year 5 English

Reading-  Why do you think the author has used short sentences in the first 2 paragraphs?

Give 3 ways in which they have made paragraph 3 different.

Do a little bit of research about Ellis island…  Now try to retell Jessie’s arrival there in your own words.  Think about how she would be feeling,  what she might be thinking.  Add description of the people and things she is seeing-  remember to think about fronted adverbials, range of punctuation and expanded noun phrases.

The author may have used short sentence because he would want to keep thing short and sweet instead of having such long sentences that need a lot of comas. Also the author may have used such short sentences because he is building it up slowly so it will be more interesting for the reader. It will not be boring because the author would have of given so much away that they would have ruined the exciting part for the reader too.

The short sentences reflect the experiences of the arrivals. Queue up. Show papers. Sit Down. Wait. Show papers, and so on. It is a way for the writer to show the reader what this was like though the sentence structures used, in this case short ones.

The dialogue (speech) is brief because this is how the conversation would have gone. The officials would not have been interested in the arrivals. They just needed to get certain information and would not really have cared about anything else. After all, the arrivals were just numbers to them.
