Monday 18th May – Year 5

Good morning Year 5 – this should be the last week before half term but every week feels a bit strange now!

I hope that you and your families are well and keeping safe. Here are today’s tasks:

Discuss the following scenario with your family:

English

We are going to revise using inverted commas today. The following link should be a reminder if you need it:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/ztcp97h

Task One

Put the speech marks in the correct places. Don’t forget other punctuation that goes alongside inverted commas.

1. Quick! Pass the ball to me! Shouted Carla. No one is marking me.

2. Can I help you? Asked the policeman. You look a bit lost young lady.

3. Oh no! Don’t let Mr Cockcroft take the penalty! Shouted Nick.

4. I’ll meet you in town, said Tom. Just by the cake shop.

5. I’ve dropped my wallet, said Craig. It must be round here somewhere.

6. Look at this picture, said Mr Pitchford. It’s magnificent!

Task Two

Add inverted commas correctly to the following passage and remember new speaker, new line.

I’m afraid I have some bad news, Mrs Brown said to the children. Your father has had an accident. What’s the matter? Rob asked. Is it serious? Will he have to go to hospital? Pete asked. Will he have to have an operation? Debbie asked. Now don’t worry, Mrs Brown replied. It’s not as bad as all that. Someone crashed into his car but he hasn’t broken any bones. That’s a relief! Rob exclaimed. But I bet he’s a bit shaken up, said Debbie. He sounded fine on the phone, Mrs Brown said, but the car is badly damaged. A damaged car, said Pete, is better than a damaged Dad!

Maths

We began looking at angles last week and today we are going to be thinking about angles around a point.

Remind me from last week – how many degrees in a whole turn?

Look at the following video as an introduction:

The following link also has some example questions that you could try:

https://www.mathsisfun.com/angle360.html

Now try these examples yourself:

Extension – remember for these the rule from last week about angles on a straight line – this will help you!

Art

Below is a very famous painting by Van Gogh called ‘Sunflowers’.

The following link has some interesting facts:

Produce your own version of ‘Sunflowers’. You can use whatever media you choose.

Have fun!

        Thanks Evie,

1st sentence – should be a comma before Mrs Brown (the same for sentence 5).
2nd sentence – remember capital letters for proper nouns.
3rd – Do these sentences begin with a capital letter?

Accurate use of inverted commas though!

Sentence 1 – Is the first word spoken?
Sentence 3 – Are the first 2 words spoken?
Sentence 4 – Does Tom start speaking again at ‘just’?
Sentence 6 – Check if you’ve used capital letters accurately.

Hi Lydia – very thorough as usual!

      Good advice for the ICT.

Task one – very accurate use of inverted commas – well done. Very minor point but on the last 3 sentences, you need a comma before ‘said’ and not a full stop (when there is o other punctuation such as a question mark or exclamation mark).

Task Two – again, great use of inverted commas. Just the same suggestion as above.

      Hi Dhanshri,

Good use of inverted commas. On the first sentence – do you need extra inverted commas after the word ‘quick’? Same for the 3rd sentence – if the person continues speaking over more than one sentence there is no need for extra inverted commas.

      Good use of commas too!
