Maths and Literacy (Year 1) – Week Commencing: 13/07/20

Literacy:

Monday Look at the front cover. What do you think the story is going to be about?

Where do you think the story is set? What makes you think that? What is the scenery like? What sort of clothes is she wearing? Where does she live? What is the weather like?

Tuesday Listen to the whole story of Handa’s Surprise here:

Now complete a “story mountain” that features the beginning, middle and end of the story – and includes Handa’s surprise/problem and resolution!

Wednesday Today you are going to pretend that you went on a picnic and there was a problem.

What happened? How did you solve it? What happened in the end?

Start to plan your own story in a story mountain – one section at a time.

Thursday Write your own story using your own story mountain plan!
Friday Today you are going to read your story to someone – that could be a brother, sister, Mummy, Daddy … or whoever is with you at home! You could even take a trip to the local shop and buy some of the seven fruits that Handa has in her basket to begin with … I bet that some of you have never tried some of Handa’s fruits. In her basket, she has; a banana, a guava, an orange, a mango, a pineapple, an avocado and a passion fruit.

Maths:

Monday I can count forwards and backward along a number line in 1’s.

I can confidently use a number line to solve a problem.

Draw your own number line to 20.

Working practically, count forwards and backwards along your number line.

Solve problems e.g. start on 5 … count on 15 … what number do you land on?

Tuesday I can count forwards and backward along a number line in 1’s.

I can confidently use a number line to solve a problem with numbers to 100.

Draw a number line from 1 to 100.

Use your number line to solve addition problems up to 100, e.g. 56 + 4 = ?

Wednesday I can talk about and investigate number lines that count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Make your own number line that counts in jumps of 2’s 5’s and 10’s.

Challenge: How far can you go?

Thursday I can solve missing number problems on a number line.

Fill in the missing numbers on these number lines:

Friday I can solve one step problems that involve addition and subtraction using a number line.

I can record my thinking.

Work with 2 digit numbers to 100 and pose addition questions that do not bridge through 10, e.g. 54+3=?

How can you solve the questions? Could you use anything to support your thinking? (number lines!)

Challenge: Bridge through 10s.
