Thursday 30th April 2020 – Year 2 Home Learning Tasks

Good morning Year 2! I hope you are having a lovely week and enjoying our learning. You may have noticed the link this week to the NHS and what is going on in the world at the moment. We are currently all living a small part of an event in History and we thought you might like to learn a little bit about the positive things that are also happening at the moment.

Here are your learning tasks for today. Remember to leave your comments on this blog post or email you questions or work to us at yeartwo@lingsprimary.org  We look forward to seeing what you have been up to.

English

The NHS has always been very important to us but in these tricky times we have shown lots of love and hope to those working in the NHS and it has become even more special to us. But what is the NHS? Read this piece of text to find out a little bit more and answer the questions below it in full sentences. Remember to use your phonics for spelling, punctuation and to keep your handwriting neat.

  1. What does NHS stand for?
  2. Who created the NHS?
  3. When was the NHS created?
  4. Why did he create the NHS?
  5. Why do people working in the NHS need to wear PPE at the minute?

Do you think the creation of the NHS was a good idea? Write a few sentences to explain what you think. Remember to use punctuation, conjunctions to explain your answers (because, but, or) and to keep your handwriting neat.

Maths.

We are carrying on with our 2D and 3D shape exploration today. Did you get all the riddles right yesterday? Here are todays riddles. Same as yesterday, can you guess the shape being described? They are all shapes we have learnt about in class and you can leave your answers in the comments section on the blog. We will post the answers this evening on the blog for you to check.

Common Exception Words Spellings.

These words are very important to help us make our writing sparkle. Instead of handwriting this week we are going to practice reading and spelling these as it is important we practice them.

Can you read these 14 words to whoever is helping with your learning.

bath              hour             move         prove

improve        sure              sugar         eye

could            should          would        who

whole           any

Can you copy these words twice, having a good look at the spellings as you write them.
Can you now have a go at spelling the words. Get your helper to read the word to you so that you can spell it and see how many you can get right.

Phonics

It is important that we practice spelling phonetic sounds in all of the different ways they can be written. It helps us to read and write words that they are in several times so you should follow all the steps to help you practice.

We are going to focus on the sound ‘oa’. This is pronounced ‘oa’ as in boat.
There are 7 different spellings of this sound. This sound can be spelt as:
oa as in boat
ow as in grow
o-e, (the spelling is split in the word) as in home
oe as in toe
o as in open
oul as in shoulder (You need to use your posh voice for this spelling!)
ough as in dough

Can you read these words with the sound ‘oa’
goat, know, Joe, slope, okay, boulder, though

Can you write the words below thinking about which spelling of the sound they have. Ask an adult to read the word for you to so you can try to spell it. Remember there is one word for each spelling of the sound so you can’t use the same spelling more than once.

showing, floating, rope, over, mould, no, doughnut

Can you sort these words into the correct boxes? Look carefully at the spellings of the sound in each word. You might want to draw the table to help you.

Story Time.

Can you complete another one of Bella’s reading challenges?

Enjoy your learning today and don’t forget to share it with us! We miss working with you all.

Miss Battams and Miss Duncan.

Elliot knew the names hex/pent/octagon but couldn’t remember which was which. We had to draw some of them using the clues to help us work them out.
