Monday 22nd June – Year 5

Good Morning Year 5 – I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Have you looked at the post with some fabulous work from last week? Some certificates too!

Work from last week

There are two things from last week that I would like you to look at first today.

  1. Summer Reading Challenge

I have posted twice over the past couple of weeks and Miss Kinsella has also posted regarding the Summer Reading Challenge. I asked you to log on and look at ‘Find a Book’. No-one as yet has let me know that they have done this so could you have a look and let me know how you get on.

2) Oxford Owl

This was the post that I did last Wednesday:

I have set us up a class login at the Oxford Owl website where you can access some books to either read on the screen or vis audio books. The website is:
https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/
Go to the ‘My Class Login’ at the top. Our class name is ‘lings primary’ (all lower case) and the password is ‘YearFive’ (no gaps).
You can then choose a book that you would like to read. Let me know what you are reading and if you are enjoying listening as well as reading.

Again, I’d like you to have a look and let me know what you think. Jessica was the only person to blog about this last week as she was having trouble logging onto the website but I’ve checked it and it all looks fine. Be careful to type in the user name and password accurately.

Here are your tasks for today. Try to concentrate each day on Maths and English tasks as a priority. We are having a theme of ‘the Titanic’ this week as that is what I was told that those of you in school would like to do. Let me know if you have any other great ideas for a theme – I’ve asked but no-one has got back to me!

ICT – Safety at home

Discuss the following scenario with an adult at home.  Remember that you don’t have to blog this (but you’re welcome to if you would like) – the important thing is that you have that discussion at home with an adult.

Spellings

Here are our spelling words for this week:

marvellous, mischievous, disastrous, conscious, serious, enormous, anonymous, fabulous, furious, dangerous.

Can you spot the spelling pattern this week? What do you notice?

I’d like you to practise the spellings 3 times and then put each word into a sentence – this will ensure that you understand the meaning of the word as well as being able to spell it. Some of your sentences were brilliant and varied last week – keep up the great work.

Reading

As our theme for this week is ‘The Titanic’, we’ll start with some reading that will give you some background information about it.

Read the following text:

Now answer the following questions:

Maths

Warm-up

Go onto Time Tables Rockstars – play 10 quick games in Studio and let me know your scores. Are they better than last time you practised?

Now look at the following lesson:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/an-introduction-to-translation

This is an introduction to translation. Don’t worry if you don’t know what that is – it will all become clear. I’m gutted that I’m not teaching you this as I love this topic. It will build on work that you would have done in Year 4 and also work that you have looked at in Year 5.

Let me know at least 3 things that you have learnt. Did you enjoy this lesson?

Music

You’ve worked hard today so how about a little musical fun! Here’s a lesson about singing in harmony that I think you will enjoy:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/singing-in-harmony

Have a lovely day and you know how to contact me if you need me.

Take care,

Mrs Millard and Mrs Munro XX

Great practising of your spellings Evie.

Try to vary your sentences though – and include the correct punctuation!

If they tell you things that you don’t feel conformable about you can either end it and go tell an adult or you can not end it but still go get an adult to see what they are saying and then the adult will tell you what to do.

      4) Check this answer.
      6) Second class on the Titanic was equal to first class on many other ships.

    Good morning Mrs Millard,
I have signed up to the reading challenge and I have read one book so far. I am reading my collection of Shakespeare books. I had a look at the oxford owl website but I am reading my books from home.
    Reading
    1. The Titanic was sailing to New York.
    2. It took three years to build.
    3. The heavy metal doors were to keep the passengers safe if they detected water. They closed slowly to let the passengers escape if they had to.
    4. The lifeboats were kept on the boat deck.
    5. The people in third class didn’t have much money and in the text it said that it’s transportation and not luxury.
    6. They had nice big space, it was decorated nicely and second class on the Titanic was the same as first class on other ships.
    7. There were not enough lifeboats for all of the passengers to fit on. The people in third class wouldn’t have enough time to get to the top and be rescued on the lifeboats. Unfortunately, less people were rescued because they sent the lifeboats off not full.
    8. I would have preferred first class because I think you would have a better chance of being saved as you’re near the top of the boat and that’s where the lifeboats were kept. I would have enjoyed the swimming pool.
    9. I think it was the ship designer was to blame because they made the boat too big so the Captain couldn’t see where he was going and didn’t see the iceberg that he hit. I think Captain Lord thought the flares were from a party on the boat so the distress signals should have been clearer.

    Reading:
    1. The Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York.

    2. It took 26 months to build the Titanic.

    3. The reason they have heavy metal doors is to stop water from flooding in and it closes slowley to give time for the passengers to get through.

    4. All but two lifeboats were situated on the Boat Deck.

    5. Third class passengers would never have been allowed in second and first class areas, including deck-space, due to the risk of infectious disease spreading.

    6. Because Second-class offered passengers a spacious library/area, smoking room, outdoor promenade, and dining room. There was also a barber shop off the main staircase on E-Deck and a Purser’s Office where passengers could store their valuables.

7.As the half-filled boats rowed away from the ship, they were too far for other passengers to reach, and most lifeboats did not return to the wreck, due to fear of being swamped by drowning victims. Only lifeboats 4 and 14 returned to retrieve survivors from the water, some of whom later died.

    8. I would have went for second class ticket because if everyone else likes it i’m sure i would like it (Exept the smoking room that is not very good for me and it will be good not to smoke).

    9. It’s no ones fault the iceberg was hard to see but when they got close then they relised they had to turn left (My left) then once they were turning they couldn’t get out if the way in time because the ship was to slow and then it sank.
