# Friday 1st May – Year 1

It’s Friday Year 1!

We hope that you’ve had another fantastic week of learning at home. It’s nearly time for a well-deserved break over the weekend. Before you get started, here is another question to discuss with an adult about how to stay safe online:

Here are today’s set of activities:

1. Sounds-Write Phonics

We are going to read some more of our story today. We have read up to the part where the shoemaker and his wife were hiding to see who had been making the shoes overnight. Do you remember what they saw in the workshop? Carry on reading and find out what happens next:

How could the shoemaker and his wife say thank you to the elves? What would be a nice thing to do?

Would you give them chocolate? Would you sing for them? Would you hug them? What would you do?

Write a list of different things that the shoemaker and his wife could do to say thank you – remember how to create a list. We don’t need to write in sentences and we put each new idea on a new line.

1. Maths

Invade the recycling bin!

Find some 3D Shapes that you can handle and colour. Explore the shapes and introduce these new mathematical terms (vertices, faces and edges) with support from this video clip:

Please note: the video refers to vertices as ‘corners’. Please discuss this with your children and make sure they know to refer to it correctly as ‘vertices’.

Can you investigate how many vertices, faces and edges your 3D Shapes have? Use a coloured pen to help you and mark them as you go along!

1. RE

Can we finish our own Torah scroll? (Judaism)
Before the term finished, the children learnt what a ‘Torah’ is. If you are unsure – practise your basic computing skills by searching the question: ‘What is a Torah?’ online. Make sure that you ask an adult to help you with this.

Watch this video of how the Torah is written: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBW3sRK6h5A

Now it’s time for you to have a go for yourselves. Get some pens and paper, and copy this in the centre of your page:

Don’t forget to write from right to left if you can!

Just for fun: Stick a straw on each end of your ‘Story of Creation’ (created last week) and then roll the cartoon strip from each end towards the middle to make a scroll. Then wrap your ‘Torah’ cover (created today) around the scroll and sellotape or stick it together to make a cover for your Torah. Some may wish to add a Star of David symbol – which is two triangles overlapping.

Have a great weekend – have fun and stay safe,

Miss Simons, Mrs Brookes and Mrs Roberts : )
