Year 5- Wednesday 27th January

Good morning everyone!

Here is our forest poem from yesterday!

In the forests far from Athens,

Far away from Theseus’ court

Columns of wood instead of marble,

Leaves and stars instead of lights.

The beautiful leaves are soft and green,

I can hear the lovely trees waving,

The feeling of the ancient water, make me feel softer,

The forest is like heaven with angels singing up in every tree.

At night the forest is spooky,

full of darkness from the outside.

Fairies would enter every day, the forest of magic.

But as it was night, the fairies were bright.

Here come Titania and Oberon walking through the moonlit forest,

arguing about the changeling boy in whispering voices.

The King and Queen, enter the bright forest to see a sight –

His Puck, and her Fairy together.

Puck, a Servant of Oberon

Some call him the naughty fairy

He causes trouble of all sorts,

In the forests dark and shady,

Oberon begged his queen for a changeling baby.

Not for thy fairy Kingdom she replied,

Fairies skip hence.

Morning task

Maths- (75 minutes)

Today we’re going to have a look at line graphs.

As we saw earlier in the week pictograms and bar charts deal with discrete data (remember the pizzas) but line graphs deal with continuous data.  That means the data is related.   So if we took the temperature of an ice cube as it melted-  if it was -1 degrees at 8 o’clock and had reached 1 degree by 8.30,  then at around 8.15 we can estimate that it would have been around 0 degrees.   The change in temperature is related to each other-  unlike the pizza flavours.

Challenge

English- 90 minutes

Task 1-

Have a listen to the text again, then reread or read along with me.

fairies with audio

Challenge-  if you haven’t recorded yourself reading along you can still do this!

Task 2- minimum 100 words

Write up the next part of the story.

So far you should have

  •  Description of the city of Athens
  •  Egeus dragging Hermia into court and his speech (plus Hermia’s reaction!)
  •  Hermia and Lysander meeting in the marketplace to plan their escape
  •  Helena meeting them and deciding to tell Demetrius.

Each of these paragraphs should be around 100 words.

Now we’re going to add the description of the forest,  and the discussion between Oberon and Titania-  this should take at least 100 words.

Don’t forget I would like to see-

  • fronted adverbials,
  • triple sentences,
  • direct speech (with “” ),
  • reported speech,
  • a good range of punctuation () ! ? , ; … –
  •  similes
  • metaphors
  • onomatopoiea
  •  description of the forest-  sights, sounds, smells, feelings- use your planning from Monday and the poetry work from yesterday.

Here is mine so far I’ve only just started the fairy section-  can you write yours before I complete mine?

The curtain rises on Athens,  a white and golden city, bright and joyous as a wedding cake.  Everywhere there was celebration for the marriage of Duke Theseus to Hipployta, the Queen he had won in battle.  Their happiness spread through the whole of the city.  People had decorated their houses with flowers and left lamps burning in their windows at night,  so that the streets twinkled like a city of stars.  Everyone seemed joyful and excited as they prepared to celebrate.  But in the midst of this happiness , there was a speck of misery, like a sour plum…

A few days before the much awaited wetting, Egeus  (a well respected citizen of Athens) bought his daughter, Hermia, to the court of Duke Theseus.   Grabbing her by the arm Egeus dragged her in front of all the noble guests gathered there.   He explained that he was angry with her because she was refusing to marry the man of his choice, Demetrius.   He complained that another man, Lysander, had bewitched Hermia and won her over with gifts and trinkets.   Egeus demanded the Duke uphold the law and allow him the right to force Hermia to marry the man of his choice, or die.   Duke Theseus did not seem happy with this, but he could not deny the law. Hermia must marry Demetrius. Or die!

As the moon danced with the clouds high above the slumbering city below, a cloaked figure flitted from building to building. Furtively, tentatively, apprehensively the figure looked around before moving on. Her heart was pounding and she felt like the hand of her tyrannical father would reach out and seize her at any second. Finally she reached the relative safety of the marketplace and fell. shivering with fear, into the arms of the waiting Lysander.

Hermia sobbed breathlessly, “I won’t marry him, I would rather die”.   Lysander comforted her and explained his plan.   They would both escape into the forests outside of Athens and get married in secret. Hermia agreed and at once felt calmer, her heartbeat returning to normal.

Just then Helena appeared on the other side of the marketplace and, seeing the pair of lovers walked towards them.   Helena was feeling lost and alone, for she was desperately in love with Demetrius. But he would not look at her, treating her with contempt and rudeness. Hermia tried to console Helena by revealing Lysander’s plot. If Hermia left the city, surely Demetrius would notice Helena ,she reasoned.   Hermia and Lysander bid farewell to Helena and set off for their new life in the forest, together.

