English (Writing) – Friday 12th February

Today, we will be writing of our very own review of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

You will be using the ideas from yesterday and you will need your planning sheet or notes to help you.

Below is the information from yesterday about what a review is and what it should include.

You should write in full sentences, use a range of punctuation and make sure that what you write makes sense to the reader.

For this task, you should be able to write at least 100 words.

Here is an example of a review of a film:

Yesterday’s information

A review is when we say how we felt about something like a book, film or play.

A review is like someone has asked us our opinion of it and we are telling them what we think.

Here is a structure for writing a review. Today, you will use it to PLAN your ideas. We will write the review tomorrow.

You can use the sheet underneath to help you plan and record your thoughts. (this does not need to be printed – you can just use the headings for each paragraph).

  1. Start with a few sentences describing what the book is about
  • But don’t give any spoilers or reveal plot twists!
  • Usually, try to avoid writing in detail about anything that happens from about the middle of the book onwards.
  1. Discuss what you particularly liked about the book

Focus on your thoughts and feelings about the story. You should write about:

  • Who was your favourite character, and why?
  • What was your favourite part of the story, and why?
  • Which were the best scenes?
  • Did the story make you laugh or cry? Why?
  • Did the story grip you and keep you wanting to know more?
  1. Mention anything you disliked about the book

Talk about why you think it didn’t work for you. For example:

  • Would you have preferred a different ending?
  • Did you find it difficult to like any of the characters?
  • Did you like the theme of the book?
  1. Round up your review

Summarise some of your thoughts on the book by suggesting the type of reader you’d recommend the book to. For example: younger readers, older readers, fans of relationship drama/mystery stories/comedy.

Would you compare it to anything else you’ve read.

  1. You can give the book a rating, for example a mark out of five or ten, if you like!
  • Here is the planning sheet to help you organise your thoughts and ideas:

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – review of the book

Welcome to the adventure, which is unique, funny and magical. Here it is! A Midsummer’ Night’s Dream book, one word to describe it…. AMAZING!

The story is about four lovers and the problems they came across. All scenes are set in beautiful Athens and the surrounding forest. There is some magic involved and some fantastic creatures like fairies, or a human with a donkey’s head and the funniest of them all was for me personally Puck, one of the fairies.

The main issue in the story was, that one of the Athenian girls’ father didn’t agree to her wedding with Lysander, who she truly loved. Her father already chose a future husband for his daughter. Things got even more complicated when the love potion was used. Young Athenians got confused and were not sure, who they loved anymore. Even the Queen of the fairies fell in love with a weird, donkey looking creature. How unique is THAT!

What I liked the most about the book was the scene with the actors, called Mechanicals, meeting and discussing the play for the Theseus’s wedding. It was very humoristic and exciting part and a lot of ROARING involved!.
My favourite character was Puck, as he was cheeky , funny and sly, but made everyone laugh.
The story made me laugh sometimes, especially when it was mainly about Puck and Donkey’s head.
The story grip me and I wanted to find out, what will happen in the end.
I’m satisfied with how the story finished, as the ending was very happy and resulted in three weddings.
The theme of the book wasn’t something I would normally read, as I don’t like romantic stories in particular that much, but luckily there were some humoristic scenes and the plot was exciting.

I would recommend the book to my friends, as it’s classic and written in a specific way. The story is very interesting overall and has got elements of humour, comedy and drama. Something for everyone!
I think I would rate it 8/10, as it was a fun, enjoyable story.

Midsummer’s night dream is about 4 lovers, the mechanicals, the Duke of Athens, the King and Queen of the fairies and a mischievous fairy called Puck. It’s a story about love, fighting and magic in Athens and a forest.
My favourite character is Bottom because he was pretty funny in the play and I like that the fairy, Puck plays tricks. My favourite scene is when Bottom’s head gets turned into a donkeys head. There are parts of the play that are not nice because people fight but it all works out nicely in the end. Some of the story is funny, which made me laugh, but some parts are serious at times which made me think about how they lived in Athens. The story makes you want to carry on, to see how it ends.

Its all about four adults who each love one or another in this group of friends two of which who run away into forest and the use of magic to help them all be happy.
I liked the use of words/speech and how the story flowed nicely.
However I didn’t like the scenes as much and there’s not much emotions shown really.
I would say this book is more for the older readers and the fans of romance and drama.
so out of ten I would give this book a 7

A fantastic, pleasing and interesting story of a Mid-Summer nights dream. So it is very… Amazing story!
It starts with when Hermia wants to marry Lysander but Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrious. So the two lovers plan to escape where it ends as that Helena thought and told Demetrious the secret. Helena was in love with Demetrious but he didn’t love Helena.

In the forest was Oberon and Titania who had a fight against a changeling and a fairy. But he already has Puck. Well, the lovers came across Oberon but Oberon was camouflaged. Then he wanted the love juice on Titania and on Demetrious by telling Puck. As Oberon done Titania, she felt in love with some half donkey-half human person that was changed by Puck. Well Puck… he put it on the wrong person…so? After Oberon said to fix all of this mess!

And it was fixed and had a good ending.

The creators should be proud for all of their creativity and their wonderful script/speech.
I say 96% good and 4% would be interesting if changed, but thanks to the amazing story to the creators!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a book made by Shakespeare. It is about four people called Demetrius, Helena, Lysander and Hermia. Two girls, two boys. A fairy called Puck puts a potion on Lysander and he falls in love with Helena (which is bad) and Puck puts the same potion on Demetrius and he falls in love with Helena (which is good). Hermiawakes and see’s her boy friend with her best friend. Everyhting later goes back to normal with an uncommon happy ending.
    Rating: 7/10
I liked the part where it just went into confusion but I disliked that it ended happily as for Shakespeare, I expected to get a tragedy.
I recommend this book for younger then 10 and adults from 35

Well done Franek. You could possibly expand on the confusion a little but overall this is a good job.

Welcome to athens, A midsummer nights dream is about 4 lovers who all get confused about who to love. The main cause is about someone’s farther. There are dukes, a king and queen, fairies, a farther and the 4 lovers. I would describe it… Amazing.

My favourite character was Puck who causes mischeif everywhere he goes. To be honest my favourite part was in the woods when most of the play happens. The best scenes are obviously in the woods as lots of interesting things happen. I think the story altogether ended up with me laughing. The story did grip me as I really wanted to know what happens next.

I would want a different ending as it could have been more detail about it. It was difficult for me to like Theseus and Egeus, as they are only at the begining and the end. Though I do really like the theme of the book

I would recommend it to my family as it is full of drama and comedy with a tiny bit of humour. I would give it 9/10.
