Morning Year 6.
I hope you are all well today.
We are looking forward to seeing you all on Zoom at 9:05am.
Warm up activity (15 minutes)
Recently, I bought Verdi and Azul a ‘play’ tank – a tank that they can play in whilst I am cleaning out their main tank. I put them in it; was busy cleaning away and turned around to find Azul doing this:
Write a prediction of what might have happened next.
Reading (20 minutes)
Today, we are going to have an introduction to Oberon and Titania, who are the King and Queen of the fairies. We will look at where things start to go a bit wrong for everyone.
Read text 1:
Answer these questions:
- What suggests that the play was set in the past?
- Who did Helena tell about Hermia’s plan?
- Why do you think Helena told them?
- Find and copy a word that suggests that Hermia and Lysander don’t know that Demetrius is following them.
Read text 2:
Now answer these questions:
- How did Oberon and Titania feel at the beginning of the text? Why?
- Why did Oberon want revenge?
- Who is Puck?
- What was Oberon’s plan?
- What impression do you get of Oberon? Why?
- What impression do you get of Titania? Why?
Writing (40 minutes)
The following text is a conversation between Puck and another fairy. It is a good text to get to understand who Puck is a little better.
Read the text first:
FAIRY
Either I mistake your shape and making quite,
Or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite
Call’d Robin Goodfellow: are not you he
That frights the maidens of the villagery;
Skim milk, and sometimes labour in the quern
And bootless make the breathless housewife churn;
And sometime make the drink to bear no barm;
Mislead night-wanderers, laughing at their harm?
Those that Hobgoblin call you and sweet Puck,
You do their work, and they shall have good luck:
Are not you he?
PUCK
Thou speak’st aright;
I am that merry wanderer of the night.
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
When I a fat and bean-fed horse beguile,
Neighing in likeness of a filly foal:
And sometime lurk I in a gossip’s bowl,
In very likeness of a roasted crab,
And when she drinks, against her lips I bob
And on her wither’d dewlap pour the ale.
The wisest aunt, telling the saddest tale,
Sometime for three-foot stool mistaketh me;
Then slip I from her bum, down topples she,
And ‘tailor’ cries, and falls into a cough;
And then the whole quire hold their hips and laugh,
And waxen in their mirth and neeze and swear
A merrier hour was never wasted there.
There is a lot of text here so here is some vocabulary to help you out:
Shrewd – showing sharp powers of judgement.
Knavish – dishonest
Jest – something done for amusement e.g. a joke
Beguile – trick someone in to doing something
Now read the text again:
FAIRY

Or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite
Call’d Robin Goodfellow: are not you he