But Helena, instead of feeling comforted by their news, felt torn. Maybe he would notice her with Hermia gone, she thought. But on the otherhand…. maybe he would blame her, Helena, for the loss of his beloved Hermia. What if she told him what they were going to do? What if she told him they were going to escape? He could prevent them from leaving. Then he must at least be grateful to Helena. Then he must notice her for once. Hermia would not be happy, but if Demetrius would just talk to her for once, it would be worth the cost of her friendship. Wouldn’t it?

Just outside the city was a forest.  Not far by distance,  but another world in every other sense.  In this wild wood, fairies roamed and magic swirled around in the very air,  twirling around the branches, rippling through the leaves.  A slim, lithe figure danced through a grove of hemlock trees; twirling and whirling around,  playing a tune on a small, wooden pipe as he went.  Suddenly he stopped.  Aware that he was no longer alone, he noticed another fairy,  flittering by the piney leaves of a twisted hemlock tree, collecting the youngest and freshest into a pouch hung by her hip.  Looking somewhat like a hummingbird hovering over a flower she was entranced by her task.

Remember to read through what you’ve already written so you can check your new paragraph doesn’t repeat vocab/ phrases you’ve used a lot already, and that it flows nicely.

Egeus does not trust Lysander but he does know Demetrius is a good man, more than Lysander, this is what he thinks. The reason why Egeus hates Lysander is because he tries to trick Hermia by sending her love token and sweet messages. This makes Egeus angry because he has already chosen Demetrius to marry Hermia and if Hermia doesn’t marry Demetrius, she will die. Egeus asks the Duke to help him with Hermia, Demetrius and Lysander and to tell Hermia the consequences of what will happen if she doesn’t follow the law.

Hermia and Lysander meet up at the marketplace with fruits, people, tents and water. People are shouting ”Come and get your fruit!” The marketplace was extremely noisy. ”We need to go some where else.” said Hermia.
”Its fine,we can get food and water and anyway its just noisy thats all.” Lysander said to Hermia,” We need to talk about our plan to get you away from Athens.”
“Oh…okay. But where would we go?” Asked Hermia.
Suddenly, Helena walks through a crowd of people to unexpectedly find Hermia and Lysander in the middle of their secret plan.
“Oh fair Helena, what are you doing here?” asks Hermia. “I am not fair Hermia, Demetrius does not think so.” Helena says, sadly. Lysander speaks up and says excitedly, “Do not worry, Helena, once we leave Athens, you can have Demetrius for yourself!”
Hermia and Lysander then start walking away through the crowded marketplace, leaving Helena with her thoughts.
“What shall I do? Risk our friendship and tell Demetrius their plans?
But finally, with Hermia gone, Demetrius will be mine!
This is the only way I can get him to fall in love with me!”

Deep in the dark forest, the moonlight is reflecting off an owl’s eyes making them glow and captures your eye. It is sitting up on a tree branch and making a ‘whoing’ noise. Then, a fairy and Puck appear out of nowhere talking to each other about Oberon, Titania and the changeling boy.
“Where have you been today, fairy?” asks Puck. “I have been everywhere today.” answers the fairy. “How are our king and queen doing?” she asks. “Oh, poor Oberon is very jealous of that changeling boy.” says Puck, sadly.
Suddenly, they could hear rustling of leaves and angry whispers coming towards them. “Quick thats them coming!” whispers Puck and he and the fairy disappear into the shadows.

The forest was dark. Really dark… The canopy covered and blocked all the sunlight. There two fairies met. Puck (aka the naughty fairy) and another fairy, the servant of the King and Queen, Oberon and Titania.
“Where are you going!?” asked Puck
“Past the seven lakes, and over the seven mountains. I go everywhere…” replied the fairy and added sarcastically “…My friend.”62
“What are you doing here my dear fairies” said two mysterious figures as if they knew they were there.
Who’s there mermured both of the fairies. The figures showed themselvesas they stepped out of the shadow. By the fairies expressions they would rather not know who were the figures
    “Oberon and Titania” explained Oberon.
    “And our trains!” added Titania.

