Year 5- Monday 18th January

Good morning year 5.  It’s week 3!

Morning task

Maths (1 and a quarter hours)

We are going to spend this week consolidating our work on the written method of multiplication.

Pick whichever level you think you need!

Here is powerpoint recapping the method.

2 x 1 digit

                                                                                                                                                               Gaining confidence

                                                                                                                                                Something to think about

                                                                                                                                                                   Challenge yourself

                                                                                                                                                         Challenge

English (1 .5 hours)

We have a zoom at 11.00 to go through the text together.

Task 1-  read through the scene

(Enter HELENA)

HERMIA God speed fair Helena, whither away?

HELENA Call you me fair? That fair again unsay. Demetrius loves your fair: O happy fair!

HERMIA The more I hate, the more he follows me.

HELENA The more I love, the more he hateth me.

HERMIA Take comfort: he no more shall see my face ;Lysander and myself will fly this place.

LYSANDER Helen, to you our minds we will unfold: Through Athens’ gates have we devised to steal.

(Exit Hermia and LYSANDER)

HELENA How happy some o’er other some can be! Through Athens I am thought as fair as she. But what of that? Demetrius thinks not so: He will not know what all but he doth know. I will go tell him of fair Hermia’s flight: Then to the wood will he to-morrow night Pursue her; and for this intelligence If I have thanks, it is a dear expense.

(Exit)

Task 2-

In your own words can you explain what is going on. (summarise)

Task 3-

What genre of text is this (text type)?  How do you know?

How many characters are in the scene?   What is the writing in the brackets?   What is the writing in capitals?

History (1 and a half hours)

This week we are going to find out about Walter Tull and his involvement in WW1.   The writing task should be at least 1 side of a4 paper.

history

Here are the facts about him to use in the diamond task (order them from most important to least important)  You should have time to do some extra research before you begin writing.

Spellings (30 minutes)

This week we’re going to look at the tion ending.  Which can be spelt sion, tion or cian.

Tion is the most common.  It is used if the root word ends in t or te.

hesitate-  ends in te so we use tion.  hesitation.

Ssion- used if the root word ends in ss or mit.

permit-  ends in mit so we use tion-  permission

cian-  used if the root word ends in c or cs-  usually for a job

music-  ends in c so we use cian-  musician.

Here are some root words-  can you decide whether they will have the tion, ssion or cian suffix.

operate, electric, convulse, aggress, exhibit, compete,, politic, pollute, correct, mathematics. divert, confess. intent.

You could present as a table or list.

Number 1 means which is the odd one out. If you work out the calculations you will find that 3 are different methods of working out 1 calculation, but 1 is not.

For number 2 can you tell me how you partitioned the calculation?

Hermia doesn’t want Helena and says go away but Helena says the more I say I love him the more he hates me. Then the more I run the more he chases me. Hermia then said cheer up he will see me no more.
There are names in capitals so the person knows who is meant to say it.
The words in brackets are for the actors to see when they go on and off the stage.
There are 3 people I know that because there’s 3 different names.

          Great summary Max.

Yes it’s a playscript so we have stage directions and the capitalised character names tell us who is talking.

    1. 5 x 9 = 45 odd
    130 – 13 odd
    1 x 9 odd
    three odd

    2.31 x 7 = 217
    The mistake made is he did 21 x 7 instead of 31 x 7
A more efficient way is is using the column method

    1. 4 x 7 = 28

    2. 1 way is a long line another way is 40 by 2 and the last way is 16 b y 5

    English
Lysander loves Hermia but Hermia does not love him and Helena loves Lysander but Lysander does not love Helena and Lysander wants to explore the world Hermia but she does not but Helena wants to explore the world with Lysander.

The genre is love. The people in the scene are Hermia, Helena and Lysander. Writing in brackets is more information. Writing in capitals means you could be angry or excited.

hi Talal, can you check the first one. It means which is the odd one out. If you work out all of the calculations, one should be different to the others.

Great summary, but some commas would stop me running out of breath!

It is love, but genre is what type of writing is this- playscript.

