English – Non chronological reports

Today, we have looked at a non-chronological report and the part played in them by nouns and pronouns. The first few slides below are a reminder of what nouns and pronouns are. We are not worrying yet about the different types of noun – that will come later. We are then looking for the use of these words in a non-chronological report about Tutankhamun which is shown in sections later in the slides. Your task is to find as many nouns and pronouns as possible from this text. You should be able to find a lot because these words are vital to this style and genre of writing.

The pronouns are important because they give each section something called cohesion. Cohesion is when a text flows from start to finish and is easy to read and understand.

The task after this is to look at the non-chronological report about sharks in which nouns have been overused and pronouns underused, resulting in a text that is quite repetitive and doesn’t flow as much as it should. Can you edit the text by including more pronouns instead of the nouns to give it more cohesion? You may also be able to include noun phrases or synonyms to replace the overused nouns (you will need to look these up if you can’t remember what they are!).

Good luck!
