Tuesday 30th June – Year 5

Good morning Year 5 – I hope you are all well.

Apologies – yesterday something went wrong with the blog and your R.E. task didn’t post. I’ve added it onto today’s blog instead.

SPaG

We are going to revise how to use paragraphs effectively. Since we haven’t been in school, some of you are forgetting to use them as you write.

I’d like you to complete the following tasks:

Paragraphs- Tues

English

Chinese New Year is not celebrated at the same time that we celebrate New Year. Look at the following information about Chinese New Year:

T-T-8919-Chinese-New-Year-Information-Powerpoint_ver_3

You may know that the Chinese New Years are represented by an animal – 2020 is the Year of the Rat!

The twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

The following ancient story explains why the 12 animals were chosen:

t-t-4794-chinese-new-year-story-powerpoint_ver_6

The Dragon is very special – look at the following clip:

Dragon Dance

I’d like you to create your own version of the Chinese New Year story involving 12 different animals. As the dragon is so special, I’ll let you use that one!

Your story can take place anywhere – it doesn’t have to follow the riverbank theme of the original story. Be as creative as you like! Think about how your animals will meet – what happens?

You can use animals, fish, birds, reptiles, imaginary creatures, dinosaurs, mythical creatures – use whatever creatures excite you the most. Even unicorns are allowed!

Let your imaginations run wild! I can’t wait to read your wonderful stories.

Maths

A good start yesterday with our work on ‘Time’. The lesson today build on what you started yesterday and begins to solve problems involving time. Here you go:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-solve-problems-involving-converting-between-hours-and-minutes

I’d also like you to try at least some of the following challenges (remember to number your answers):

Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Challenge 3

Challenge 4

Challenge 5

R.E.

One of the important celebrations in the Hindu religion is Diwali (also spelt Divali). What is Diwali? The following link should help:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zh86n39/articles/zjpp92p

You will have read in the link above about the story of Rama and Sita which is a key story at the time of Diwali. I have also attached below a version in Word and a Powerpoint version of the story.

Rama and Sita story

Rama_and_Sita ppt

I’d like you to create a storyboard of the Rama and Sita story. It should contain text about each stage of the story and ideally, pictures to accompany the text. This can be created in pencils (black and white or coloured), you could paint it – which ever media you prefer.

Some Extra Relaxation/Fun

I don’t know about you but I love a bit of colouring. If you would like, try some of the following colouring sheets based on Chinese New Year:

Chinese New Year – Mindfulness colouring sheets

Happy learning today.

Take care and keep safe.

Once the Emperor of china had given some animals a chance for a year to be named after them. So he gathered lots of animals and he told them to get a year named after you you must compete a challenge the first 12 to the end of the river will get a year named after them. The contestants were a unicorn,a dragon,a bear , a buffalo, a guinea pig ,a sheep,a cow ,a dog,a frog, a snake,a wolf, a fox and a cheetah. So they all went off and the first one one there was the cheetah he was very proud. The next one was a wolf he was not happy because he was not first . The next one was a fox he did not like water so he was happy but annoyed. The bear was next he was trying to help others then the guinea pig , the dog and the cow all came together .The sheep came then it was the dragon then the frog then the sake then the unicorn those were all of the animals that got a year named after them

      Hi Sadia,

I loved your version of the story and the animals that you included.

Don’t forget that China is a country and should begin with a capital letter. Do you think that any other punctuation is needed in your final sentence?

      Hi Jessica,

Don’t worry yourself about this – life still goes on and we still have to do these things! I know that you blog when you can. I hope they had some luck in finding a house.

I loved your story – I like the fact that you linked it to dogs and cats not liking each other today.
Don’t forget to always begin sentences with a capital letter though!

    English:
There was race between a cat, dog, rat, t-rex, Ghidorah (three headed dragon), Mothra, Chinese Dragon, Zilla (mutaded iguana), King Shark (mutaded shark), tiger, worm and Kong (giant gorilla). They will be the animals (and mutaded animals) to race. The rat and cat asked Kong to ride his shoulder to the end of the river, Kong replied with “Yes”. So the cat and rat rode on top of Kong but the cat slapped the rat across the face taking him back to the start. The cat gave the rat cute eyes and waved bye bye then Kong and the cat made it together at the finish line, the Emperor said “The cat is 1st and Kong is 2nd”. Ghidorah came third and the Emperor said “You could have been first why are you third?” Ghidorah replied with “The giant skinny iguana used his fire breath to stop me”. The Emperor was shocked. Then trex was 4th, the dog was 5th, Mothra was 6th, the Chinese Dragon was 7th, because he helped Mothra get to the finish line because her wing had a hole Zilla was 8th, King Shark was 9th because he was tired. The tiger was 10th, the worm 11th and last but not least, the rat he nearly died because he hit a tree when he got smacked and King Shark tried to eat him.
