Good morning Year 6

I look forward to seeing you all on Zoom at 9:05am

Warm up challenge (15 minutes)

Spend some time playing a times tables game at:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/multiplication-and-division

Reading (20 minutes)

Have another read of the text from yesterday.

Fairies today are the stuff of children’s stories, little magical people with wings, often shining with light. Typically pretty and female, like Tinkerbell in Peter Panthey usually use their magic to do small things and are mostly friendly to humans.

We owe many of our modern ideas about fairies to Shakespeare and stories from the 18th and 19th centuries. Although we can see the origins of fairies as far back as the Ancient Greeks, we can see similar creatures in many cultures. The earliest fairy-like creatures can be found in the Greek idea that trees and rivers had spirits called dryads and nymphs. Some people think these creatures were originally the gods of earlier, pagan religions that worshipped nature. They were replaced by the Greek and Roman gods, and then later by the Christian God, and became smaller, less powerful figures as they lost importance.

Another explanation suggests the origin of fairies is a memory of real people, not spirits. So, for example, when tribes with metal weapons invaded land where people only used stone weapons, some of the people escaped and hid in forests and caves. Further support for this idea is that fairies were thought to be afraid of iron and could not touch it. Living outside of society, the hiding people probably stole food and attacked villages. This might explain why fairies were often described as playing tricks on humans. Hundreds of years ago, people actually believed that fairies stole new babies and replaced them with a ‘changeling’ – a fairy baby – or that they took new mothers and made them feed fairy babies with their milk.

While most people no longer believe in fairies, only a hundred years ago some people were very willing to think they might exist. In 1917, 16-year-old Elsie Wright took two photos of her cousin, nine-year-old Frances Griffiths, sitting with fairies. Some photography experts thought they were fake, while others weren’t sure. But Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer of the Sherlock Holmes detective stories, believed they were real. He published the original pictures, and three more the girls took for him, in a magazine called The Strand, in 1920. The girls only admitted the photos were fake years later in 1983, created using pictures of dancers that Elsie copied from a book.

Now answer the following questions:

  1. What are fairies typically?
  2. What do typical fairies use their magic for?
  3. Where do we get most of our modern ideas about fairies from?
  4. What did Pagan religions worship?
  5. What were fairies thought to be afraid of?
  6. Why were fairies described as ‘playing ticks on people’?
  7. What is a ‘changeling’?
  8. Which famous author believed that photos of fairies were real?
  9. Which idea or theory about fairies do you like most? Why?

Writing (50 minutes)

Today, we are going to look at the other characters from a Midsummer Night’s Dream – the fairies that live in the forest.

Take some time to read the information from the sheets below:

NPAT RSC Character Information – Oberon King of the fairies

NPAT RSC Character Information – Titania

NPAT RSC Character Information – Puck Oberon’s servant

Also have a look at these characters on the link below:

https://www.rsc.org.uk/shakespeare-learning-zone/a-midsummer-nights-dream/character/relationships

Task:

Choose one of these fairies and write a detailed character description.

Remember to include:

  • Information about their personality
  • What they might look like (use the character pictures to help)
  • Lots of descriptive language
  • Relative clauses
  • Expanded noun phrases

Maths (1 hour)

Starter challenge

Here are your Rapid Reasoning questions for today:

Main activity

Have a think back to yesterday – can you remember what types of charts and graphs we looked at?

Today we are going to use the same graphs but this time instead of putting data on to the graphs, you are going to answer questions about the data on the graphs.

Tally Charts and Frequency diagrams

A children’s shoe shop took a survey of their customers shoe size over one day. Here is a list of their responses.

4                 2                 2                 2                 1                 3                 1

2                 2                 3                 4                 1                 2                 3

2                 2                 1                 1                 3                 1                 3

5                 1                 2                 3                 4                 2                 1

Complete the table below using the data from the shoe shop.

Now answer these questions using the tally chart that you have created.

