Northamptonshire Sport Virtual School Games- Week 7 Orienteering

This weeks Virtual School Games challenges will have a slightly different theme as this week is National Women’s Sports week. The sport of choice for this week is Orienteering so Mr Davies and Mrs Davies have created three courses around the school grounds each with a different challenge attached to them.

Here is Mr Davies to briefly explain this weeks challenge.

Challenge 1- Scavenger Hunt (Orange Course)

For this challenge teams will use our orange orienteering course maps to find the orange tags hidden around the school grounds. On the tags will be a number, picture and a name of a sport. The team will need to put all of this information onto their scoresheet for each card. The points for this activity are as follows:

  • 1 point: for the correct number
  • 1 points: for the correct sport
  • 1 bonus point: for matching the women athletes to their sport

Challenge 2- Code Breaker (Green Course)

For this challenge teams will use our green orienteering course maps to find the green tags hidden around the school grounds. On the tags will be a two letters each with a number below. This information will then need to be put on their scoresheet so that each letter in the alphabet has a number attached to it. The team will then need to use this information to create words and sentences on their scoresheet. The words and sentences will directly relate to National Women’s Sports Week. The points for this activity are as follows:

  • 1 point: for each correct word built
  • 5 bonus points: for completing each word correctly in the time limit

Challenge 3- Word Builder (Pink Course)

For this challenge teams will use our pink orienteering course maps to find the pink tags hidden around the school grounds. On the tag their will be one multiple choice question to answer about an athlete. Each answer has a letter attached and the team will need to get the answer correct to get the right letter needed for the final task. Each team will be given 13 athlete profiles with information they will need to answer the questions on the tags. When the team has answered all of the questions they will have 13 letters which they need to use to build a two word answer to the final question. The points for this activity are as follows:

  • 1 point: for each correct letter
  • 1 points: for each word built correctly
  • 5 bonus points: for completing all of the letters in the time limit

To complete these challenges you will need to use your cognitive skills as you work out how to read the map and find the clues hidden in many different places. You will also need to use your social skills as you will be split into teams within your years groups. You will have to assign roles in your team, share the responsibilities and work together to complete all of the challenges before time runs out. Are you up for the challenge?
