Year 5- Tuesday 12th January
Good morning everyone!
Maths- 1 hour 15 minutes
We are continuing with our work on multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.
Watch the second part of the lesson
and continue with the worksheet from wherever you got yesterday.
For those of you who completed the worksheet yesterday, here is some more practise.
Extension
And there are 2 challenges today
English- 1 hour 30 minutes
Task 1
Reread Egeus’ speech from yesterday.
You can rewatch any of the video clips from yesterday’s lesson that you want if it’s helpful. Here are a couple of different ones.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK42Nmzua1I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcCM5bFj0Jo&t=17s
Task 2
Can you summarise Egeus speech in 5 points.
What are the 5 most important things he says in the speech?
Remember summaries don’t have to be in full sentences, they can be bullet pointed and in note form.
Task 3
Last term we found out about how to write direct speech (using inverted commas to record the actual words that a person is saying) but we found out that although it can be useful sometimes for showing exactly what someone is saying, and how they are feeling- too much speech can also slow the story down and stop it from flowing well. So today we’re going to find out about reported or indirect speech. Work through the powerpoint below.
Task 4
Now try the worksheet
Challenge
Lysander has bewitched the bosom of my child, Hermia.
This is part of Egeus’ speech. Can you put this into a sentence using direct speech? Can you do it using reported speech?
Science- 1 and a half hours.
We have a zoom for Science at 2.00.to start the lesson off. We will be continuing with our work on materials. If would be helpful if you could gather some materials ready for you to test in the independent part of the lesson, which will be after we have finished the zoom call.
Some ideas of things that might be good to test. You won’t need all of these, a small selection is absolutely fine! – picture frame, a metal spoon, a straw, a wooden ice lolly stick, a pencil, sweet wrappers (for example quality streets), a Tupperware box or lid, bubble wrap, cling film, tin foil, paper, tracing/ baking paper, chopping board, a glass, a mug, plastic beaker, paper clips, fizzy drink can, crisp packet, scissors, a coin, plastic bottle, a torch (one on the back of a phone will be fine)
We will be looking at magnetism for part of the lesson, so if you have a magnet handy that would be useful, but not essential, so don’t panic if you don’t have one!
Spellings- 30 minutes
Here is the year 5/ 6 spelling list. During the test in year 6, they don’t actually test you on the words on this list. But on related words. That’s why we do lots of work on word building with prefixes and suffixes.
Today we are going to focus on the double m words.
accommodate
committee
communicate
community
immediate
programme
recommend
Task 1 find out what each word means
Task 2 put each word into a sentence
Task 3
Using the prefixes-
in, un, de, dis, re, post, ex, pre
And the suffixes
ing, ly, ed, ous, al, age, ness, men, ship, ate, ful, s
Can you build some related words?
I need a link for the afternoon class please I cant find the email for it.
Hi Saheera, I’ve just sent it to your school email address.
Morning maths

I have seen a pattern so its like the 10s are giving the 1s there number.
I wonder if you can put a x in the middle and still me the same answer
Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Great work Jayden. Can you just check number 3 for me. It looks a bit small. If you estimate to check, 90 x 50 would be 4500, so your answer seems a little small.
It is working
Ok, that’s brilliant!
Hi Mrs Leeming,
Michael can’t seem to see his work marked and he puts in an effort every morning to get his work done. He sees his peers works marked and commended but his work is never there.
Is this because you can’t see his work please I need a response. Thank you.
Hiya, I have explained to Michael that when he types an answer into the blog it gets sent to a folder where it will stay until an adult approves it and/or replies. After that happens he will be able to see his work. But he will need to come back on the blog and check for our replies. I have marked Michael’s work every time he has sent it, but he has not been checking back for feedback and/or corrections.
