Monday 1st June – Year 5

Good morning Year 5 – I hope you have had a wonderful half term week. This should obviously be the start of our final Summer term but this may well be via the blogs for a while yet.

I thought that this term we would have a theme of the week and this week it will be ‘Under the Sea’. Where possible, tasks will be linked to this but there are times when this will be tricky as there are still lots that we have to fit in. Let me know if you have any great ideas for possible themes that we can look at over the coming weeks.

Remember that you can ask us any questions via the blog or via our e mail address which is: yearfive@lingsprimary.org.uk.

Before we start, have a look at the following and discuss it with your family (you don’t have to blog this but you can if you would like!)

Here are your tasks for today:

Spellings

As we haven’t focussed specifically on spelling for a few weeks, I’d like you to revise the Year 3/4 spelling words. I don’t think that you have your Homework Books at home at the moment so you won’t have these words which we put at the front.

The words are below. If you can, print them out so that you have a copy but don’t worry if you can’t print them. I want you to test yourselves on these words throughout this week. Ideally, ask an adult or older sibling to read the words to you so that you can test yourself. Today, I’d like you to focus on the words in the first column – there are 29 words. Ask your ‘teacher’ to read them, write them down and them mark yourself. Blog me with your scores out of 29.

Reading

Read the following piece:

Now answer the questions below – please number your answers as you blog.

Maths

We looked at fractions in quite a bit of detail before lockdown and we have been looking at decimals all year. This week, we are going to focus on percentages – fractions, decimals and percentages are all closely linked.

What does ‘percent’ actually mean? Do you know?

Have a look at the following video which should help to explain:

Do you have any questions or queries after watching this?

The following powerpoint should also be useful.

Connecting_FDPs

Have a go at the following questions:

Foundation

Watch the following ‘BBC Teach Blue Planet Live Lesson’:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/live-lessons/blue-planet-live-lesson/zn7tkmn

While you are watching, make notes on all the interesting facts that you find out. After watching it, I’d like you to create a fact file of the best facts that you learnt. This should include text but can also include pictures or diagrams.

It might look something like this (but please use whatever format you prefer)

Have fun!

    Good Morning Mrs Millard,
I got 25 out of 29 on the spellings.
    Discussion
I would tell my Mum about the message and ask her to talk to their parents. I would tell my friend to not reply and maybe if they were from school, tell their teacher. It was an outside club I would tell them to tell their leader.

      Hi Lydia,

I hope you had a lovely week last week – it seems ages since we have ‘spoken.
Very well done on the spellings – maybe just keep practising the 4 that were incorrect and then you will have perfection!

Good ICT advice – I wouldn’t want to speak to them either!

      Hi Logan,

It’s great to hear from you – I hope you had a lovely week last week. The weather has been beautiful!

Great Maths work – all correct!
Fabulous reading answers – just look at question 5 – it should be a 1-2 word answer. Did you answer all of the questions – there were 8? I was unsure which question your last answer was for – was it 7?

      Keep up the good work.

          Hi Logan,

If you need any help with any of the tasks on the blog then let me know and I can help (as much as I can without being with you!). If you don’t want to do this on the blog then remember that you can also e mail me on

I hope you had a great week last week – it feels ages since our last contact!

Well done on your spellings – there are 29 as the first two words have another word in brackets (accidentally, actually) and further down the list is busy and business.

Maybe keep practising the ones that you got wrong – practise makes perfect!

      Hi Gracie,

It’s great to hear from you on the blogs – I hope you are enjoying the weather!

Well done for having a go a this but I think you are a little confused.
Let’s have a look at A first. Remember the percent (%) means for every hundred. So 1% means 1 out of 100 (1/100 as a fraction) so 1% of 100 is 1. It’s like getting 1 question right out of a test of 100 questions.
7% of 100 would be 7 and 15% of 100 would be 15. Is this beginning to make sense?
