Year 5- Monday 22nd February

Good morning year 5.

I hope you all had a great holiday.

Don’t forget the email address is Yearfive@lingsprimary.org.uk

Morning task

  1. If 17 x 5 = 85,  then what does 17 x 500 = ?

1

Maths- 75 minutes

This term we are going to start work on measure-  with a focus on area and perimeter.   Perimeter is a 1d measurement (measurement of length),  around the outside of a shape.

Watch the video, pause it when you need to,  rewatch it.

https://vimeo.com/477523195

Now try the worksheet.

If you need a ruler and don’t have one,  let me know!

https://resources.whiterosemaths.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Y5-Autumn-Block-5-WO1-Measure-perimeter-2019.pdf

Challenge

English- 90 minutes

We will be working through this together at the 11 o’clock Zoom. After this, you will be able to continue with the writing task independently.

This term, we will be reading a new text. Below is a picture from the first page of the first chapter.

What can you see? Look really carefully at the whole picture. Look for clues about the characters and the setting.

We will discuss your ideas in the Zoom session.

Now read the text below that goes with this picture.

Here are some questions about the text. Have a go at answering them.

  1. Who has just scored a goal?
  2. Why is the word “GOAL!” in capital letters and have an exclamation mark afterwards?
  3. What was going through his mind when he scored?
  4. What is the setting for this scene?
  5. In the last line, why does the writer use the word “familiar”?

Next, we are going to think about what we know about Will.

Below is a diagram that includes Will’s football shirt.

If you know something about Will that you feel is definitely true then this would be placed on the shirt inside the inner circle.

If you think something might be true but are not totally sure then this would be placed in the middle circle.

Anything that you think is less likely to be true should be placed on the outer circle.

You must have a reason for putting your idea in a particular place.

I will collect your ideas on the Zoom call and put them on the diagram. You do not have to blog them here.

YOUR WRITING TASK – Over the next few weeks, you will be writing entries to Will’s diary. Today, we would like you to write Will’s first entry which is based on what we have looked at and discussed today. You should write in the first person (as if you were Will). You should aim to write about 50-100 words.

You will have written diary entries before and later in the week we will go over their main features. Today, we would like you to just do your best!

Geography- 75 minutes

Watch these videos.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zshp34j/articles/z62qy9q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw6uXh9yM54

Now work through the powerpoint.

georgraphy week 1

Spelling- 15 minutes

forcible-  forcibly

terrible- terribly

legible- legibly

irritable- irritably.

When a word ends ble,  what word class is it? (verb,  adverb,  pronoun, noun, adjective, determinter)

What about when we change the suffix to bly- what kind of word is it?

    Dear Diary
Another match, that I can add to the list of the ones I scored in. But I only wish that I scored for England, not for my team. My teammates covered me and the coaches (the ONLY ones out of the pitch)… The opposing teams coach was annoyed and my coach was joyous. I had fun celebrating my goal, as I knew that my team needed a goal. I wonder what will happen further on in this season. Mabye we’ll win?

Hi Max, Can you see on the rulers for question 1, there are smaller marks in between the numbers. The numbers are cenimetres, but the smaller marks are the millimetres. There are 10 mm to a cm.
If you look really carefully at 1a, the line is just past the half way mark (5mm) It is actually 1.6cm or 16mm. 1b, you are correct is 2.5 cm or 25 cm.
Can you check 1c for me carefully?

    Dear Diary,
Today I was at the field with lads and I cant believed what happened. I scored the most amazing goal you have ever seen! It was such a beautiful day with the blue sky so I couldn’t resist to play some footy on the pitch of Suffolk. I have a imagination of a giant and I thought I scored a goal for England. Where I live its so peaceful, the clouds are so fluffy. And my friends love to play football as well. I imagined after I scored that incredible goal that the crowd was praising for me but it ended up being my mates and these people behind the goal. The ball that I played with was legendary nobody would know how good I felt when I scored that goal.
    I will write back tomorrow

      Hello Alex

Good effort. A diary would not contain much in the way of speech. It would mostly be the thoughts of the writer who is recounting events of that day.

Think about what Will would say about the goal he scored. How would he describe it?

    1. Who has just scored a goal?
    Will

    2. Why is the word “GOAL!” in capital letters and have an exclamation mark afterwards?
Because the happiness of Will is so amazing in history.

    3. What was going through his mind when he scored?
All the people cheering of his Goal.

    4. What is the setting for this scene?
The setting is in a small Village

    5. In the last line, why does the writer use the word “familiar”?
Because as the same place where he lives and is dreaming would be like.

    Inner Part-
    He lives in East England
    He lives in a village
He is dreaming about his victory
He wish that he won for all of Suffolk

    Outer Part-
He is around 20 years old
He is playing with a known team.
    He is a normal Teenager
There is a large cloud upcoming.

    Diary Entry-
As I played, I had feelings that I can score a goal and… I did! It appeared as I had future thinking powers which of course wasn’t real. As I looked, I was feeling as the future’s new football hero well I don’t know if I was going to enjoy this part of my life. But I will enjoy my life listening to those cheers but… It was a vast area of grass with few children looking feeling clumsy. Only if my life was real as I thought.

      Hello Hargun

For Q2, the capital letters and exclamation mark show the joy of a goal being scored and the love of the game being played.
For Q3, he is also dreaming of playing for England.
Q4 – yes, definitely in the countryside.
Q5 – yes, it means he knows the area well as its where he lives.

For your diary entry, read it back and think about how it sounds. You have some good ideas but it feels like you’ve over-complicated what you are trying to say.

Ben’s version of Will’s diary entry:

    Dear Diary

After breakfast this morning, I met up with my friends down the road at the football field. One of them had brought a ball, so we played team games together and had fun practising. At one point, the keeper slipped over and I managed to just about kick the ball into the goal, scoring a point for my team. When it started to darken, I headed home and went to bed.

    I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

      Hi George,
great start. Can you check through for punctuation, I think you might need some more capitals, and maybe another full stop, or a comma/ dash?

          Hello George

This is definitely a good start. Would Will say anything else? How could we show through his diary that he is football-mad and loves playing with his friends and team?

It is half time and me and my team discussed are primary role, we got in our positions and hoped every thing went well. Great description of Will’s thoughts in the diary. Should it be ‘are’ or ‘our’?

    Dear diary

It was early Sunday morning which only meant one thing, it was football day. The sun was shining brightly and the sky was as blue as the sea.
I got up and got ready and made my way to the field to play football. It was a great game as I scored the winning goal. In my head it was like scoring the winning goal for england, with the crowd going willd. This was the best day ever.

A lovely diary entry Mia. I really like the way you’ve described the setting- including a simile.
I think you might need a couple of commas. Can you work out where they need to go?

What about when we change the suffix to bly- what kind of word is it?

Who has just scored a goal? Will

Why is the word “GOAL!” in capital letters and have an exclamation mark afterwards?
To give it more explanation and make it sound exciting

What was going through his mind when he scored? He was dreaming of scoring for England

What is the setting for this scene? The local Village football pitch

In the last line, why does the writer use the word “familiar”? It was somewhere they had been before
