. Well even though I was exhausted, the opposing team looked like that they could play more but I appeared as that it was getting late. As we took a rest, we changed and helped our self. Later on, we played and enjoyed. As soon it was time, the church struck 5o’ clock. Before the opposing team left they smiled and looked at the log we sat on and went. I thought that one day it will get better.

    English 50-100 words

    Dear diary

The church clock struck five and the game was over. I was happy as I scored the winning goal but was too exhausted to celebrate . My friends and I took shelter under a tree to get out of the burning sun and have a drink of water. We all was joking and laughing and the opposing team said they will beat is next time. I then packed up my football kit and stared to walk the five miles home, but I was not sure if my feet could carry me there.

    Will
