Year 5- Monday 1st March

Good morning year 5!

Morning task

English – 90 minutes (Zoom at 11 o’clock)

Here is a reminder about what we know about Will so far.

We know that Will and his friends are considering joining the army. They seem to think that it will be an adventure and have heard that it might be over by Christmas. They see recruitment posters that tell people that it is their duty to sign up.

Here is the next part of the story:

Some vocabulary for you:

pulpit – a raised platform in a church from which the speaker talks.

squire – a man of high social standing who owns land in a rural area.

pew – a long bench placed in rows in a church.

tailor-made – clothes made for a particular customer.

Reading task – Answer these questions about the text:

  1. What day of the week is it?
  2. Inside which building are the boys?
  3. “The local squire wore all the medals he could get his hands on, and his son wore a brand-new, tailor-made officers uniform.” What effect might this have on Will and his friends?
  4. What did the boys do after the service?
  5. “Here they sat almost every day of their lives…” What does this tell you about the boys’ friendship?
  6. Why does Freddie want to join the army?
  7. What do we find out about Will’s thoughts on joining the army?
  8. What do the boys agree to do the next day?

Grammar task – Name the word class. Here are 6 words from the text. 2 of them are nouns, 2 are adjectives and 2 are verbs. Can you work out which word belongs to which word class?

  1. service
  2. sat
  3. football
  4. adventure
  5. local
  6. join

Now make 2 lists. One list will contain the reasons why Will should join the army. The other list will contain the reasons why he shouldn’t join. You should think about all parts of the story that we have read and discussed.

Writing task – Write a letter to Will which persuades him to either join the army or not join the army. Make you reasons clear and be as persuasive as possible.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/how-to-write-a-persuasive-text/zkcfbdm – This website contains a video with tips about writing a persuasive text.

You should be able to write at least 100 words.

Maths- 75 minutes

Last week we looked at perimeter- a 1d measurement of length around the outside of a shape.

This week we are looking at area- a 2d measurement of the surface or side of a shape.

Challenge 2

Geography-  60 minutes

Here is lesson 2 of our work on natural resources

geography

Spelling (15 minutes)

Let’s continue with our work on ble and bly.

Remember ble is for adjectives and bly is for adverbs.

Find a definition for each of these words, put them into a sentence,  practise spelling them.

“The local squire wore all the medals he could get his hands on, and his son wore a brand-new, tailor-made officers uniform.” What effect might this have on Will and his friends? Exciting, expensive and shows you get rewarded with medals
What did the boys do after the service? They sat under a sign post and talked about the war
“Here they sat almost every day of their lives…” What does this tell you about the boys’ friendship? I think they’ve been friends for a very long time
Why does Freddie want to join the army? Because none of them have been outside of the country
What do we find out about Will’s thoughts on joining the army? Hes starting to feel scared about joining because people die in the army
What do the boys agree to do the next day? They agreed to go to the town hall after work

Well done Franek. Squares are more effience space wise, as they tesselate (fit together neatly) so no space is wasted.

For challenge 2. If we assume they have the same sized desk, you should be able to work out who has used larger squares to measure with.

    Should Will Join the army-

    Yes:
Because he can enjoy out in the war
Because he can learn how to shoot guns!
Because he can do that as an adventure.
Because he can learn the life out of war.

    No:
Because he might die in the war.
Because he might not see his friends if they don’t survive
Because he might do an easy mistake to get him in danger.
Because he has a whole life ahead!

Will shouldn’t join the army because joining the army has the highest rate to kill someone during war. As you see, wars are very dangerous and can cause lot of damage to you. Even fighting for victory isn’t worth Will’s dream. He always wanted to play for England as a footballer and now changed his mind into a serious dangerous dream. If he fights, it isn’t still worth it. He believed always that football is his dream and now taking one of the deadliest risks! What will he do if one of them won’t survive, what was it for? It’s for his friends as a useless choice! So that’s why Will shouldn’t join the army.

    Dear Will,

I am writing to you to explain why you should NOT join the army. You will leave behind your family and friends, you have to work extremely hard, you have to keep fit and you might not survive for long in the army. I hear you would like to play football for England, that would be much safer to do. Life would be very different to what you have now because living in trenches is a lot worse than living in your village. Being in a war is extremely DANGEROUS! You should NOT join the war! Stay where you are!

Your choice… Will you choose the risk, or live more calm. Would you see your friends again? Will you company them or stay with Billy. If you go to the war you might lose it. Your life. Not from shot or shell. But mabye a disease. Your mother’ll miss you. There are many reasons to stay, but as much to go.

A WAR IS RAGING AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
This war has gone to far we will need your help. Germans are advancing, lives are lost and potencial danger to lose England.

It will end at Christmas and after you can retire all we ask is that you help stop this war. Personally I think that your help can change the world. We even have other countries on our sides but it is not helping.

This war is most likely the last. We need another 100,000 men to push the Germans back.

Hi Owen. Great work. Can you have another look at number 7. You’re correct that both their shapes have the same number of squares. But as Evas are larger this means her shape has a larger area. So it’s actually false.

Grammer should will join the army or not

He shouldn’t join because he could die or be injured, and that could afect him playing football. He would loose all his friends because they might die if they come with him. He will not be able to play football for a long time or never again.

He should join because he would earn lots of medals, and help out in the army. All the poster from the other day gave have him more courage and confidence.

Excellent work Mia. Can you just check number 7 for me? Each triangle is half of a square, so this might change your measurements…
