Year 5- Monday 22nd February
Good morning year 5.
I hope you all had a great holiday.
Don’t forget the email address is Yearfive@lingsprimary.org.uk

Maths- 75 minutes
This term we are going to start work on measure- with a focus on area and perimeter. Perimeter is a 1d measurement (measurement of length), around the outside of a shape.
Watch the video, pause it when you need to, rewatch it.
Now try the worksheet.
If you need a ruler and don’t have one, let me know!
Challenge
English- 90 minutes
We will be working through this together at the 11 o’clock Zoom. After this, you will be able to continue with the writing task independently.
This term, we will be reading a new text. Below is a picture from the first page of the first chapter.
What can you see? Look really carefully at the whole picture. Look for clues about the characters and the setting.
We will discuss your ideas in the Zoom session.
Now read the text below that goes with this picture.
Here are some questions about the text. Have a go at answering them.
- Who has just scored a goal?
- Why is the word “GOAL!” in capital letters and have an exclamation mark afterwards?
- What was going through his mind when he scored?
- What is the setting for this scene?
- In the last line, why does the writer use the word “familiar”?
Next, we are going to think about what we know about Will.
Below is a diagram that includes Will’s football shirt.
If you know something about Will that you feel is definitely true then this would be placed on the shirt inside the inner circle.
If you think something might be true but are not totally sure then this would be placed in the middle circle.
Anything that you think is less likely to be true should be placed on the outer circle.
You must have a reason for putting your idea in a particular place.
I will collect your ideas on the Zoom call and put them on the diagram. You do not have to blog them here.
YOUR WRITING TASK – Over the next few weeks, you will be writing entries to Will’s diary. Today, we would like you to write Will’s first entry which is based on what we have looked at and discussed today. You should write in the first person (as if you were Will). You should aim to write about 50-100 words.
You will have written diary entries before and later in the week we will go over their main features. Today, we would like you to just do your best!
Geography- 75 minutes

Another match, that I can add to the list of the ones I scored in. But I only wish that I scored for England, not for my team. My teammates covered me and the coaches (the ONLY ones out of the pitch)… The opposing teams coach was annoyed and my coach was joyous. I had fun celebrating my goal, as I knew that my team needed a goal. I wonder what will happen further on in this season. Mabye we’ll win?
Great work Franek. Your diary entry certainly captures the feelings of the match.

1. It is a adverb
2. if you add bly it is a adjective
It’s the other way around- terrible and legible are adjectives, they can describe a noun. The terrible monster, legible writing.
When we add the bly ending it transforms the words into adverbs.

If you look really carefully at 1a, the line is just past the half way mark (5mm) It is actually 1.6cm or 16mm. 1b, you are correct is 2.5 cm or 25 cm.

You have captured the basic details of Will’s day and the football match.
See if you can capture some of the other details such as the blue sky, the church and the countryside.

Will’s diary
Dear Diary,
Today I was at the field with lads and I cant believed what happened. I scored the most amazing goal you have ever seen! It was such a beautiful day with the blue sky so I couldn’t resist to play some footy on the pitch of Suffolk. I have a imagination of a giant and I thought I scored a goal for England. Where I live its so peaceful, the clouds are so fluffy. And my friends love to play football as well. I imagined after I scored that incredible goal that the crowd was praising for me but it ended up being my mates and these people behind the goal. The ball that I played with was legendary nobody would know how good I felt when I scored that goal.
I will write back tomorrow
Will

This is a terrific effort. You have included lots of the details from the picture and the text, and have captured the thoughts of a football-mad boy – which Will seems to be!
I have scored a goal in a foot ball mach with my friends. And two children watched me and Cheered for my goal. It was in a field again and I pretended I scored for England. I had a lot of fun playing and I scored lots of good goals for my team
Good effort Max. You have certainly captured the basic details of Will’s day.
I wonder if you could capture some of the other details from the text and picture, such as the blue sky, the church and the countryside.
Mr Bushell
Here comes the ball THAT WAS A GOOD KICK did I score? Did I score? YES *the crowd goes wild*in his imagination. That was amazing TEAM right? ”by the way are you okay?” Bill says to the goal keeper.
”yes i’m fine thanks” says the goal keeper ”ok next round please” says Bill. ”Good job everybody” says a person.
Hello Alex
Good effort. A diary would not contain much in the way of speech. It would mostly be the thoughts of the writer who is recounting events of that day.
Think about what Will would say about the goal he scored. How would he describe it?
Mr Bushell
1. Who has just scored a goal?
Will
2. Why is the word “GOAL!” in capital letters and have an exclamation mark afterwards?
Because the happiness of Will is so amazing in history.
3. What was going through his mind when he scored?
All the people cheering of his Goal.
4. What is the setting for this scene?
The setting is in a small Village
5. In the last line, why does the writer use the word “familiar”?
Because as the same place where he lives and is dreaming would be like.
Inner Part-
He lives in East England
He lives in a village
He is dreaming about his victory
He wish that he won for all of Suffolk
Outer Part-
He is around 20 years old
He is playing with a known team.
He is a normal Teenager
There is a large cloud upcoming.
Diary Entry-
As I played, I had feelings that I can score a goal and… I did! It appeared as I had future thinking powers which of course wasn’t real. As I looked, I was feeling as the future’s new football hero well I don’t know if I was going to enjoy this part of my life. But I will enjoy my life listening to those cheers but… It was a vast area of grass with few children looking feeling clumsy. Only if my life was real as I thought.
Hello Hargun
For Q2, the capital letters and exclamation mark show the joy of a goal being scored and the love of the game being played.
For Q3, he is also dreaming of playing for England.
Q4 – yes, definitely in the countryside.
Q5 – yes, it means he knows the area well as its where he lives.
For your diary entry, read it back and think about how it sounds. You have some good ideas but it feels like you’ve over-complicated what you are trying to say.

It was such a beautiful day with the blue sky so I couldn’t resist to play some footy on the pitch in Suffolk. Where I live its so peaceful, fields as far as the eye could see, lined with trees and shrubs. I scored a goal, I felt on top of the world as if I had just score for England. My friends love to play football too! I imagined after I scored that incredible goal that the crowd was praising for me, but in reality it was my friends and the people behind the goal. The ball that I played with was legendary, nobody would know how good I felt when the ball hit the back of the net.

You’re right Hargun. If we don’t begin to live sustainably we will do harm to many living organisms and, in fact, our whole planet!
Ben’s version of Will’s diary entry:
Dear Diary
After breakfast this morning, I met up with my friends down the road at the football field. One of them had brought a ball, so we played team games together and had fun practising. At one point, the keeper slipped over and I managed to just about kick the ball into the goal, scoring a point for my team. When it started to darken, I headed home and went to bed.
I’m looking forward to tomorrow.
