Wednesday 22nd April – Year 5

Hello Pankhurst Class,

We hope you are all well. A massive thank you to everyone who is responding on this blog – especially the few of you who complete ALL of the work EVERY DAY. You know who you are so jolly well done – certificates will be on their way to you very soon.

Here are your tasks for today.

English – write a diary entry for the future. By that we mean a diary entry that would be written as soon as ‘lockdown’ is finished. What are your hopes and dreams? What will you do first? How many things are you impatient to do? Where will you go? Who will you be eager to see? Mention in lots of detail your hopes and dreams now you are ‘free’! How has lockdown changed you (if it has) and what are the positives now. There may of course, be some things that you will miss about lockdown like lie- ins and  extra time with family!

Maths – What is a ‘net’ of a shape. We don’t mean as in a fishing net – the word means something else in a mathematical context. Give us a definition of what it means.

Think about the following shapes and tell us what shapes would be in their net:

Cube, cuboid, cylinder, square based pyramid.

What would the net look like. Have a go at trying to draw it and either send us the photograph of your work or put it in your home learning folder.

Challenge – if you finish all of the above and would like us to send you some nets that you could print off and make, let us know via the blog and we will send them to you. You could make it, decorate it or use it to give someone a gift in.

Science – revision of our work on ‘Properties and materials’.

What is a ‘mixture’? We discussed last term how we could separate different mixtures. How would you separate the following mixtures:

  • marbles and multi-link cubes
  • marble and corks
  • sweets or beads of different colours
  • paper clips and matchsticks
  • sand, and water
  • sand, large stones and gravel
  • salt and water

Are the above ‘reversible’ or ‘irreversible’? How do you know?

The following link will help you:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcvv4wx/articles/zw7tv9q

Write a description about the separation techniques that could be used for at least 2 of the above examples. Link your description to the properties of the materials involved. The following vocabulary will be useful:

Enjoy! Remember that if you have any questions or queries for us, you can write them in your blog post or use the Year 5 e mail address.

Take care,

Mrs Millard, Mrs Leeming and Mrs Munro XXX

Well done Leon for replying. You’ve used some time conjunctions to explain when things are happening. Try to remember your full stops between sentences though.

Do you think that there is more than one possible net for a cube?

      Hi Dhanshri,

I agree with you – I think that there will be lots of parties!
I think that we will appreciate the little things much more – like going to the park whenever we want.

MATHS: A net is a 3D shape folded out flat to make a 3D shape. The net of a cube is a cross and the net of a triangular prism is a rectangle with a rombus like shape.

SCIENCE:To separate salt and water you need to boil it to 100 degrees until the water evaporates and you only have salt left. 2.to separate sand and water you need a strainer to filtrate your sand and water once it’s done you should have water in a container and the sand in the strainer.

      Thank you Dhanshri,

You’re right – the net of a 3-D shape can be folded out but this will make a 2-D shape.
Do you think that there is more than one possible net for a cube?

    Hello Mrs Millard
    Dear diary

When lockdown is finished I want to go back to school and improve my art
and maybe start a YouTube channel ,so I can show my art to the world and,
I might do a bit of memes in my channel. (Memes are funny jokes that go
viral. )I am mostly excited about meeting all my friends at school and listening
to the star wars theme when we put a medal on someone :D.

      Hi Dan,

It’s good to hear from you again.

Well done for using brackets in your writing. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again too!
You’re right – the Star Wars theme is definitely a ‘Lings’ thing that has been missed.

    Good afternoon Mrs Millard,

    English
    Dear diary,
LOCKDOWN IS OVER!! So first I’m going to visit my Nan and Pap because they are important to me. Next I will go to Silhouette to see all my friends and I’m going to dance! After I will go and see my friends from school. Finally I will go and see my family and my teachers.

The reason why I’m going to dance is so I can dance with Sam my dance teacher and dance with all my friends in real life instead of by myself in front of the laptop and my friends being on the screen. I am going to go to parks and fairs with my brothers and I want to go on holiday to Cornwall because it is my favourite place to go. I have dreamt about being able to go back to Flarmbards (a theme park) and the beach with all of my family.

      Hi Lydia,

I love your first sentence in capitals – we will all be so relieved!
I’m sure that you are enjoying dancing at home but I know it’s more fun with lots of company.

Roll on to a time when we can do all of those things!

    Science
The separation technique that I would use for the marbles and corks is water because the corks would float and the marbles would sink to the bottom.

The separation technique I would use for paper clips and matchsticks would be magnets because the paperclips would attract to the magnet and leave the matchsticks in the box.

    Maths
I emailed you photos of the nets I made for the shapes.

A net is a 2D representation of a 3D shape that it represents.A net of a shape is what it would look like if that shape was opened flat.

A net is what a 3D (three dimensional)shape would look like if it were opened flat. For example:
A cube,if this cube were made of paper or card this is called the net of a cube

A mixture is a combination of two or more elements together it could be liquid, solid or gas.
For separation you could use a sieve it is a easy form of separation. For example:
Lets say MARBLES and SAND that an easy separation depending on the size of the marble
