English (Grammar) – Thursday 4th February

The focus of this session is using commas.

You must use a comma to:

  • separate names, adjectives or items in a list.

For example: Sarah invited Emma, Donna, Hannah and Paula to the party.

  • separate extra information from the rest of the sentence.

For example: Eva’s teacher, Mrs Smith, was really kind and helpful.

  • separate subordinate clauses from a main clause.

For example: Even though they had cleaned the classroom, there was still a lot to do.

Challenge 1

Rewrite each sentence, adding two commas for extra information to each one.

  1. My teacher Mr Green used to live in France.
  2. The trumpet which is made of metal is a woodwind instrument.
  3. The dog which is brown ran across the park chasing a cat.
  4. My best friend called Keira lives in Scotland.

Challenge 2

Add commas to the sentences below to make the meaning clear. Hint: It may be one or two commas!

  1. Running as fast as she could Kim raced her sister to the end of he road.
  2. Michelle wearing a blue dress went out to the party.
  3. Sophie a mother of two booked a holiday to Disney World in Florida.
  4. On Monday at 9 o’clock in the morning we have an assembly.
  5. The tree blowing wildly in the wind lost a branch.
  6. Before I fell asleep I realised just how much I was dreading the next day.

Challenge 3

Which sentences use commas correctly? Correct the sentences where commas have been used incorrectly.

  1. Whenever, she went out, it was fantastic.
  2. Although he found he ball, he didn’t ell anyone.
  3. Midnight, my black cat likes catching mice.
  4. Mrs Black, our head teacher, takes assemblies.
  5. Ameera and Kieran, my best friends, can run very fast.

      Hello Owen

Section 1 – each sentence needs 2 commas.
Section 2 – all ok but number 6 only needs one comma.
Section 3 – 2, 4 and 5 were correct as they were. For 1 you have removed the wrong comma. You have corrected 3 in the right way.

Very impressive Alex! You are spot on with everything here.

Could you write your own sentences showing each of the different uses of commas?
