Monday 23rd March – Year 5

Hello Pankhurst Class,

We hope that you’ve had a brilliant weekend and have been spending some quality time with your families.
Today is the first day of our home learning experience! Hopefully you have got your home learning packs to keep you busy and we will be posting daily activities for you to complete whilst you are at home. The packs can be completed once daily tasks are finished.

Here are your first set of activities:

  1. Tell Mrs Leeming and Mrs Millard how you are going to organise your time this week. Are you in school every day? If not, how do you plan on organising your day? What time will you dedicate to Maths, English and other curriculum subjects? How will you make time for exercise, reading and anything else you need to plan in? Tell us during the week, how this going – how else are you filling your time?

2.  Complete the ‘Floating Fortress’ writing challenge already posted.

3.  Tell us everything that you can about equivalent fractions. We have been looking at this for the past two weeks and even if you haven’t been in school               for all of that time, there should be lots that you can tell us already. What is a equivalent fraction? How do you find an equivalent fraction?

What happens to the numerator and the denominator? How do you know a fraction is equivalent to another one? Can you give examples of equivalent           fractions? Use the internet to find out anything else that may be relevant.

4. See the previous post about reading while you are at home. Begin to log your reading in your Reading Records as we will be asking for a weekly update            about your reading while you are at home. We will also be asking you to complete book reviews so make any notes that you think may be useful.

5. Science – revision of ‘Properties of materials’

  • What are the 3 states of matter?
  •  Give 5 examples of each of solids, liquids and gases.
  • According to the Particle Model, what are the properties of solids, liquids and gases, Describe how the particles move around in a solid, liquid and a gas. How do they move/behave? Describe this in words on the blog and if you also want to draw a diagram, this could go into your packs.
  • Write a definition for the following vocabulary: particle, bonds, transparency, translucency, hardness, magnetism, thermal conductor, electrical conductor, mixture, dissolve, soluble/insoluble, solution, reversible change.

The following clip that we looked at might help you:

Take care – missing you all already!

Mrs Millard

        Good morning,
As I am not necessarily needing to to school I am going to stick to the same schedule that I received in my homework pack.

When you take one fraction you have to do the same thing to the numerator and the denominator.
    Eg.

3 fifths times by 3=9 fifteenths

You know its equivalent if you can times the numerator and the denominator by the same multiple.

Can you divide both the numerator and denominator too?

Good afternoon Mrs Millard and Mrs Leeming.

I made a rota with my Mum so I know what I’m doing each day. Everyday I’m starting with fitness and then I have maths for half an hour and then I do reading for 15 minutes. After I have a little break I have grammar and English for an hour, afterwards I have lunch and free time. After lunch I will do other curriculum activities. I am also practising my artistic skills in the afternoons.

Today I have done the Floating Fortress writing task and the equivalent fractions work so far.

Solids – wood, metal, plastic, pen, rope. Liquids – milk, water, coffee, juice, ink. Gasses – Oxygen, Carbon -Dioxide, Helium, Nitrogen, Carbon – Monoxide.

Solids are a fixed shape. The particles are fixed and are in a regular shape. There are no gaps between then so they cant’t be compressed.
Liquids are a fixed shape and all the particles flow around each other, the strong bonds means that they are mostly together.
Gasses are not a fixed shape. All of the particles move around each other rapidly. Gasses are also invisible.

Particle is a part of a whole.
Bonds are something that form together.
Transparency is something that is see through. (for example glass)
Translucency is where light can get through but its not clear.
    Hardness is very solid.
Magnetism is something that attracts. (for example metal)
    Thermal conductor lets heat through.
    Electrical conductor lets electric through.
Mixture means things that have been combined together.
Dissolve changes state from solid to liquid. (for example sugar in hot water)
Soluble is where it can be dissolved so insoluble means it cant be.
Solution is two liquids formed together.
Reversible change means you can change it back to what it was. (for example ice to water)
