This term we will be learning about the religion Judaism.
The main question for the first session is “What is Hannukah?”
Hannukah is an important Jewish festival and today we will find out about where it came from and why it is celebrated.

Hannukah is a Jewish celebration
This years Hannukah starts on the Evening of 28th November
It started by a King called Antiochus IV made every Jew believe in the Gods of the Olimp and everyone was against that, a small group of Jews called the Maccabees miraculously defeated the Kings army
Then they found the temple destroyed
They rebuilt it and rededicated it to God
There was a jar of oil that would last for one day but it lasted for eight days and by then they found more oil
That’s why Hannukah last for eight days
You light one of the eight candles everyday
A long time ago a Syrian king called Antiochus, banned the Jews from worshiping God. He put a big statue of himself in their temple and ordered them to bow before it. However the Jews refused to obey him, because the Ten Commandments forbid them to worship anyone other than God. A small group of Jews, called the Maccabees fought back against the kings army. After three years, they won the war and recaptured Jerusalem from the Syrians! When the Jews went back to their temple, they saw that it had nearly been destroyed! They cleaned and repaired the temple. When they finished tidying up, they rededicated it to God. They did this by lighting the lamp, which was a symbol of God’s presence. They only had one small jar of oil, which was only enough for one day. somehow miraculously the lamp stayed alight for eight days. That is why Jews light a candle every day of Hanukkah.

Hanukkah is an important Jewish festival. It started in 160BC. There are 9 sticks on the candle holder and they light one candle a day. It’s celebrated before Christmas for eight days and you get a present or money for each day. They play a game with a dreidel and eat food that is cooked in oil like pancakes and doughnuts. They celebrate the miracle of oil.
The Hanukkah holiday commemorates the triumph of the Maccabees reclaiming their temple from the Greek-Syrians and Hanukkah lasts for eight nights, to commemorate how long the holy light burned. Every night A Menorah is lit with nine candles. Four on either side and a candle in the center intended to light all the others this is the shamash, It used to be a tradition for people to give money to one another for Hanukkah. But as Christmas became more popular, more and more Jewish people began giving gifts instead,people fry their food in oil for Hanukkah as a symbol for the miracle oil that burned for eight nights straight,Hanukkah is not the most important Jewish holiday Jewish holidays like Passover and Rosh Hashanah are much more significant ,The famous dreidel, or four-sided spinning top, was invented as a distraction This was because the Greek-Syrians had outlawed Jewish studies, so the Jews spun dreidels to pretend they were merely playing games while they engaged with their scripture.
