Friday 1st May 2020 – Year 2 Home learning Tasks

Happy Friday Year 2! Well done for coming to the end of another week of home learning! We have been really impressed be some of the work we have been sent this week again. Look out for your well done blog post and certificates later if you’ve sent us work or comments this week!

I think Miss Duncan and myself both feel like this about all of you! We really do hope to see you back at school soon.

Here are your learning tasks for today.

English.

We are finishing our week looking at the NHS and Key Workers by learning about a charity event that many people got involved with last week. You might have watched this yourself. Can you read the text and answer the questions below.

Write a few sentences about whether you think it is a good idea to help raise money for charity and why. If you were going to raise money what could you do? It could be a sponsored read for example. Maybe you have already done something that you could share with us. Remember to use punctuation, phonics for spellings and to keep your handwriting neat.

Maths

Can you solve these shape questions? Make sure you read the question carefully to see what operation you have to use. A little hint, looking carefully at the number of edges and vertices could be important to solving the questions! Remember, in Year 2 we use the word vertices instead of corners when talking about shape properties.

Common Exception Word Spellings.

These words are very important to help us make our writing sparkle. Instead of handwriting this week we are going to practice reading and spelling these as it is important we practice these.

Can you read these 14 words to whoever is helping with your learning.
Can you copy these words twice, having a good look at the spellings as you write them.
Can you now have a go at spelling the words. Get your helper to read the word to you so that you can spell it and see how many you can get right.

many          clothes        busy            people

water          again           half              money

Mr              Mrs             parents         Christmas

everybody     even

Please note for Mr, Mrs and Christmas to be spelt correctly they must have a capital letter at the start.

Phonics.
It is important that we practice spelling phonetic sounds in all of the different ways they can be written. It helps us to read and write words that they are in several times so you should follow all the steps to help you practice.

We are going to focus on the sound ‘oo’ pronounced ‘oo’ as in boot.
There are 8 different spellings of this sound. This sound can be spelt as
oo as in boot
ue as in glue
u-e, (the spelling is split in the word) as in tune
ew as in flew
ou as in you
ui as in fruit
ough as in through
u as in ruin

Can you read these words with the sound ‘oo’
shoots, blue, dune, stew, you, fruity, ruined, through

Can you write the words below thinking about which spelling of the sound they have. Ask an adult to read the word for you to so you can try to spell it. Remember there is one word for each spelling of the sound so you can’t use the same spelling more than once.
hoops, clue, prune, new, group, juice, rumour, through

Can you sort these words into the correct boxes? Look carefully at the spellings of the sound in each word. You might want to draw the table to help you.

Story Time.

Can you complete another of Bella’s reading challenges.

You could also choose to watch a story tonight. We have chosen another traditional tale that you might enjoy.

Have a wonderful day and don’t forget to share your work with us.

    1. Name two ways people joined in ‘The Big Night In’.
    1) Donating.
    2) Dancing.
    2. Why do you think the event was called ‘The Big Night In’
It was an opportunity to praise the heroes who are caring for us.
    3. People around the country are joining in by buying special T-SHIRTS. Others are using their DAILY exercise allowance to run for 5km and then donating £5.
    4. Tick the statements which are true.
    – The first BBC Children in Need telethon was broadcast in 1980.
    – 2.6 challenges start on Sunday.
    5. “It is the opportunity to praise heroes caring for us”.
Tick the word that’s closest in meaning to ‘opportunity’ in this sentence.
    Chance.

I defiantly think it is a good idea to raise money for charity, as there is children who benefit from the charities as like where my mummy works in the special need school.