To summarise, in this text the fairy is asking Puck:
Are you that dishonest fairy who scares maids and tricks people in the night and laughs at them.
Puck replies:
I am that person but I do it to make Oberon laugh and for fun.
Task:
Re-write the text in modern language to make the meaning easier to understand.
You might need to research some of the other words to help you.
If you get stuck, e-mail us and we will help you understand each part of the speech.
Maths (1 hour)
Starter challenge
Here are today’s Rapid Reasoning questions to try:
Main activity
Today we are going to be looking at how to read line graphs
Line graphs look like this:
The first thing that you might notice is that they are set out in a similar way to a bar chart.
They have:
- A y-axis and an x – axis
- Data
The reason that we would choose a line graph over a bar chart is that a line graph allows us to show data when both of the bits of information are number based e.g. the temperature at different times of the day like the one above.
Go to the link below and watch the videos which will explain how a line graph works and teach you how to read one. Then complete the activities that are underneath the video clips.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zqv8bqt
Science (1 hour)
Today’s question is:
What is a key and how can they help us to identify living things?
We are not talking about keys that we use to unlock things – do you know which keys we are talking about?
What do you know about classification keys?
Have a look at the following 3 objects:
FUNGUS BACTERIA PLANT
Which one do you think is the odd one out and why? (There is no right or wrong answer here as long as you can give me a reason).
Now have a look at these 3 objects:
DANDELION APPLE TREE FERN
Again, which one would you say is the odd one out and why?
Vocabulary:
Classification key – a diagram used to help with classification i.e.
Watch the clip at the link below to learn more about what a classification key is:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zxjj6sg/articles/z9cbcwx
We use classification keys to help us identify which living thing we are looking at. Let’s look at an example:
If I had found this animal: but didn’t know what it was called, I could use a classification key to help me find out.
Does my animal have legs? No
Does my animal have a shell? No
Therefore it must be called a worm.
Task 1:
Here is a selection of different penguins:
Can you use the classification key below to work out the name of each type of penguin?
(If you can’t see this very clearly, let us know and we will e-mail it to you).
Task 2:
Write an explanation of how classification keys are used. Add a example of a classification key that you have made yourself to help make your explanation clear.
Task 3:
Now read the following text:
Using Classification and Keys to Save Lives
Scientific Keys are often complex and long. For example, a key of all the mosses found in the UK takes the form of a single thick text book! This is obviously of interest to a person who has a particular fascination in this subject but, more importantly, it can provide speedy access to a specific, vital – and possibly even life-saving – piece of information.
In the UK, there are a surprisingly large number of organisms that are poisonous and venomous, sometimes even to a lethal extent. This includes a range of fungi, flowering plants and invertebrate animals. For doctors to be able to prescribe the correct antidote to a patient who has eaten something poisonous or been stung by something which is causing an adverse reaction, they will firstly need to know exactly what organism is responsible. For this, they would need to refer to a scientific key (on poisonous plants, mushrooms etc). This means that the poison or chemical causing the reaction in the patient’s body can then be matched in the laboratory to an appropriate drug.
In other parts of the world – notably South America and Australia – this is even more important because the number of potentially life-threatening organisms to which humans can be exposed is so vast.
Finally, answer the following question:
How can classification keys save lives?
Spanish (30 minutes)
Hola clase
Hoy, vamos a juntar las últimas dos semanas de aprendizaje.
Today, we are going to put the last two weeks of learning together.
We are going to use our knowledge of days of the week and months of the year (along with our knowledge of numbers) to learn how to write the date.

Well done Aamirat – that definitely sounds like Puck!
Classification keys are used to help people know what certain or something is ect. Here’s and example say if I didn’t know what a cat is I would use a classification key to help so I would say 4/5 animals and say a question and then lead it to yes or no and keep doing it until you get the right answer 👍
Great Evie, well done. Have a go at the other two tasks.
The penguin 40/50 cm is called rock hopper
This penguin 55/70cm it called macaroni penguins
This penguin is 78cm it called yello eyed penguin
This penguin is 110/130 it called emperor penguin
This last penguin is 50/70 it called Adeline penguin
A great use of classification keys Hassan!

Fantastic answers! Well done Declan!
Classification keys can help lives because scientists can find out what has happened like say with cancer they can use classification keys to group the different types and stages of cancer
A fantastic answer – well done Aamirat!
Science I think plant and dandelion
Why?
Science
Plants is the odd one out as bacteria and fungus are like dirt
And a plants are good as an example flowers are a plant and there nectar Mack’s honey
A great reason Gracie!
they were having an argument 2)titana flew in a terrible temper 3)hes oberons servant 4)planned to rub a flower on her eyelids while she sleeps 5)hes impatient and selfish 6)she has a bit of a temper at arguments.
Well done Declan. Why do you think that Oberon is selfish and impatient?
Science
The odd one out is the fern
As a apple tree is a type of plant
And dandy lion is a plant
And fern is not
Great reasons!
1)35.100 2)22.100 3)o.34 4) 0.35 5)80.100
Well done Declan!
Spanish
This is my birthday in Spanish Doce de marzo
12 March. Well done Jaynelle.
The doctor needs to prescribe an antidote to keep them alive.
Great Evie, They need the classification key to establish what the poison has come from and keep the patient alive.
So they need the classification key to keep them alive
Reading:
1.So it can make the story conected and make more scence.
2.Demetrius.
3.Well I think she told him is because she loved him and hated Hermia because she didn’t want Demetrius to marry her.

Great Declan, well done!
How to use a classification key
so basically you have to get tow animals say if you have a centipede and a worm and you don’t know which is which use will use the classification key to find out . so you will ask a question like does it have legs? and if it doesn’t it will be a worm
A good description of how a classification key works.
How can they save lives?
They can save lives because if there is some thing poisons that looks like some thin that is not you can use a classification key to find out.
A great answer Sadia.