Hi Saheera. It’s a spot the difference.
      A is adding 3 x 9 and 10 x 9, so that’s 13 x 9
      C is adding 12 x 9 and 1 x 9 so it’s also 13 x 9
      d is adding 5 x 13 and 5 x 13 so it’s 13 x 10
      and b is 10 – 13 minus 1 x 13 so it’s 9 x 13.
      Which one is odd?

    Maths
    1. 7830
    2. 8m 2
    3. 11
    4. 397

    Calculations
    32×3= 96
    15×5=75
    44×3=132

A because you don’t partition the numbers like B and C as it just does it straight away-the answer.

The mistake was the 5 in the tens as it should have been 9 because he didn’t add the 4 which he carried.

    Challenge-
B because it is the only one with a calculation of subtraction.

The mistake was by not adding another 70 as he done only two 70’s. The answer should have been= 217

    7x5x13=455

    Method 1= 10×5+6×5=80
    Method 2= 5×8+5×8= 80
    Method 3= 5×4+5×4+5×4+5×4=80

28,12,56 and 108 by going and been times by 2.
    4 was the biggest possibility.

The big box would have been 12.
I am working them out by seeing if they come in 11x times tables.

    English-
    Hermia says go away?
But Helena says that Demetrius loves you.
Hermia says she is not then Helena is surprised.
Helena says that she will try to be in love with Demetrius as a possibility.

It’s a script as that has the names of a script just like what they will say and/or their speech.
It’s got 3 characters. The writing is the part where the characters enter and leave the scene. The names of who says what.

    History
Walter Daniel John Tull (28 April 1888 – 25 March 1918) was an English professional Footballer and British Army officer of Afro-Caribbean descent. He played as an inside forward and half back for Clapton, Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town and was the third person of mixed heritage to play in the top division of the Football League after Arthur Wharton and Willie Clarke. He was also the first black player to be signed for Rangers F.C. in 1917 while stationed in Scotland.
During the First World War, Tull served in the Middlesex Regiment, including in the two Footballers’ Battalions. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 30 May 1917 and killed in action on 25 March 1918.

Due to his Bravery… box was the most important because Black people had harsh conditions in their life and it was so kind that the army let them.

Everything else is fine. But did you find that maths challenging enough?

Helena walked on the stage and found Hermia and Lysander. Hermia asked Helena, ”What are you doing here?” Helena explained why Demetrius doesn’t love her but she loves him. Hermia then said to Helena to not worry because her and Lysander have planned to run away so that Hermia does not die and that Helena can be with Demetrius.
Demetrius didn’t think that Helena was as pretty as Hermia. Helena then went to tell Demetrius about the plan so that Demetrius would fall in love with Helena.

I think the genre is a serious fairy tale with some romance because of the time Egeus speaks to the Duke about the love and death of Hermia and Lysander and Demetrius. It is also sometimes set in the woods with fairies.

Three characters and the brackets mean that they are doing something, you don’t read them. The names are in capitals because that is alerting you who is talking.

My mum has sent in my maths and spellings.

    Hermia hates demetrius.

    Helena Loves Demetrius.

    task 3

It is a script as It says who is speaking and that is only possible in a sript.

    There is 3 charaters.

The brackets tell who leaves and who enters.

Then he became a professional footballer and played for spurs or Tottenham
hotspur and then moved on to play for Northampton

Eventually he recruited himself to fight in ww1 he came so good that he

    Maths:
My mum emailed it all earlier today.

    English:
Task 1 – read the text

    Task 2:
During the conversation between Hermia and Lysander, appears Helena. She greets her friend Hermia and expresses her sadness of not being loved by Demetrius. Hermia tries to cheer her up and says that she’s planning to escape from her father with Lysander. Helena feels that the more she loves Demetrius, the more he hates her. Hermia tries to comfort her friend and Lysander joins the conversation and confirms the plan of running away with Hermia from the court. Then they leave the scene and Helena is on her own. Helena thinks to herself that some people can be in love and be happy. She then decides to tell everything to Demetrius with the hope he will take a liking of her for revealing the secret plan of Hermia and Lysander’s.

    Task 3.
The genre of the task is a playscript, as it looks like the text for actors to read, as you can tell whose role is next.
The are 3 characters in the scene.
The writing in brackets means what the characters are doing.
Writing in capital letters shows the names of the characters saying their role.
