Year 5- Tuesday 19th January

Good morning year 5.  Our email is yearfive@lingsprimary.org.uk

Morning task

2 x 3 = 6

20 x 3  = 60

20 x 30 = 600

What do you notice?      What do you wonder?   Is there a pattern?

Can you use what you’ve found to work out…

40 x 20                            50 x 30                              90 x  70

Maths- ( 75 minutes)

Today we are practising 2 x 2 digit multiplication again.   Pick the level you feel is going to stretch you.     If you want to send me the first 2 or 3 so I can check you are on the right track that’s fine.

There’s a powerpoint and last weeks video to rewatch.

Gaining confidence

Something to think about

Challenge yourself

  1. 42 x 25
  2.  54 x 28
  3.  82 x 32
  4.  50 x 28
  5.  90 x 29
  6.  64 x 52

English (90 minutes)

Task 1- reread the text

(challenge-  record yourself reading the script (you can get other people to take on the 2 other characters) and email to me.

How

Task 2

What does Helena mean “fair again unsay”?

Why does Hermia think Helena will be comforted by her leaving Athens?

Is Helena pretty?  How do you know?

Why  doesn’t Helena care that she is pretty?

What is the “dear expense” that Helena is willing to pay?

Task 3

Think about Hermia.   She needs to make a decision about whether to tell Demetrius or not.   Can you come up with at least two examples for each of these.   Then put them together to create a speech Helena might say.

  •  a question she might ask herself (for example-  What is Helena finds out and never forgives me? )
  •  an exclamation she might say (for example-   What a perfect opportunity to get Demetrius to notice me! )
  •  a sentence she might say (for example-   I have no choice- it is the only way I can get him.

Science (90 minutes)

We have a zoom meeting at 2 for Science.

This week we will be testing again so try and gather some of the following

aluminium foil,  some fabric (a scarf or sock etc would be fine) cling film, newspaper,  bubble wrap

A tray full of ice cubes would also be really useful!  So if you can get hold of some that’s brilliant.  If not don’t panic,  cubes (or coins) of chocolate or butter or lard would work as well.

tuesday science

Make sure you know about thermal and electric conductors,  and boiling and melting.

    Don’t say beautiful
    She will have no rules
Through Athens I am thought as fair as she
She doesn’t care that she is fair because Demetrius thinks not so

I can’t tell him, our friendship is too precious!
But who needs friendship when they have love?
It is the only way for Demetrius to love me.
I can’t, what is Hermia finds out?

      Hi Kiran,
She is saying she can’t be pretty, if Demetrius doesn’t love her.
IF she does go and tell him, what will be the problem (the cost that she has to pay)

For task 3 it did say at least 6 sentences, including questions and exclamations. Can you have another look at this please?

Yes, we noticed that if we multiply one of the multipliers by 10, then the product is also multiplied by 10.
And however many zeros in the calculation then the product should have the same number of zeros.
This should help you to check your answers.

    I notice that from 2 it goes to 20 like 2×10 it’s x’ng the 2 by 10.
I wonder if you could take the 2 from 2×3 and add a 0 to the start it will still be the same number.
Yes there is a pattern that pattern goes 2 20and3 30.

    Task 2

What does Helena mean “fair again unsay”?
    I don’t know.

Why does Hermia think Helena will be comforted by her leaving Athens?
As Hermia and Lysander will fly a Place, Demetrius will never see Hermia again.

Is Helena pretty? How do you know?
Through Athens Helena is thought to be as fair as Hermia.

Why doesn’t Helena care that she is pretty?
NO as she loves Demetrius more than anything.

What is the “dear expense” that Helena is willing to pay?
The dear expense is that she wants thanks from Demetrius.

    Task 3
What will happen if anybody finds out whats happening?
This is a perfect plan to get away from my filthy dad!
Wait this is what I always wanted so Me and lysander will go into the woods tomorrow night.

      Hi Owen,
fair again unsay, means don’t call me pretty. Because either she thinks she is not pretty, or because she feels that being pretty is not enough to make Demetrius love her.

The dear expense is what it will cost her to get thanks from Demetrius. IF she tells him, it might cost her her friendship with Hermia.

    3. Helena is pretty I know that because it says everybody knows your pretty
    4. Helena does not care she is pretty because she just does not care

Hi Talal, your speech is great.

Have another think about the answers.
Unsay that fair means- don’t call me pretty. She feels she is not pretty- or that being pretty is not enough to make Demetrius love her.
Hermia thinks Helena will be comforted, because if Hermia leaves Athens, Demetrius might stop loving her and turn his attention to Helena instead.
Dear expense means the cost she might have to pay for telling Demetrius, and betraying Hermia. It might be the cost of her friendship.

Why does Hermia think Helena will be comforted by her leaving Athens? Because Helena then be with Demetrius

What shall I do? Risk our friendship?

What does Helena mean “fair again unsay”?
That it is not fair for Helena that Demetrius love Hermia

Why does Hermia think Helena will be comforted by her leaving Athens?
That if Demetrious become worried and tries to look for her, he will forget and Helena will have a chance to marry Demetrius

Is Helena pretty? How do you know?
Yes or no-Maybe- because Demetrius loved Helena for long time-as you see he is attractive to pretty people so that was their relationship but maybe no because Demetrius does not pay attention to Helena which means that she is not that pretty.

Why doesn’t Helena care that she is pretty?
Because she thinks that loving Demetrious doesn’t have to be pretty and is worried about him worrying to Hermia.

What is the “dear expense” that Helena is willing to pay?
Is the relationship between Demetrious and Hermia to stop so she can pay back to Demetrious.

Running away will make her life much easier.
Running away will make Demetrious forget about Hermia.

    …BUT…

Hermia will be danger as the Duke, Theseus will start looking for her.
Demetrious will start looking for her and won’t forget.

Helena: “What if Demetrious won’t accept?”
Helena: Good Chance for Demetrious to change his mind!
Helena: Well, my chance is here.

Hi Hollie. Which bit don’t you understand?
Task 1 is to read through the text again.
Task 2 is to answer some questions about the text.
Task 3 is to imagine you are Helena. She needs to decide whether to tell Demetrius about Hermia and Lysander running away. Imagine the questions she might ask herself. What she might exclaim. Then write me a little speech- about 6 or so sentences to show what Helena is thinking.
      Does that help?

Okay, that’s fine. Yesterday’s task should help with your writing today, so if you can do it it would be good. But if you don’t have time, I’d rather see the longer piece of writing for today.

    English task 3

I must tell him or he will be devastated when he finds out.

What if I tell him and he still hates me. I can’t tell him as Hermia is my best friend.

My ice cube in the foil completely melted because the heat inside and the ice cube in the cloth has not fully melted, only a little bit because there is not much heat inside.

Great work COdy, foil is a thermal conductor, so it transmits the heat really well. So any heat in the room would travel through the foil and melt the ice cube.
