Real Leaders Training- Week 3

This week our young leaders focused on the personal leadership skill of confidence. Throughout the session the leaders had to self-reflect on their our levels of confidence and discuss when they feel most confident and what makes them lose their confidence.

Activity 1- What is confidence? 

In this activity the leaders discussed what the word confidence actually means and as a group they came up with the following ideas:

  • It is when you are happy to do something on your own’
  • It is when you are willing to try something’
  • ‘It is when you are comfortable doing something’

After collecting all of the ideas we came up with an overall definition of the word to be used in our leadership discussion which is:

Confidence is when you feel comfortable in your own abilities to attempt something new or different.’

Activity 2- Comfort, Stretch and Panic

To start this activity the leaders watched three different videos of people talking in front of a camera about PE and School Sport. The first one was of Mr Wolmarans during the first Real PE promotional video. The leaders recognised he was very confident in front of the camera and come across as calm and composed in all areas. The second video was Mrs Davies during another Real PE promotional video. The leaders recognised Mrs Davies was very nerves in front of the camera with some of her action, however demonstrated confidence through her spoken words. The final video was of Mr Davies during one of his online golf coaching videos. The leaders recognised Mr Davies was confident when it came to the physical actions and looking towards the camera, however struggled with some of the verbal explanations. This demonstrated that three different leaders can demonstrate different levels of confidence. This led on to the activity ‘Comfort, Stretch and Panic’ as we saw Mr Wolmarans in Comfort, Mr Davies in Stretch and Mrs Davies in Panic.’ The key in the activity is to demonstrate that it is ok in different areas and we can learn to move across the zones.

We then gave the leaders a couple of scenarios and they then had to place themselves on the curve to show how they would feel in that situation. The scenarios were:

  • You will be standing in front of a class of 30 and have to lead that class through a lesson on your own
  • You will be standing in front of a class of 30 and have to lead that class through a lesson with a partner
  • You are required to organise the resources for a lesson 

   

Activity 3- Beanbag Raid

In this activity the leaders got into four small groups, assigning themselves roles and responsibilities for when they lead the rest of the group. Mr Davies started the groups off with a demonstration of a poor leader as he:

  • Stayed in one stop
  • Talking into the game planning book
  • Didn’t use a demonstration
  • Didn’t use praise

Then each leadership group took turns leading different parts of the game Beanbag raid. The leaders did really well demonstrating some key skills and qualities throughout their time. After all of the group had led their section Mr Davies then demonstrated what a good leader looks like, while Mrs Davies kept pausing the lesson to discuss what Mr Davies was doing. Some of the key elements highlighted by Mrs Davies were:

  • Constant use of praise
  • Constant movement within the group area
  • Using the participants to demonstrate the activity
  • Using questions to get the participants to reinforce their understanding
  • Constant encouragement as well as encouraging the entire group to motivate their own teammates
  • Constant use of hand gestures

Session Review Questions

  • Can you give an example, during leading, when you might be in comfort, stretch and panic.
  • From tonight’s session what do you have to work on to be confident leader?

    I can be stretch when I’m leading with a partner.
    I can be comfort by leading a class on my own.
    I am in panic with a group causing a situation and need to be more encouraged.

    I believe to be confident to improve is when my team is encouraged so situations will not be made.

      I can be stretch when I’m with a partner. I can feel comfort when I’m with a group. I can feel panic if something went wrong or I don’t know what to do. I need to speak more and demonstrate to make me more confident.

        1. The word confidence is when you are feeling in your safe zomlne and you are not scared.
        2.When we were up leading I felt cross between stretch and comfort.
        3.When we was in charge it was fun and when we were playing I bet it was fun for the others.
        ) I can give an example if I am in any zone.
        ) I have learned that you should always be confident.

    Stretch: Leading a group.
    Comfort: Leading sporting activities (NOT dancing though).
    Panic: Leading dance activities.

    I would need to improve leading with partners.

    improve on my confidence so i cam speak out loud

    Stretch: Leading a group by myself.
    Comfort: Leading a group with another pupil.
    Panic: Leading group of silly people by myself.

    Being more clear to other pupil speaking louder and giving more instructions.

    You might be comfort when your group is with you because they can help you feel more confident,you might feel stretch when one person is with you because of your not confident they might not feel confident as well but they will give you company,you might feel panic because you have no idea of what to do, for example don’t no where to put the equipment so you might get it wrong.I need to work on speaking more and demonstrating so I can be more confident because of you speak more it shows your more confident.

    stretch: leading a group on my own but i know what to do.
    panic: leading a group which is naughty and not listening

    Comfort: Leading a football team.
    Stretch: words for to lead i need to talk with apropiate launguage that are understanderble.
    to be confident i need to be atleast listened and have the chance to.

    I will be in strech when if another person is helping me teach .
    I will be panic if I am teaching by my self.
    I will be in comfort if I am teaching with a group of friends .

    I will stop talking and instead I will do actions so I do not need to use my voice .

    I feel panic when i get something wrong and feel embarrased
    I feel stretch when it is challenging to ask peoples questions that i dont know the answer to
    I feel comfort when i am confident and i know the task to do
    As a leader, I need to work onmovement when im leading

    Comfort: Planning a game.
    Stretch: Introducing a game.
    Panic: Being the one to blame if the game goes wrong and/or doesnt work.
    2: I have to work on my explanation and demonstration skills.

    Comfort: Assisting an explanation using demonstrations, but with another person leading the explanation.
    Stretch: Leading the explanation.
    Panic: Planning the entirety of the explanation, AND leading the explanation at the same time.

    I have to work on my confidence in explanation to a large group of people.
