Friday 26th June – Year 5

Hi Year 5 – it’s Friday!! Is it hot enough for you?

Remember that I can be contacted via e mails as well as on the blog. The address is

yearfive@lingsprimary.org.uk

Here are the final tasks for this week:

ICT – Online Safety at Home

Discuss the following scenario with an adult at home:

English

You are finding lots of information out about The Titanic.

For our  final piece of writing this week, I’d like you to imagine that you were on board the Titanic. Write your own diary entries describing the ship hitting the iceberg, the struggle for the lifeboats and finally, the sinking.

Think about the following:

  • Include information about the senses – not just what you can see.
  • What are you doing but also, what are other people doing?
  • Include your emotions – I would imagine that they would be very varied.
  • What are other people saying, shouting, screaming?
  • Where were you when you realised that there was trouble ahead? How did you try to navigate your way to safety?
  • Did you manage to get to the lifeboats?
  • When did you first realise that something was wrong?

Remember to use the extra information that I gave you for ideas. the ‘Sources’ document has the 2 testimonies included in them from 2 different ladies. I’ll attach them again below:

Maths

Our final piece of work on translation this week – we’ll move onto a different topic next week. There are 2 lessons today followed by some challenges for you to tackle – the lessons aren’t too long!

The following lesson is for you to watch – it describes position after translation:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/describe-position-after-translation-87505b

The second lesson links the work you have done on reflections AND translations:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-make-links-between-reflections-and-translations

Please let me know how the lessons go and tell me at least 2 things that you have learnt.

Here are some challenges for you to try – the answers are at the bottom but try to attempt them first before peeking!

Here are those all important answers – let me know how well you did.

Friday – Maths answers

Other learning

As we have been looking at ‘The Titanic’ this week and an obvious part of it’s history related to an iceberg, I thought you might find the following link interesting. There’s a fascinating video clip to watch too. As I sit here sweltering, I thought this might help to make you feel cooler!

You could try making your own iceberg at home:

Finally – I know you love a wordsearch so here you go!

Have a great weekend and I’ll speak again on Monday.

Take care,

Mrs Millard and Mrs Munro XX

    Dear diary ,
Today i was really tired writing this because I boarded titanic , it’s so big and so new it’s amazing I’m having the best time ever . It was me and my best friend, my mum and dad and my annoying little brother. We had to board a different part of the ship from other people, there were so many beautiful ladies in beautiful dresses with men carrying their luggage for them. They were so lucky, we just had the clothes we came in and a small bag each with our change of clothes and anything else my mum and dad needed. When we got on board we could smell the new paint, and the new floorboards, it was so light and so clean because everything was brand new. I felt so lucky as I know some people would not be able to experience this. We were taken to our room which was just big enough to fit us all in, my friend and I had to share a bed and my little brother was in the top bunk and mum and dad had their own small bed to share. We had a sink, a table, a place to put clothes and the beds. Today has been a busy day and I’m loki g forward to tomorrow so we can explore.

    Day 2
Dear dairy, today we explored the ship we played some really fun games , cards ,hide and seek ,hop scotch and hoopla it was so fun. We went out to the out side of the ship it was really calming listening to the water flow but I had a scary feeling inside me because we were in the middle of nowhere. When we went exploring we went everywhere we were allowed to go , then It came to lunch we went to a really cool place and there wasnt much choose I got jam sandwich and my best friend just got bread and butter , my little brother got an orange and mum and dad got a jam sandwich like me .

    Day 3 dear diary
Today started out a really good day we all had an apple for breakfast it was delicious and my dad had a bear from the bar but children weren’t aloud in the bar they had to eat somewhere else then we got in this little room and played a board came then finally it came to the best bit of the day lunch it was about 1:30pm when we had it so we where all really hungry then it got the evening it was time so go to bed .But then suddenly we fell out of bed it went pitch black it went silent we all started to worry , then a man comes running in shouting ‘weve hit an ice Berg’run so we got put are room running for safety and me and my little brother were pushed to the ground so we lost are mum and dad . But then a nice man helped us up and put us in a lifeboat but I was terrified o diint know where my best friend was or my mum but she was on another lifeboat with children I dont know but are dad was nowhere to be seen we was stuck on a lifeboat with strangers
    Day 4 dear diary
The ship had holes in at the bottom to it was going down I couldn’t stop crying and shouting dad emily but I couldn’t see or hear them .The ship started to tip so everyone screamed we are going to die. HELP HELP but no one answered in my corner of my eye I saw emily but it was to late she fell in the water with the ship I was never going to see her again and that’s how I’m here now stuck with stranger and my little brother 😭…

      Hi Evie,

Wow! Well done for a detailed diary entry. You included lots of details that you have learnt this week. Just double check as you write – punctuation and capital letters. the first sentence on Day 3 is very long too.

How have you been getting on with Maths over the past few weeks? You haven’t blogged so much about Maths and I wondered if you had had a chance to look at these tasks??

One day i was on a ship with my family and we were all having fun ( we were on first class) . The other family’s were having fun to we were looking at the calm sea and i could also smell it it smelt salty. until we hit an ice burg and the boat started to sink and we were all panicking and all of the nice feelings all turned bad. Then every one started to go everyone got upset then i suddenly fell.

      Hi Sadia,

Well done – remember that the word ‘I’ should always be a capital letter.

      Hi Sadia,

Double check Challenge 2 and 3. Challenge 5 – is it acute? You should be able to tell me how many degrees the angle is.

so we buy 2 second class the room was nice and I enjoyed it . the food was amazing the ship had 4 funnels but only 3 were working . then 1 night there was a big fat chunguss ice burg coming from north. it took long for the crew to turn around so the ship crashed into the ice burg every one panicked and there were not enough life bouts for every one but we were lucky that we had one .

Well done on your diary entry. Don’t forget to start sentences with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
