Year 5- Wednesday 13th January

Good morning my lovelies.  How are you all?

Parina told me she has been doing some baking at home.  Has anyone else tried something new?

Science video-  have you seen this gas which is heavier than air?   I thought you might like it after our work in Science last week and yesterday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u19QfJWI1oQ

Morning activity

Maths-  1 hour 15 minutes

We have spent 2 days multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers and I’m really proud of how well you have all understood the idea.  I just want to have a final day practising this to make sure everyone is as confident as they should be.

Here is a guide to remind you how what we should be doing.

Now have a go!   I will put the answers to the first 2 of each level on at lunchtime so you can check how you are doing.

So sorry!  Alex was correct this is the same one you had yesterday.

Here is the correct one.  So pick whichever you haven’t already done!

Challenge 1- have a go at these missing number problems

Challenge 2- have a go at this task using multiplication tables

https://nrich.maths.org/1134

English- 1 hour 30 minutes

Task 1

Reread Egeus speech and watch the video clip again

It is really good to watch Shakespeare being performed.  Normally we would have acted out this speech ourselves in different ways, in the classroom, but you can get a good idea of what is happening by watching this clip. .

egeus speech

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dImmByCpzRI

Task 2

Summarising is the skill of taking a lot of writing in someone else’s words and explaining it clearly and concisely (briefly) in your own words.  So we’re going to have another go at this today.

In 6 points or less,  can you tell me what Egeus is saying- in your own words.  I’ll start you off…

  •  Egeus is angry with Hermia

Task 3- at least 100 words for today’s paragrapah

Last week we started writing the beginning of the story for ourselves, by describing Athens.     Can you take your summary from above,  and use it to help you tell the next part of the story.   Our reported speech work from yesterday will help aswell.   Don’t forget your punctuation!

Here is my beginning from last week, and the start of my next part.

If you want to restart from the beginning that’s absolutely fine.   We will be adding at least a paragraph to our story each week,  so keep it somewhere safe!!!

The curtain rises on Athens,  a white and golden city, bright and joyous as a wedding cake.  Everywhere there is celebration for the marriage of Duke Theseus to Hipployta, the Queen he has won in battle.  Their happiness spread through the whole of the city.  People had decorated their houses with flowers and left lamps burning in their windows at night,  so that the streets twinkled like a city of stars.  Everyone seemed joyful and excited as they prepared to celebrate.  But in the midst of this happiness , there was a speck of misery, like a sour plum…

A few days before the much awaited wetting, Egeus  (a well respected citizen of Athens) bought his daughter, Hermia, to the court of Duke Theseus.   Grabbing her by the arm Egeus dragged her in front of all the noble guests gathered there.   He explained that he was angry with her because

Task 4- challenge-  if you want to!

Have a go at performing Egeus’ speech yourself,  record the best version and email to me at yearfive@lingsprimary.org.uk.   I might add some of them to the blog for everyone to see!

History- 1 hour

Last week we discovered the causes of The Great War,  (as people called it at the time).  This week we’re going to find out a bit more about some of the events and their chronology (time)

wednesday history

Your final task is to create a time line of the events in WW1.  You can show me this in writing, or be a bit more creative-  factfile,  diagram,  model,  act it out,  model etc.

P.E.

Mr Bushell has put this in a separate link.

TTRS Challenge

There is a TTRS challenge between Tull and Pankhurst classes until Friday… who will win?

That’s ok, I just went over the blog and corrected a couple of mistakes from yesterday. If you check back on yesterday’s blog you will see the feedback I set you about changing pronouns when we move from direct to indirect speech.

      Hi Rihanna,
These answers are all too small. If we’re looking at 87 x 73 for the first question, we need
      3 x 7= 21
      3 x 80= 240
      70 x 7= 490
      and 70 x 80= 5600.
Then we need to add them all up together.
I’ll email you a video link to watch that might help.

In Athens, Theseus court, was beautiful mainly because there was a wedding for duke Theseus and Hipployta. There was lights, so many lights as if you were gazing into the galaxy. A few days after the wedding Egeus (a well deferential citizen) pulling her daughter Hermia by the arm to the duke Theseus, to tell him he was angry at her because she wouldn’t marry Demetrius who Egeus wants her to marry but Hermia wants to marry Lysander. So then Egeus would threaten her by saying he will kill her if she doesn’t marry Demetrius so if she marries Lysander she will die.

    Egeus is angry with Hermia.
    Egeus is annoyed with Lysander.
He wants Demetrius to marry Hermia because he likes him.
He thinks Lysander is tricking Hermia.
Hermia will die if she does not listen to Egeus, her father.

Egeus didn’t trust Lysander but he does know Demetrius as a good man more than Lysander, that’s what he thinks. The reason why Egeus hates Lysander is because he tried to trick Hermia by sending her love token and sweet messages. This makes Egeus angry because he has already chosen Demetrius to marry Hermia and if Hermia doesn’t marry Demetrius, she will die. Egeus asked the Duke to help him with Hermia, Demetrius and Lysander and to tell Hermia the consequences of what will happen if she doesn’t follow the law.

