Wednesday 3rd June – Year 5
Good morning Year 5 – how are you all?
Just to let you know – I (Mrs Millard) will be responding to you on the blogs and e mails every day from this week onwards. It will no longer be me on Monday-Wednesday and Mrs Leeming on Thursday/Friday – I’ll be doing every day. What’s really nice about me doing all week is that I can see how well you are all doing and how hard you are working over the whole week. This means that I can award certificates for great work on a Friday!!
Well done to all of our great bloggers and e mailers yesterday – Evie, Mason, Sadia, Logan, Dan, Jessica, Dhanshri, Alex, Tanisa and Zain.
Well done to the following who tested themselves on their spellings and let me know their scores – Mason, Dhanshri and Zain. Has everyone else been looking at your spellings this week?
Well done to Tanisa – the only person to complete the leaflet task – well done!
Spellings
Day three of our revision of Year 3/4 words. I want you to focus on the third column (28 words). As before, ask someone at home to test you on the words, mark them and then blog me with your score.
English
Look at the following video – the Legend of the Crab Phare. Before doing so, check the definition of ‘phare’ and ‘crustacean’. The few lines underneath the link give a synopsis of what the clip is about.
https://www.literacyshed.com/crab-phare.html
I want you to create a piece of writing after watching it. This can be your choice from the following:
- Retell the story in the 1st person – this could be either as the crab or a visitor to the region
- Create a newsreport about the events in the story
- Create a persuasive piece asking humans to leave the crab alone
- Retell the story but with the crab being the monster of the story – what was his motive for collecting the ships? Remember – he is the baddie!
Whichever option you choose, it should include some description of the creature, along with setting and plot details.
Important – there are some expectations with this piece of writing (just as there always is in school!). Many of you have ignored this on previous blogs so please remember the following:
- I am expecting the amount of writing that you would normally produce in a lesson at school.
- Because of the above, paragraphs should definitely feature in your writing.
- Take care with punctuation.
- Read through your writing when you finish and check if anything needs changing/up-levelling (just as you would do in school).
- Have you used ambitious vocabulary?
- Take care with spelling.
Maths
You are doing well with our percentage work so far this week. Yesterday we looked at finding some other percentages, including 10%.
- Remind me – how do you find 10% of something?
- If you know how to find 10%, how could you find 20%?
- What about 30%?
- If you know how to find 10%, how could you find 5%?
- What about 70%?
Now try these:
Art
I want you to create an piece of ‘Under the Sea’ artwork. You can use whatever you like to achieve this – paints, coloured pencils, collage, etc and it can be either a scene, a sea creature – whatever you like! It can be 2-D or even 3-D!
Please e mail them to me – I can’t wait to see what you create!
If you are struggling for ideas, the following video is a lovely step by step guide of how you might draw an ocean scene – you can just follow it as you draw!
Have fun!

Hello Cyran – it’s great to hear from you! I hope you and your family are all well.
Is this today’s Maths? We have been looking at percentages all week so you might find it helpful to look back at Monday and Tuesday’s blog as I attached some clips for you to watch.

Hi Dan,
Well done with these. I like your logic for question 2 – I was just thinking of getting out of the traffic jam quicker!
Did you make up a question of your own?
Mrs Millard XX
English.
Once there was a huge crab in the sea and he had something on his shell it was a lighthouse. he kept the light house above the sea so people could see it . one day a group of people came on their boat and started taking pictures of the light house and the crab helped them by picking them up so they could see the lighthouse after that the crab fell asleep. While he was asleep the humans built a whole city on top of the crab so when he woke up he felt weak . He tried to get up then the whole city fell down . Suddenly the crab turned really small amd made a little lighthouse.

Mrs Millard XX
One day I decided to travel in the sea and bought all my friends with and we discovered a big crab hiding under the sea bed but it was strange because all my friends were disappearing with the little boats it turns out the crab was bad and was taking boats .But loads of days went past, we had a great idea why dont we have a party and start building some houses … however the had come the crab starting moving and made the buildings trouble to the ground and then the crab started to sink more and more until we coundlent see the top . Suddenly a weird thing happened there was another one but smaller and a baby …
Hi Evie,
Just have a read through this a check that it all makes sense – the first sentence is too long. Also check the bit after the first ellipsis.
Also, don’t forget apostrophes – don’t, couldn’t.
Mrs Millard XX
Maths

1) Double check this – what’s 50% of 18? Remember that this is half.
All of the others are great. Remember that ‘I’ should always be a capital letter.
Did you make up a question of your own?
Mrs Millard XX
One day I had an object on top of my head it was a lighthouse so I lifted it up so every human can see so that’s what I did. Humans took pictures every day but one day I felt sleepy so I took a little nap. But what I didn’t know is that the humans were building a city, a city that was too heavy so I woke up and felt weak to weak to lift the whole city up so my scales started to shed and every building fell. After, the terrible accident I shrunk and decided to lift one thing the lighthouse.
The end.
Thanks Dhanshri,
Did you include lots of description about the characters and set? You’re really good at this in school!
Mrs Millard XX
One happy ,joyful day me and my friends went sailing to Find the crab under the sea.
I was confused because all my friends have been disappearing.me and the rest of my friends where taking pictures of the light house that the crap kept on his back until …….. we where on top of the crap we went all over the place. Each side but that never stopped us from taking pictures of the lighthouse. Suddenly, a light switched on I had an amazing idea To build lots and lots of houses to have a party ,everybody agrees
With me , a few hours have past and the party is about to start……….however a few hours into the party the crap started to move and then all the houses started to tumble into the sea.the crap started to sink ,sink until we drowned……..until ………something magical happened…………..a baby crap had be born…..
Hi Jessica,
A few of your sentences have capital letters in them by mistake – can you spot them?
Remember that crab ends with a ‘b’.
Don’t forget spelling of where/were.
Mrs Millard XX
Hello Mrs Millard,
Sorry i didn’t do any work yesterday,I got to spend some time with my Nanny and Pappy in their garden.
On yesterdays spellings list I got 23/28 and on today’s I got 24/28.
Hi Lydia,
Thanks for letting me know – I was getting a bit worried as it’s unusual not to hear from you each day. I think that spending time with Nanny and Pappy is long overdue though! Did you have a lovely time?
Well done on your spellings.
Mrs Millard XX

Well done – you are the only person so far today to add a question of their own.
Double check question 2 – remember it’s about being stuck in a traffic jam so you’d want to choose the least amount of time.
I like your comment about question 4 – I think that I would pick none too!
Mrs Millard XX
I would have 10% of 100 because it’s 10.
I would have 20% of 50 minutes because it’s 10.
