Year 2 Home Learning – Monday 8th February

Good morning Year 2!

It’s the start of another new week of home learning and we are so proud of how you have been doing so far.

We’ve seen some great work that has been emailed to us, and we’d love to see more.

Remember we have a zoom register at 10.20am every morning. It is important you log in to this on time so that we can say good morning to each other, complete an online activity as well as explaining our work for the day. A link for this has been sent to the parent email you have registered at school. Please email us at the Year 2 email address if you need a new link sending to you.
Please bring paper and a pencil/pen to the zoom register.

Our language of learning word of the week is confidence. we would like you to start thinking about what this word means to you. We will be doing some work about this on Friday.

Please remember to comment on the blog when you have completed your tasks, and to email us your completed work so we can see what you have been doing and support you if needed. Work can be emailed to yeartwo@lingsprimary.org.uk.

Here is today’s home learning tasks

English – Reading

Below is Miss Mann explaining today’s reading task. Today, our reading focus is all about The Ocean.

Here is today’s text.

The Ocean

 

Oceans cover most of the Earth’s surface. They are deeper in some parts than in others. This is because the ocean floor is not flat.

Ocean water is salty and full of life.

The oceans of the world are home to millions of amazing animals, from the largest on Earth to some of the tiniest, too small for use to see with the naked eye.

All these living things have to eat to stay alive. Some make their own food using the sun’s energy, some eat plants and many try to each other.

When an animal hunts another animal for food, it is called ‘prey’. A great white shark can bite off big chunks of its prey with its sharp teeth.

A box jellyfish is one of the most feared predators due to its long tentacles that have lots of stingers. Each stinger contains powerful venom that stuns its prey.

Pufferfish are slower swimmers, so they put off predators by blowing themselves up to look bigger than they are. If that fails, the poison in their bodies make them a very nasty mouthful to eat.

Here are today’s questions:

• Why are ocean’s deeper in some parts, but not others?
• Why do some animals have to eat other animals?
• What do you infer will happen if an animal gets stung by a box jellyfish ?
• Why must all living animals eat?
• Explain what ‘prey’ means in one sentence.
• Name 2 other animals that might live in the ocean.

English – Writing

Below is a video explaining today’s writing task.

For your writing task today you are going to design and describe your own sea creature.

Below are some examples of different sea creatures.

Use your imagination!

Start by creating your creature and then, in full sentences, describe it using different adjectives.

An example could be ‘My creature has sharp teeth like a shark and a solid shell like a sea turtle.’

Below is Miss Mann’s Phonics lesson for Monday. You can pause the video at anytime so that you have enough time to read, write and check your work.

Handwriting

Warm up: Wiggle your fingers up high, down low, to the side and in front of you.
Stretch your fingers out like fireworks twelve times.
Can you write the following KS1 words at least four times? Remember to leave a finger space.

Tick your neatest formation and be proud of your handwriting.

 

Science

Today we have a message from the Secret Scientist. He is stuck on an island in the middle of nowhere.

What does he need to survive?

Think about our previous learning in Science.

You can present your ideas in any way. A list? A spider diagram? Drawing and labelling them? It is up to you.

You need to explain what he needs to survive and why.

 

PSHE – Online Safety

Look at the follow question. Discuss it with a grown up at home. What should you do?

We have an online log in which will link to some ebooks that follow our reading scheme in school. These books will allow your child to practice their phonics skills. It is a free resource. You may need to register for a free parent account to access the books.
