English/History

I am linking your English and History work today – all linked to ‘Titanic’.

Do you know, in History, what is meant by a primary source and a secondary source?

Primary source – evidence created during the time period you are studying. This could be diaries, letters, photographs, newspaper articles etc. These are used by historians for evidence. They can be created at a later date (no too late) so long as they were created by a participant at the time. Primary sources enable researchers to get as close as possible to what actually happened.

Secondary source – these are created by someone who did not witness first-hand a particular event. A good secondary source will use a primary source as evidence. The pictures that I posted yesterday were secondary sources.

As a young historian, do you think that primary or secondary sources give the most accurate information?

We are going to be looking at this task over the next two days. Here is a booklet for you to look at (we aren’t doing it all today – we’ll finish tomorrow):

On the second page of the booklet are some challenges – you won’t be doing them all today!

Challenge 1 – use the sources (the two links below) to answer the questions on page 3 of this booklet.

Challenge 2 – At the back of your booklet (above) are pictures of five members of the crew involved in the disaster. There is a little spider diagram for each of them. Your job is to read the statements to decide who you think was responsible for the sinking – the statements are on the last pages of the ‘Sources’ document below. Make a few notes about each person that you think will help you to decide who was responsible.

You’ll be writing about this tomorrow so keep all of your notes as you read today.

The following will help you. the powerpoint has some great pictures from inside the ship. Make sure that you read the notes at the bottom of the slides as they provide some really interesting facts.

    I got 3/3
    Task 1
    I would agree with mo it should be 8,3 because you go 8 along and 3 down
    Task 2
    In my apinyan amir is right actually because if he is trying to fit in to the triangle he can’t fit his letter in to plays
    Task 3
    7,4 or 4,7

      Challenge 2 – Amir is incorrect – it will fit on the grid. If point B moved to point D, the other two point move in the same way so they will all fit on the grid.

    I’ve learnt that a coordinate is a specific point on a grid and a translate to move a point on a grid.

    Good morning Mrs Millard,
    Spellings :-
    poisonous ,dangerous, mountainous, outrageous, envious, both spellings are wrong it’s famous, luxurious.

    Adventurous, Various, Nervous, Envious, Famous, Dangerous, Furious, Luxurious.

    Maths :-
    I agree with Mo, because on the grid he went along the corridor and up the stairs and Alex did not .

    Could i please have some help with part 2 and part 3.

    Tried to do the english /history but would not upload.

    Hope you have a lovely day, went for a walk with Nanny and Pappy at Sywell this morning .

      Hi Lydia,

      Great spellings!

      Great effort on the Maths. Challenge 2 – if B moves to where D is, how has it moved. If all the other points move in the same way, will it fit on the grid?

      Challenge 3 – look how A has moved to B, then move the other two vertices in the same way. Where will they end up?

      I’ll e mail the attachments for the English/History as you’ll need them for tomorrow anyway.

    I did 2 and 3 on my maths for 2 it does fit on the grid you count the points B to C which Is 4 and you put it next to and then count A to B then place it then do the same for A To C

    3 you can do the same as 2