There was a city called Athens, everyone love’s celebrations and respect the important people in Athens and are very creative but not every one gets what they want not even the most important woman, man, child gets what they always
want. Athens described as the city with a golden floor as if people had the golden touch but thats just how to describe it. Athens as day starts and ends like a book that has 1 page and you need to read it to end the day and to start the day you need to read it backwards but that practicly happens in every city country. Athens the fun of you dreams but there are still bad people in Athens who boss people around such as egus.as the day gone by,
Egus the practicly the devil’s father dragged his daughter hermia to the court showing no mercy even though she’s his daughter. He talked and talked so hermia can marry demitrius and lyslander talked to defend hermia so he can marry her after all she loves him back.egus couldn’t stop talking about hermia and demitrius till hermia got married to demitrius. Egus like a monsters roar he was talking business but hermia was talking rights finally people agreed with Egus lyslander and hermia new they needed a plan. when lyslander and hermia new it was time to plan, they went to the market place cleared with 0.00 people there but lyslander and hermia they planned and Helena came she decided it was a good idea to tell demitrius wich was the worst idea

      Question 1 is brilliant.
      Let’s look at question 2
The graph is showing how far the cyclist rides 30 miles in 10 hours.
So the first task is to work out what goes in the labels on the vertical and horizontal axis.
So for the vertical axis there are 6 intervals (gaps) between 0 and 30, so we need 30 divided by 6 = ? So we are counting up in ?
for the horizontal axis there are 5 intervals between 0 and 10, so we need 10 divided by 5 = ? So we are counting up in ?

    English Task 2

After thinking for a while Helena rushed off to find Demetrius to tell them of the news about Lysander and Hermia planning something that would see them leave the city of Athens, She was worried that her friendship would be ruined but it was the risk she was willing to take to get the attention of Demetrius the one she was in love with.

Not far from the City of Athens was the forest that Lysander and Hermia planned to escape to ths was a totally different surrounding to the city, This was a magical place that had fairies in every part and the magic could be felt by all that entered. A slim figure liked to play on his wooden pipe dancing between the trees until he felt a strange feeling he was no longer alone in the forest there was another fairy with him, the fairy was collecting the leaves from the nearby hemlock tree she was hardly working at her task and was hoovering above the leaves she so carefully collected.

When Demetrius came, Hermia and Lysander hid in the bushes. Then Demetrius said to himself they probably went further into the woods, so he walked further into the woods.”Phew, that was
close!” they said but they didn’t know that this was home to the fairy kingdom. Then helena came along and said “where are they? I just want to feel apreciated by Demetrius”, and walked
of. A few hours later, Puck came along whith another fairy talking about their king and queen, Oberon and Titania. They are now angry with eachother. They were talking about their
argument in relation to a young boy. Oberon wanted him as his bodyguard and Titania wanted him to grow up like a normal boy. Then Oberon and Titania suddenly met up in the same location.
Then they had a smaller argument.

Good first effort Owen. But the Demetrius/ Hermia/ Lysander/ Helena part happens in the market place in Athens one day.
The fairies are in the forest the next day.
Can you add some time conjunctions and description of the setting to make this clearer?

As the moon rose, far away from the madness of Athens, was a forest that no one had discovered. It was full of secrets that will blow you mind! The great lush leaves grew really quick until it gets creepy with the unknown creatures making strange noises. The air was fresh but lot of annoying insects start following you. The weather was calm as large blue ocean with birds singing but in the inside the forest was an impossible thing to happen. The queen, Titania, was a kind queen but she had a problem. A king called Oberon wanted something. He wanted a changeling boy from Titania so he can have a servant but he had one, Puck?
King Oberon pleaded until something happened!

In the luscious forest there are diamond raindrops and emerald leaves. The colourful birds🐦 flying high.
Wait! Did you hear that? “Tweet tweet”. That was a hummingbird singing to impress his lady.
The branches of the tall trees are spreading like a giant roof. The colour of the leaves are like enchanted moss, sparkling in the sunlight and then at night is changes into the silver shine in the moonlight. Reflection of the wilderness in the water on the leaves, makes in even more magical. The sunrays falling on the meadow, transform it into the brightest star of the universe. The fairies live happily in the massive(MASSIVE) forest, where there is peace and happiness. There are a lot of animals in this forest like foxes, fish 🐟 bears and more. They all live in this tranquil and peaceful place in a perfect harmony.

Good start Mia, but we need the forest scene with Puck and the fairy, and then Oberon and Titania.

A mile from the city was a dark and spooky forest where magical things happened. The trees were swaying and the squirrels were chattering as the leaves where rustling. Voices can be heard wispering within the trees. Oberon and Titania could be seen under the moonlight arguing. Puck and the fairy over hear the arguement and move in closer to see what was happening.
I do but beg a little changeling boy to be my henchmen.” Said Oberon.
“Not for thy fairy kingdom” Said Titania in reply as she left the woods.