  1. Which shoe size was most popular?
  2. Which shoe size was the least popular?
  3. What was the largest shoe size?
  4. What was the smallest shoe size?
  5. How many more children had size 2 shoes than had size 4 shoes?
  6. How many fewer children had size 5 shoes than size 1 shoes?
  7. How many customers did the shop have on the day of the survey?
  8. Order the shoe sizes from most popular to least popular?

Bar charts

Have a look at this bar chart:

What do you notice about the numbers on the y-axis?

They don’t go up in 1s instead they go up in 100s.

On bar charts, we can go up in any number we want and we decide on this based on how much data we have.

We can still read the data to the exact number by using the little lines in between each number which we call intervals.

To work out what each interval represents, we simply need to count how many intervals are between each number and then divide that number by the number shown.

For the bar chart above the first number is 100.

There are 5 intervals between 0 – 100

100 divided by 5 is 20

Each interval represents 20

So you end up with this:

Now try these questions:

Interpreting bar charts

Spelling (15 minutes)

Can you correct the circled spellings below:

RE (1 hour)

Today’s question is:

What were the ten plagues God sent to the Egyptians?

Can you retell the sections of the story of Moses’ life from the last lesson?

Maybe tell someone in your family about his story.

Vocabulary:

Salvation – being saved from harm. In Christianity, it refers to being saved from sin and its consequences.

Plague – an infestation or invasion. In the story of the book of Exodus, the ten plagues are disasters inflicted on Egypt by God.

Locust – an insect like a grasshopper, that flies in swarms and which eats all of the plants in the area.

Spend some time reading through the ten plagues of Egypt:

Ten plagues

Read the text below:

Exodus 7

International Children’s Bible

The Lord said to Moses, “I have made you like God to the king of Egypt. And your brother Aaron will be like a prophet for you. Tell Aaron your brother everything that I command you. Then let him tell the king of Egypt to let the Israelites leave his country.  But I will make the king stubborn. Then I will do many miracles in Egypt.  But he will still refuse to listen. So, then I will punish Egypt terribly. And I will lead my divisions, my people the Israelites, out of that land.  I will punish Egypt with my power. And I will bring the Israelites out of that land. Then they will know I am the Lord.”

Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded them. Moses was 80 years old, and Aaron was 83, when they spoke to the king.

Aaron’s Walking Stick Becomes a Snake

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “The king will ask you to do a miracle. When he does, Moses, you tell Aaron to throw his walking stick down in front of the king. It will become a snake.”

So Moses and Aaron went to the king as the Lord had commanded. Aaron threw his walking stick down in front of the king and his officers. And it became a snake.

So the king called in his wise men and his magicians. With their tricks the Egyptian magicians were able to do the same thing. They threw their walking sticks on the ground, and their sticks became snakes. But then Aaron’s stick swallowed theirs. But the king was stubborn. He refused to listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

Watch the following clip:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zbsb9j6

Was it right that God sent the plagues to Egypt to free the Isralites?

Task:

Create a poster, information leaflet or something of your own choice to explain what the ten plagues were. Remember to include plenty of detail and pictures to help your reader understand.

PHSE (40 minutes)

I want you to think back to last week’s online safety lesson where I asked you to write down 5 ways to stay safe in the real world and the ‘online world’.

Also think about all the work that we have completed this year on online safety.

I want you to create something that younger children could use to help them learn about staying safe online.

You could create:

  • A quiz
  • A board game
  • A cartoon
  • Something of your own choice

Things you could use to help you:

  • Your own knowledge
  • https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/26136189
  • https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/13908828
  • Your own research

I don’t expect you to get it all completed today. We will be completing this over the next few weeks.

Your tasks today:

  • Decide what you will be making
  • Start planning it out i.e. if it is a board game, what will the board look like
  • Decide on the first set of questions.

Story time

Enjoy the next part of The Explorer

TT Rockstars

Continue with this week’s competition!

Well done for all of your hard work!

Miss Kinsella and Mrs Maruzza

Titania is a free minded fairy that doesn’t want any arguments but also does not want to take care of this changeling that Oberon wants. She holds a grudge and doesn’t let a man get in her way of what she wants to do.She doesnt care what people say she thinks she is the queen of fairies so they cant boss her around.
