Monday 20th April – Year 5

Hello Year 5,

We hope that you have had a lovely Easter and didn’t eat too much chocolate!

Here are your tasks for today:

Maths – We want you to start thinking of properties of shapes and today want you to concentrate on 2-D shapes. ‘Properties’ of a shape means the qualities that it has – what makes it that shape.

The following is an example to get you started. Here are the properties of a square:

A square has:

  • 4 straight sides that are equal in length
  • 4 identical angles that are 90° (remember that this is a right angle)
  • 4 lines of symmetry
  • Opposite sides of the square are parallel
  • The diagonals are equal length

List the properties of the following 2-D shapes:

  • Rectangle
  • Circle
  • Parallelogram
  • Trapezium
  • Rhombus

When writing the properties, make sure that you understand and vocabulary that you use – don’t copy from the internet!

What do the term ‘polygon’, ‘regular’ and ‘quadrilateral’ mean?

Challenge – is a square a rectangle? Refer back to the properties of each shape and explain your reasoning.

English – Revise relative clauses – you could use this link:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zsrt4qt

Write 3 sentences that use different relative clauses.

ICT –

Discuss the following question with your family:

Now try this:

Art – Find out about Anthony Goldsworthy. Create your own art work in his style.

We are really missing you all.

From Mrs Millard, Mrs Leeming and Mrs Munro XX

    English,

Relative Clause- used to give more information about a noun.

    Eg.
I won’t stand next to the man who smells like he’s never washed. ( In this sentence the word who is a relative pronoun and gives you more information about the man)

      Thank you Simar.

Tell me more about the sides of a rectangle.

Parallelogram – check your comment about symmetry. Why do you think that it is called a
      parallelogram?

Any parallel sides in a trapezium?

What’s special about the sides of a rhombus?

    Good morning Mrs Millard,
this is my English for today,

what is a relative clause ; well a relative clause is something that adds extra information that starts with witch , that , whom , who , who’s.

    for example,
I found my sister that is on a tree witch is by a sea.
There was a rainbow that was on the window witch I drew.
there is a farm that has sheep witch I visit.

Remember – witch is with a broomstick – I think you meant which.
Don’t forget to begin sentences with a capital letter. Do you think that your first sentence sounds better without the ‘that is’?

You have looked at the challenge Simar but you haven’t completed the first bit! I was expecting a lot more detail!

    hello Mrs milliard,
this is my maths for today,

the property’s of a rectangle is
2 long equal lines in length and 2 short equal lines in length
    2 lines of summitry
    each opposing sides are parallel

the property’s of a circle is
    1 circler line
    infinite lines of summitry
    no sides are parallel

the property’s of a trapezium is
    4 different lines
    1 line of summitry
    no sides are parallel

the property’s of a parallelogram is
2 equal sides and 2 other equal sides
    1 line of summitry
    2 parallel sides

Hello Jessica. Well done for this.

Rectangle – I wouldn’t describe the lines as long or short but longer/shorter.
Trapezium – does it have any parallel sides?
Parallelogram – has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
Rhombus – has 4 sides equal in length. Often called a ‘diamond’ but ‘rhombus is the correct mathematical word.

      Remember spelling – property/properties. The properties are…..

MATHS, Rectangle, .quadrilateral, all sides are parallel,4 lines of symmetry,4 angles that are 90°and there right angled. CIRCLE,0 sides, not parallel at all, lots of lines of symmetry and has curved sides. PARALLELOGRAM,quadrilateral,3 lines of symmetry,76° and parallel on 2 sides. TRAPEZIUM,1line of symmetry,4 sides and a quadrilateral also it’s not parallel.

      Circle – side or sides?
Parallelogram – do they all have lines of symmetry? What’s 76 degrees?
Trapezium – can any of the lines be parallel?

Look at your first line – there/they’re!!

I would tell my Mum or Dad about the message that has popped up and I would also block them from being able to send me any more messages.
I think you should tell an adult about the chat and what is happening. I think this is the most sensible thing to do.

A relative clause is a sentence where you have a bit of irrelevant information that you may still want to add in.For example:
I am bored, because of this pandemic,i really need something to entertain me.
