Monday 8th June – Year 5

Good morning Year 5 and the start of another week.

Well done to out bloggers and e mailers on Friday – Sadia, Evie, Alex, Cyran, Dhanshri, Tanisa, Zain, Logan.

Check out the post from Miss Kinsella about the Summer Reading Challenge – I will be posting some activities over this week. Sign up – here is the website of you want more information:

https://readingagency.org.uk/news/media/the-summer-reading-challenge-launch-party—schedule-announced.html

Certificates this week –

Last week I awarded a certificate for everyone that blogged but I am going to do things a bit differently this week as there is a lot of consistency – many of you are blogging regularly while some are only blogging once a week. I am therefore basing certificates this week on effort. I will be expecting you to blog each day. I will also have a writer and mathematician of the week if someone really stands out. There will also be a Star of the Week – there could be more than one!

Please remember that you can ask questions via the blog or e mail if you are unsure about the tasks. I am here to help as I am in class. It is a bit tricky not being with you and being able to pull up a chair and show you how to do something, but I will try as best as I can remotely.

Our theme this week is going to be CHOCOLATE – I thought that might excite you!

Here are today’s tasks:

ICT Safety

Discuss the following with an adult at home:

Spellings

These are our spelling words this week:

co-operate, co-ordinate, co-author, co-own, re-enter, re-educate, re-examine.

What do you notice about these words?

We have looked at hyphens this year. Remember that it is different to a dash. Hyphens are used when a prefix is added which ends in the same letter as the start of the root word e.g. cO-Ordinate and rE-Enter. It does not need any spaces- unlike a dash.

Do you know what the prefixes ‘co’ and ‘re’ mean?

The following powerpoint should help to explain (we aren’t looking at all of the words on the powerpoint).

tp2-e-180-planit-y6-term-1a-w5-prefix-words-with-hyphens-spelling-pack_ver_5

Make sure that you know the meaning of the 7 spellings words above. Practise each one a few times until you can spell it confidently. Then put each word into a sentence.

Reading

Read the following text and answer the questions:

Maths

Task 1

We are going to do dome revision this week on decimals and fractions – it’s been a while since we looked at this in school and I think it would be good to refresh. look at the following link – there is a video, a learning summary, a quiz and then a worksheet for you to complete.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrsc86f

Blog your answers.

Task 2

Go onto Times Tables Rock Stars. Play 10 games and let me know your scores for each game.

Spanish

Look at the following video which will help you to say your birthday in Spanish.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/saying-your-birthday-in-spanish-2be43d

Blog me with the results – and anything else that you learn!

Have fun!

Great answers for reading- check the definition of ‘sustainable’. We’ve looked this recently in Geography too.
      4) Fairtrade guarantees a minimum price for the farmers.

Maths – did you click on the worksheet attached to the website? It’s underneath Activity 2.

Spellings – you are supposed to be looking at those words that I sent to Mum – ignore the main blog for spellings and focus on those words instead.

Co means half something like if you running for a school president so one would get co president. It can also mean second.

Re means you do something again like you re do you exam.

    Maths
    task 1
    Example 1:
Let’s take a look at how to convert 0.7 into a fraction.
Step 1: Put the decimal into the place value chart.

Step 2: From the place value chart, you can see which column the number ends in – the tenths column (Tths).
The denominator becomes 10 and the numerator is whichever numbers follow the decimal point.
    Therefore:
    0.7 = ⁷⁄₁₀
Since there are no ones before the decimal point, you don’t have to include the zero since there are no wholes.