Your writing is great, just take care with your tenses. Some of it is present- he thinks, hates, and some of it is past- Egeus asked, explained. Try to keep it all the same. Can you edit it for me?

    • He (Egeus) wants it to happen by the honour of Athens.
    • Or it can be fatal according to the ancient rules of Athens.

    Story-

As few days’ past…Egeus rushed into the court like a bowling ball moving rapidly. As he came in, Duke, Theseus looked and noticed Egeus rushing in with his daughter.

As Egeus entered the room, he took a deep breath and then started talking quickly saying,
“It will be sufficient to make me angry against any circumstances that is not right for my daughter,
Stand forth-Demetrius who is acceptable for my daughter.
Lysander, this person has delighted Hermia by his tricks,
He has stolen Hermia’s heart from Demetrius to be in love, Now the love has to regain its strength.
But my lord, this love can’t break and I give entrance for the love of Hermia to Demetrius. If this love won’t accept, the harshness of death will follow on to her to die. What do you say my lord?”

The Duke, Theseus looked into the sadness of Hermia and then gave the idea of love to him. His decision is done!

Story. I love the simile. You’ve used a lot of speech, which I get, because we’re writing about a speech. But I did really want you to use some reported speech for at least part of the speech. Can you edit it and change part of it to reported speech for me. It will help your writing to flow.

Athens woke to the rays of the beaming Sun. But in court the Duke has already started work, a beatuiful girl of the name Hermia and her father, Egeus were quariling. Hermia chose not to marry the man of his choice, Demetrius. Hermia’s friend Helena was in love with Demetrius but he loved her back no more, but loved Hermia but she is in love with Lysander and he loves her back. Egeus though, he hated him! “Thou, thou man has bewithch’d my daughter, swapped love tokens with her and she has been fooled by this man!” Explained he to Theseus the Duke.

      Good effort at the summary.
This is a great paragraph for the opening- describing the scene. But that’s what we did last week. This week’s paragraph should be telling the reader about Egeus’s speech.

    English:
    1. Egeus’s complaint against his daughter Hermia.
    2. Demetrius has Egeus’s consent to marry Hermia.
    3. Lysander caused Hermia’s disobedience.
    4. Lysander stole Hermia’s heart away.
    5. Egeus’s begging the ancient privilege of Athens.

The story starts in a joyful, excited city called Athens. That is a city which is golden and white
and people enjoy it here ”mostly” .
People had decorated their houses with flowers and left lamps burning in their windows at night, so that the streets twinkled like a city of stars, for special weddings . But in the midst of this happiness, there is a tiny TINY speck of misery, like a sour plum. Athens is a decent sized city.( which means a BIG!
BIG! city.) Recently in Athens one crazy thing happen which was one woman(called Hermia) is in love with someone his dad hates and Hermia’s dad wants Hermia to marry a different person so he has no option but to kill Hermia.

I love the beginning, but I think you could give me a bit more detail in the second paragraph. You haven’t even mentioned Lysander or Demetrius or most importantly Egeus!

Recently in Athens one crazy thing happened, which was one woman(called Hermia) is in love with someone his dad Egeus hates and Hermia’s dad wants her to marry a different person so he has no option but to kill Hermia or let her to marry Demetrius. Egeus starts his speech on Theseus’s court passionately. He explains that Lysander cunningly tricked Hermia into falling in love with him. How embarrassing it must have been for her to be told off in front of so many people. Her life now in danger, as if she refuses to marry Demetrius, she can be killed with her dad’s consent. How cruel that would be. Not very caring father, is he?

As the curtain rises, the city of Athens is full of joy. There is a wedding between Duke Theseus
and Hipployta. There is also a giant wedding cake. People decorated their windows with flowers and sweet sents of candles. The street even the entire city dazzled like stars exept for one house. There was a speck of misery and it can spread like wildfire. It was like a sour plum spreading its sourness. A few days before the wedding Egeus brought her daughter to the court Egeus was very angry.

That’s a great start Owen, but can you keep going to the end of Egeus speech. What does he say? How does everyone react?

    English task 3

The curtain rises in Athens, a good sandy city. There is happiness throughout the city for the marriage of Duke Theseus and Hipployta. People had decorated there houses with lights that filled the night sky like they were stars.
A few days before the much awaited
wedding, Egeus (a well respected citizen of Athens) bought his daughter, Hermia, to the court of Duke Theseus. Grabbing her by the arm Egeus dragged her in front of all the noble guests gathered there. He explained that Lysander has bewitched his daughter by giving her gifts.
Hermia makes it clear she she is in love with Lysander.
Therefore Egeus tells Hermia she has 4 days to choose between love and death.
