Thursday 25th June – Year 5

Good morning Pankhurst Class – how are we all today?

Here are your tasks for today:

Punctuation

We looked at punctuation yesterday but I think that we could do with a bit more practise. Correct the following passage, adding the accurate punctuation. Don’t forget any inverted commas!

English

Today we will be following on from yesterday’s work – I hope you kept your notes from yesterday as I asked!

I’d like you to write an argument, persuading me why your chosen crew member was responsible for the loss of life in the disaster. Was it Bruce Ismay, Captain Smith, Officer Murdoch, Captain Lord or Frederick Fleet?

Remember to use their statements to guide your opinion. I am expecting more than just 2 sentences!

I’d also like you to include reasons why you think that the other people weren’t responsible – focus on at least 2 of them.

Here are the resources again that I attached yesterday:

Titanic PowerPoint2

Maths

Many of you are telling me that you are really enjoying this week’s work on translation so we’ll continue today. Look at the following lesson where you will describe position after translation. You’ll also be extending your knowledge today as you work in four quadrants instead of just one. Here goes!

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/describe-position-after-translation

As usual, let me know what you think and at least 2 things that you have learnt.

Now try the following 4 challenges:

Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Challenge 3

Challenge 4

Art

We have spent time this week looking the condition of passengers in first, second and third class on the Titanic and what the different conditions were like.

I’d like you to choose your favourite room on board (remember that the powerpoint above has lots of pictures) and create your own version of that room. You can choose whether to colour it in or paint it. How about using a shoe box (or something similar) to create a 3-D model of your drawing??

Enjoy you learning today.

I think that not one person was the most responsible because everyone had a part to play .The look out should of made sure that he had his binoculars on him before they left Southampton. The manager helped make the boat so he should of made sure there was enough life boats also when they designed the ship the phone for the look out should have been next to him if there is an emergency he should not have had to run to the bridge to warn them of an emergency. The captain needed to make sure the water clear and smooth and go at the right speed because of the ice ,the captain has the final decision of the speed of the ship so he shouldn’t of listened to the manager .The captain of the other ship could of saved some lives because he saw the flawe and he could of turned on his radio and responded to the emergency .😭🥺😰😢

      Hi Evie,

I like your thinking – it’s hard to apportion blame to just one person.
You have obviously read lots of the information as you clearly state why each person could have been responsible – well done.

”Felicity will you look at this way ” exampled Mrs Appleton
”you have been fidgeting all morning ” Felicity tore her an eye reluctantly away from the coin she was holding in her hand and then tried to concentrate in class Teacher who was talking about maths – something to do with multiplication.
Felicity vaguely recalled she caught Matt’s eye as they grinned excitedly at each other. This is it the two best friends have been waiting for what has seemed an enternity. Both of them had been looking at the clock every five minutes both willing the hands will move faster s that they can be picked up by Felicity’s parents at lunch time.

      Well done Sadia,

Does the first line need a full stop at the end? Also, what should come after ‘way’ in that first line?

I think captain Smith was responsible for the shipwreck because he was the one that was searing the boat. So he might have done it purposely so that everyone died . Also it could have been captain lord because he could have done something to the boat so that there was no boat that was near his boat.

      Thanks Sadia,

Was he searing the boat or steering?
Why would he have done this on purpose?

      Thanks Cryan,

If the co-ordinate (3,6) was moved 3 spaces to the left, what would the new co-ordinate be? Remember that it needs to be two numbers, separated by a comma.

Good morning Mrs Millard, i’m good thanks, How are you?

    ENGLISH

I think that there are many people who should be held responsible for the sinking of Titanic. Firstly I think Captain Smith is mainly responsible for the tragedy, because the ship was going too fast. Also he was warned about ice in the area and did not listen. Was it Captain Smith that told the radio operator, to tell the S.S Californian to stop messaging, as they had too many relatives of the passengers to answer ?Chief Officer Murdoch could have been to blame, as he told the engine room to reverse to slow down, if they were still going quickly they may have been able to turn in time to avoid the iceberg. Bruce Ismay is also partly to blame as there were not enough lifeboats even though the legal requirement was met. Was he right to get on a boat when there were not enough? I feel as though Frederick Fleet was blamed through no fault of his own, he had no binoculars as someone had locked them away and no one knew where the key was.

      Hi Lydia,

I’m fine thanks – a bit hot and bothered, but fine!

I like your thinking that maybe just one person shouldn’t be solely responsible.

You have obviously read a lot of the information that I gave you as you included lots of it in your argument – well done.

    yesterday Titanic work

The Titanic ws 882 ft long and 92 feet 6 inches wide .
The facilities were heated swimming pool, gym , squash court, library and reading room ,hairdresser, steam room and spa.
On the menu was grilled mutton chops, mashed, fried or baked potato. Custard pudding , apple meringue and a choice off the buffet.
There were 2229 people on the Titanic altogether.
The lookout did not see the iceberg , as his binoculars were locked in a cupboard and no one knew where the key was.
    There were 16 lifeboats .
There were 1250 people reported to have died by the New York Times.
    1516 people died.

      Hi Dhanshri,

On Challenge 1 – which co-ordinate relates to which point? You’ve gone wrong somewhere but without this it’s hard to see where.

Challenge 2 – the second one is great but check the first one.

      Challenge 3 – brilliant!

Double check Challenge 4 – you might find it more helpful to draw it roughly on paper. I always do!

    Hello here’s my English

I think captain Smith was the reason that lives were lost because he was the person stirring the ship and he should know everything about stirring and shouldn’t of led the passengers in a risk of death. People say he was the one leading the ship and driving it in ice. He was in charge of everything and he was guilty of shooting a missle at captain Lords ship.
