Monday 8th June – Year 5
Good morning Year 5 and the start of another week.
Well done to out bloggers and e mailers on Friday – Sadia, Evie, Alex, Cyran, Dhanshri, Tanisa, Zain, Logan.
Check out the post from Miss Kinsella about the Summer Reading Challenge – I will be posting some activities over this week. Sign up – here is the website of you want more information:
Certificates this week –
Last week I awarded a certificate for everyone that blogged but I am going to do things a bit differently this week as there is a lot of consistency – many of you are blogging regularly while some are only blogging once a week. I am therefore basing certificates this week on effort. I will be expecting you to blog each day. I will also have a writer and mathematician of the week if someone really stands out. There will also be a Star of the Week – there could be more than one!
Please remember that you can ask questions via the blog or e mail if you are unsure about the tasks. I am here to help as I am in class. It is a bit tricky not being with you and being able to pull up a chair and show you how to do something, but I will try as best as I can remotely.
Our theme this week is going to be CHOCOLATE – I thought that might excite you!
Here are today’s tasks:
ICT Safety
Discuss the following with an adult at home:
Spellings
These are our spelling words this week:
co-operate, co-ordinate, co-author, co-own, re-enter, re-educate, re-examine.
What do you notice about these words?
We have looked at hyphens this year. Remember that it is different to a dash. Hyphens are used when a prefix is added which ends in the same letter as the start of the root word e.g. cO-Ordinate and rE-Enter. It does not need any spaces- unlike a dash.
Do you know what the prefixes ‘co’ and ‘re’ mean?
The following powerpoint should help to explain (we aren’t looking at all of the words on the powerpoint).
tp2-e-180-planit-y6-term-1a-w5-prefix-words-with-hyphens-spelling-pack_ver_5
Make sure that you know the meaning of the 7 spellings words above. Practise each one a few times until you can spell it confidently. Then put each word into a sentence.

Maths
task 1
Example 1:
Let’s take a look at how to convert 0.7 into a fraction.
Step 1: Put the decimal into the place value chart.
Step 2: From the place value chart, you can see which column the number ends in – the tenths column (Tths).
The denominator becomes 10 and the numerator is whichever numbers follow the decimal point.
Therefore:
0.7 = ⁷⁄₁₀
Since there are no ones before the decimal point, you don’t have to include the zero since there are no wholes.
Thanks Alex,
