Tuesday 28th April 2020 – Year 2 Home Learning Tasks

Good morning Year 2! Hope you are all well?

I thought today’s inspirational quote seemed just right for at the minute. Make people happy.

Here are your tasks for today.

English

Yesterday you learnt about Captain Tom and his amazing achievements. Today’s reading and writing task is all about some of the people he was raising money for, and the amazing work that they do to help us. Take a read of this piece of writing and answer the questions below.

Would you like to be a nurse and why? Can you write a few sentences to explain your answer. Think about using your phonics to help with your spellings, punctuation and keeping your handwriting neat.

Maths

This week we are having a focus on 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. Can you draw and name the 2D shapes. In full sentences can you then write about the properties of the shapes? Remember we use the word vertices instead of corners in Year 2.

Common Exception Word Spellings.

These words are very important to help us make our writing sparkle. Instead of handwriting this week we are going to practice reading and spelling these as it is important we practice these.

Can you read these 12 words to whoever is helping with your learning.
Can you copy these words twice, having a good look at the spellings as you write them.
Can you now have a go at spelling the words. Get your helper to read the word to you so that you can spell it and see how many you can get right.

most                  only               every

both                  old                 great

cold                  gold               break

hold                  told               steak

Phonics.

It is important that we practice spelling phonetic sounds in all of the different ways they can be written. It helps us to read and write words that they are in several times so you should follow all the steps to help you practice.
We are going to focus on the sound ‘ee’. This is pronounced as ‘ee’ as in sheep.
There are 8 different spellings of this sound. This sound can be spelt as
ee as in sheep
y as in happy
e-e, (the spelling is split in the word) as in these
ey as in key
ea as in dream
e as in me
ie as in chief
i as in ski

Can you read these words with the sound ‘ee’
sleep, baby, stream, Pete, movie, alley, skiing, me

Can you write the words below thinking about which spelling of the sound they have. Ask an adult to read the word for you to so you can try to spell it. Remember there is one word for each spelling of the sound so you can’t use the same spelling more than once.
alien, weep, valley, reach, be, nappy, these, skier

Can you sort these words into the correct boxes? Look carefully at the spellings of the sound in each word. You might want to draw the table to help you.

Story Time.

If you would like you could complete a challenge from Bella’s new reading challenges.

If you don’t set yourself a challenge to read your favourite story to somebody else. This could be a brother or sister, a parent or even your own pet. Can you add different voices for your characters as you read the story to make it really exciting for your listener? Maybe you could record yourself reading and email it to us?

Have a great day and don’t forget to comment on the blog with your work, or email it to us at yeartwo@lingsprimaryschool.org.uk. Remember we are giving out certificates to children who are sharing their work with us! We look forward to seeing what you have been doing.
