Monday 18th May – Year 6

Reading:

Have a look at today’s vocabulary.

Ichor – fluid that flows like blood through the veins of Gods.

Pulp – a soft, wet, shapeless mass of material.

Entranced – holding someone’s attention with wonder and delight.

Incredulous – unwilling to believe something.

Furtive – attempting to avoid notice or attention.

Now have a read of the text.

‘I thought she was meant to be one of the more human-looking ones?’ said the merchant.

‘She was,’ said Hark.

Now she was godware, and godware meant opportunities. The investors would have their cargo jealously guarded as it was hauled up by cranes and dragged to the waiting warehouse. They wouldn’t relax until every last ounce had been carved up, weighed, scraped, sold, or boiled for glue. In the meanwhile, hundreds of other eyes were watching for chances. A shard of shell, a smear of ichor, a spoonful of pulp could sell for more than a month’s wages. When he was younger, Hark might have been one of those squeezed among the crowds, hoping to snatch at some tiny dropped fragment . . .

Now he was older and wiser, he knew that there were ways to make money from the Hidden Lady without braving the harpoons. He threw a brief, assessing glance at the merchant, who was still watching through his spyglass, entranced.

‘The menders are lucky folks,’ he lied conversationally. ‘The ones who clean out and fix the big nets afterwards. It’s a difficult job, because of the thick cables, but one of my friends does it. He says he always finds a bit of godware or two caught in the net. He’s allowed to keep them as payment.’

‘Really?’ The merchant lowered his spyglass and stared at Hark. He looked incredulous, but not incredulous enough. Hark had chosen well.

‘It’s not quite as good as it sounds.’ Hark shrugged ruefully. ‘He has to sell it at the Appraisal auction, which means the governor’s taxman gets a big cut.’

He looked away, as if losing interest in the subject. He had left a baited hook trailing in the merchant’s mind. Oh, come on and bite, you fat fish . . .

‘Do all sales have to go through the Appraisal?’ The merchant hesitated, and cleared his throat. ‘Does your friend ever sell his little bits of godware . . . privately?’

Hark let himself look surprised, then thoughtful. He gave a furtive glance around, then leaned towards the merchant.

‘Well, the law says all sales should go through the Appraisal. If anybody ever found out about a “private sale” there would be trouble . . . but . . . do you want me to talk to my friend?’

‘If you wouldn’t mind,’ said the merchant, his eyes bright.

Got you.

Hark knew people who could make him what he needed. A piece of lobster shell, coated in glass to make it look special, with some blackened limpets glued on. The merchant would probably be three islands further along his journey before he suspected his souvenir wasn’t godware. And would he want to believe it even then? Why not hold the faith, so that he could tell his friends: You see this? It’s part of the Hidden Lady. I was there when they dragged it up from the deep. Why give up a perfectly good story?

Try to answer these questions:

  • What do you think is meant by the word ‘godware’?
  • What happens to the remains of the Gods? How do you know?
  • What do you think about what is happening to the Gods? Why?
  • How do you know that Hark has been collecting pieces of the Gods all of his life?
  • Is Hark an honest person? How do you know?
  • What is the relationship between the merchant and Hark? Use evidence to support your answer.
  • How is Hark going to deceive the merchant?
  • What do you think will happen next? Why?

Extra task:

Have you read any books that are similar to Deeplight? What were they called? Why were they similar?

Maths:

This week, we are going to be recapping and extending our knowledge on units of measure and everything that comes with that i.e. perimeter, area and volume.

Firstly, have a think and see if you can remember the different units of measure that we have looked at before and what they are used to message.

Today, we will focus on units of measure. We will look at what they are used for and how we convert them.

I’ve also added some challenges of looking at other units of measure i.e how you convert cm in inches and stones into pounds.

Here is a helpful poster that you might want to keep looking back at:

Work through each slide one at a time, reading the information and answering the questions. It might take a little while and you can come back to it later or on another day if you want to, but don’t rush it. If you take your time you will understand it.

Converting units of measure

History:

Now that you have collected all of your research, I won’t you to present it all together. You could organise it into one of the following:

  • A presentation piece which includes art
  • A PowerPoint presentation
  • A non-chronological report
  • An information leaflet
  • An article for a historical magazine
  • Another style of your choice

The decision is yours but make it colourful, informative and makes sure your punctuation and spelling is correct!

Please send me them through e-mail and I can upload them to the blog so everyone can see your hard work.

Extra Tasks:

Mindfulness May challenge:

Share an inspiring quote with someone to give them a boost.

  • Find a quote or use one that you already know.
  • Write in on some paper and stick it in your window.
  • Send it to me and I will share it with your classmates.
  • Write it in a card and send it to someone.

Other tasks you could do today:

    English.
    1. I think that it means that she would have opportunities because in the text it says, “And god ware meant opportunities.”
    2. The thing that happens to the remains of the Gods are that they are carved up, weighed, scraped, sold or even boiled for glue.
    3. I think it is unfair and wrong because they should be remembered not sold for glue.
    4. I know that Hark has been taking pieces of the Gods because in the text it says, “Hark might have been one of those squeezed among the crowds.”
    5. I think Hark is not an honest person because he knows ways to make money away from the hidden lady and it is not right. Also, it says in the text it says, “He lied conversationally.”
    6. I think the relationship between Hark and the merchant is bad because Hark lied to the merchant that the menders are lucky people.
    7. Hark is going to deceive the merchant by selling him fake godware and making him pay a lot .
    8. I think that this is going to ruin their friendship all because of Hark.

    English:
    1. I think Godware means, something that a God used to wear (or there skin because everyone wears skin).
    2. The leftovers of the Gods are: carved, weighed, sold or even boiled for glue!
    3. I think it is wrong, because everyone would want to be remembered and not sold or boiled for GLUE!
    4. I know that Hark has been doing this for along time because he knows what to do.
    5. Hark is not a honest person, because he knows other ways to make money. He s also very evil in my opinion
6.I think the relationship between the merchant and hark is not good at all, because hark lied to him.
