Year 5- Thursday 14th May

Ola todos la class!  Hello all the class.

Let’s start with Maths today.

Last week we found out about perimeter.  Now let’s look at area.    Perimeter was a 1d measurement.  a measurement of length (around the outside of a shape.) Area is a 2d measurement.  It measures how much space a flat shape takes up.  Imagine a cake.  The perimeter would be how much ribbon we need to go around the outside of the cake.  The area would be how much space the cake takes up on the plate.

Now try these…

English

The passage below is plagued by over use of the word ‘and’ which makes it dreadfully boring! It is also hard for the reader to read in one go, as they will run out of breath.  Re -write the passage replacing the ands with better words, turning it into sentences.

Until he was four years old James Henry Trotter had a happy life and he lived peacefully with his mother and father in a beautiful house beside the sea and there were always plenty of other children for him to play with and there was the sandy beach for him to run about on and the ocean to paddle in and it was the perfect life for a small boy and James’s mother and father went to London to do some shopping and there a terrible thing happened to both of them suddenly got eaten by an enormous angry rhinoceros which had escaped from the London Zoo and as you can well imagine it was a rather nasty experience for two such gentle parents and it was far nastier for James than either of them and their troubles were all over in a jiffy and they were dead and gone in thirty five seconds flat and  Poor James was still very much alive and all at once he found himself alone and frightened in a vast unfriendly world and the lovely house by the seaside had to be sold immediately and the little boy carrying nothing but a small suitcase containing a pair of pyjamas and a tooth brush was sent away to live with his aunts.

History

One of the best bits of Ancient Greek history is the Gods (has anyone read Percy Jackson?).  Find out about some of the Gods and present your work however you like-  facts,  a poster, a powerpoint, top trump cards.

Have fun!

    Good Morning Mrs Leeming,
I did 2×8 to get 16. 16 is the area of the rectangle.
    A) I rounded 6.8 to 7cm and the 3.4 to 3cm. 7×3=21cm
    B) I rounded 7.75 to 8cm and because I knew all the sides were equal I did 8×8=64cm
    C) I rounded 2.8 to 3cm and I did the 19.1 to 19cm. I did 3×10=30 and then I did 3×9=27. Then I did 30+27=57cm.

The order from biggest to smallest is B, C, A.

Ones when he was four years old James, Henry, Trotter had a joyful life and he lived peacefully with his mother and father in a beautiful house beside the sea. And there were always plenty of other children for him to play with. And there was a sandy beach for him to run around there was a ocean to paddle in. It was the perfect life for a small boy like James. James’s mother and father went to go London to do some shopping and there was a terrible news something happened to both of James parents . suddenly they got hit by an enormous angry rhinoceros which had escaped from the London Zoo and as you can imagine it was a rather nasty experience for two such gentle parents and it was far nastier for James than either of them and their troubles were all over the place and his parents were dead and gone in thirty five seconds flat and Poor James was still very much alive and all at once he found himself alone and frightened in a vast unfriendly world and the lovely house by the seaside had to be sold immediately and the little poor boy was carrying nothing but a small suitcase containing a pair of pyjamas and a tooth brush was sent away to live with his aunts.

We don’t usually start a sentence with an and. You can take the ands out and just add in a full stop and a capital.

It was far loathsome for James than either of them all there troubles were all over in a blink of an eye .Poor James was still very much alive then he found him self alone worried about the journey ahead of him.
