Maths – Friday 8th January

Today’s lesson looks at multiplying 4-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Watch the teaching slides – don’t forget to pause them and rewind whenever you need to. Then, complete the worksheet questions when prompted.

There are also some further questions for you to work on, if you finish everything else.

This should take 1 hour.

What is the word beginning with “e” that refers to numbers “moving to the left” (e.g. 10 ones becomes 1 ten)?

Check your answer to challenge 2.

For question 8, check your working out for 2,480 – 248. Then decide which method you found easier.

Keep investigating question 9 . There is an even closer product to 8,000!

      Well done

      Check question 2.

For question 4, Nijah has made a very big mistake. Look carefully at the question (2,430 x 3) and the answer (729). Do they look correct? Try to work out the mistake.

      Check 5b.

      Great answer for question 6!

      Don’t forget question 9 and challenge 2.

      Hello Saheera.

For question one, the answer is correct but think about have many ones, tens, hundreds and thousands there are all together. Each digit has been multiplied by 3.

Try to explain Nijah’s mistake in question 4. What is wrong with their working out?

Check 5c – the others in question 5 are fine.

      Well done Talal.

Overall, you show a good understanding of this step.

      For question 5, check a and c.

For question 6, think about what we know about multiplying by zero. Why would Ron not have to use the column method?

Don’t forget to have a go at the challenges too.

Well done, you have shown that you are able to do this step.

Check question 5c – you have just made a small error in your working out.

For question 6, think about what we know about multiplying any number by zero.

      Good work!

      Hello Alex

Overall you have done well and show a good understanding of this step.

Have another look at question 3 – I think you may have miscounted the ones.

Look again to at question 7 b and c.

For question 8, try to explain how 248 x 10 can be used to work out 248 x 9.

      Question 9 – check 4,135 x 2 again.

      Hello Mia

      Good work overall.

For question 6, think about why we don’t have to do the column method to work out 7,423 x 0. What do we already know about multiplying by zero?

Check question 7b and then try 7c.

For question 8, try to think about how 248 x 10 can be used to work out 248 x 9.

Well done – you have a good understanding of this step.
