Year 2 Home Learning – Tuesday 12th January

Good Morning Year 2

We know it’s a little bit different learning from home, but we are here if you need any help. We know you can do this!

Remember we have a zoom register at 10.20am every morning. It is important you log in to this promptly so that we can say good morning to each other, give you instructions for today’s learning, complete our Phonics lesson as well as working through our Reading and Writing activities together.

A link for this has been sent to the parent email you have registered at school. Please email us at the Year 2 email address if you need a new link sending to you.

Please bring paper and a pencil/pen to the zoom register.

Please remember to comment on the blog when you have completed your tasks, and to email us your completed work so we can see what you have been doing and support you if needed. Work can be emailed via your pupil email address (details were issued last term) or via a parents email address to yeartwo@lingsprimary.org.uk.

Have a great day and we will be waiting for you when we can all go back to school together!

Miss Duncan, Miss Battams and the rest of the Year 2 team.

Here is your home learning for today.

English – Reading

Read the text about a new mystery place. You should then write two sentences using the evidence in the text to help you.

  1. Where do you think the place is and why do you think that? What evidence is there in the text to support your answers?

2. Who do you infer lives in the place and why do you think this?

The air is filled with a mystery, sweet smell that floats on the breeze. In between the gaps in the trees, you can see towering toadstools that look like giant umbrellas for small creatures. If you listen carefully, you might hear the sound of tiny tiptoes on the hard, stone path. The branches on the twisty, mystical trees reach up like giants fingers into the bright blue sky. You put your hand on the rusty, metal railings that you can see on top of a stone wall and you wonder why the wall is here. You move further into the trees, your feet sinking into the softness of the grass below. Your ears hear the sound of a creature singing beautifully, but you have never heard a sound like this before. Bending down, you sniff a brightly coloured, flower that you have never seen before. You feel like something special could be about to happen, but you are not sure what it will be.

Below is a video explaining the task and reading the text for you.

English – Writing

Think about what the place in the text you just read would be like if you were there. Can you write a sentence for each of the senses to tell us what the place is like? Use the slide on the English resources to remind you what sense you should use in your writing.

For example: In the place, I can hear the wind whistling quietly in the tall trees.

You should try to start each sentence in a different way to keep your writing interesting. There are some sentence openers to help you, or you can create your own. You should also use adjectives to describe the place in more detail and to make it exciting for the reader.

You should use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in each of your sentences.

You should try to present your work neatly like you would in class. Think about our handwriting practice and how we use Kinetic letters to make our work look great.

Use your knowledge of phonics to help with your spellings.

Read your sentences back when you have finished to check they make sense.

Reading/Story

We have an online log in which will link to some ebooks that follow our reading scheme in school. These books will allow your child to practice their phonics skills. It is a free resource.

Follow this link to log in: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/?selLanguage=en&mode=hub

Go to Oxford Owl for Home and click on enter site.
This will give you the option to choose a book recommended for your age or you can choose a book from the colour you read at school.
These are all free to read and it would be great if you could read one to someone at home.

Remember to leave us a comment on the blog to share your learning or you can email it to me at yeartwo@lingsprimary.org.uk.

We look forward to seeing your work!

I’m so happy to hear Natasha loved Phonics.
Phonics over Zoom is a little strange but everyone will be great at it in the end.

Everyone is missing Natasha and can’t wait for her and all of Year 2 to be back.

      Take care

      Miss Duncan
