Friday 5th June – Year 5

Good morning Pankhurst Class – it’s Friday!

Well done to all of our fantastic bloggers and e mailers yesterday – Tanisa, Lydia, Evie, Sadia, Jessica, Alex, Dhanshri, Dan, Zain, Logan.

I have put another blog up this morning (called ‘Well done Year 5) with certificates for everyone who has blogged this week.

I’d like you to have a look at the following – discuss it with whoever is at home with you.

Spellings

You should have been looking at the spellings below all week – a column a day. Well done to all of you that have done that this week. Many of you spelt these words very accurately so I’d like you today, to focus on practising any words that you spelt incorrectly. You will then perfect the spellings of these words.

English

I’d like you to research your favourite underwater creature – it could be a fish, mammal, reptile, crustacean etc. Find out information about what they look like, how they behave, their habitat, their behaviour and how they interact with other creatures, how they reproduce, their young – and anything else that you find fascinating about this creature.

When you have done this, I’d like you to create a diary entry showing me a day when you went deep sea diving and came across your favourite animal. Write about exactly what you saw. Try to include as much of your research about the creature into the diary entry as possible – really show off to me about how much you know about this creature. I’m  looking forward to reading these!

Maths

Today, I am going to set you a number of tasks. You don’t have to do them all but have a go at as many as you can. When you blog, make sure that you write the Task number next to your answers.

Task 1

Task 2

Task 3

Task 4

Task 5

Task 6

Task 7

Play this fractions, decimals and percentages online game

https://nrich.maths.org/1249

Task 8

Here are some percentage problems

 percentages problems

Other work

See if you can solve this ‘Under the Sea’ wordsearch

How did you do? Here are the answers (no cheating!):

T-A-009-Under-the-Sea-Wordsearch

I’d like you to create your own wordsearch. It can be as large as you like – obviously the larger it is, the more challenging it will be. I suggest your research a lot of words before you start that are related to the sea – then you have a choice of which words to use and where to place them. These can go into your Home Learning packs but I’d love it if you could e mail them to me – I can then try to solve them!

One day i was diving deep down in the water and i came across a turtle my favorite animal. I felt its shell and it felt really hard but it loved it when i touched it . But then it was hungry i knew that because as soon as a jellyfish came across the turtle ate it. After that they went to their home which is a muddy area.

      Hi Sadia,

A good effort – could you have elaborated on its habitat and its young?
Don’t forget the word ‘I’ should always be a capital letter.

      Thanks Evie,

Check if you have used the correct ‘their’.
Does your second sentence make sense?
      What’s a ‘testudine’ and ‘catilaginous’?
Have you included facts about their habitat, behaviour, young?

    Dear diary,
One day I was in the ocean and saw my favourite sea creature a dolphin so I felt them and they were so sooth and soft. Since they smooth, soft and silky that’s why I like them so much. Here are some fun facts about them, they stick to there mothers for a very long time , they dive up to 1000 feet deep. Dolphins have 2 stomach (that’s amazing.) Dolphins are carnivores and are highly intelligent. Here’s an amazing fact I guess there are nearly 40 species of dolphins swim in the ocean of the world.🐬 🐬🐳

      Hi Dhanshri,

      Check spelling of ‘there’.
Well done for including lots of great facts about dolphins. Did you incorporate them into a diary entry about your day deep sea diving though?

      Thanks Dhanshri,

I’m intrigued about Task 1 – how did you reach those conclusions?
      Tasks 2 and 3 – well done!
Have a little look at Task 5 – the best thing to do is to find equivalent fractions so that the denominator is 100.If the denominator is 100 it’s much easier – for example 3/100 is 3% and 78/100 is 78%. If we do the first one together – 120/300 is equivalent to 40/100 – this is 40%. I hope this helps.
Task 6 – how did you get the answer of 4%?

        I got 4% like this.

        4/10=adults
Rest are boys and girls. So to make 10/10 you need 6/10.

        2 boys
4 girls add them up makes 6.

          Thanks for responding Dhanshri,

You did brilliantly until you got to the 6/10 part! This means that 6/10 are the girls and boys. We know that there are twice as many girls as boys, so that means that of the 6/10, 4/10 must be girls and 2/10 must be boys – that as twice as many girls. 4/10 as a percentage is 40% – 4/10 = 40/100 = 40%. Does this help?

    English:
My favourite sea creature is a Shark. A Shark is a carnivore sea creature if it sees a person moving very fast the Shark will think it’s a fish. And they a like a fish but bigger, sharp, pointy teeth and sometimes they have scratch marks on them and their colors have grey and white and their eye colors are black. Sharks form large groups, and all cooperate first by surrounding the prey. They swim around looking for some food. Their behavour is agressive because they attack fishes. They don’t get along with other fishes or whales They attack them.In 20 million years ago There was a mega Shark called Megalodon.

      Hi Logan,

Great work today. Tasks 1-4 are all correct – well done. You are really getting the hang of percentages.

Task 5 – this was tricky! You got them all right apart from the first one – 120/300 = 40/100 = 0.4 = 40%. I think I know what you did – did you make it 30/100?
Task 6 – How did you get 6%.

You’ve worked really hard on Maths this week – keep it up next week.

Well spotted Logan. You are welcome about the certificate – you earnt it!

Task 6 – if 4/10 of the audience are adults then 6/10 must be girls and boys. If there are twice as many girls then there must be 4/10 girls and 2/10 boys. If 4/10 are girls, that’s 40%. I hope this helps.
