Miranda and Prospero’s Back Story – Act 1, Scene 2

  1. ‘Tis far off

And rather like a dream than an assurance

That my remembrance warrants. Had I not Four or five women once that tended me?

  1. Twelve year since, Miranda, twelve year since,

Thy father was the Duke of Milan and A prince of power.

  1. My brother and thy uncle, call’d Antonio…

…he whom next thyself

Of all the world I loved and to him put

The manage of my state

  1. in my false brother

Awaked an evil nature…he did believe

He was indeed the duke

  1. they hurried us aboard a bark,

Bore us some leagues to sea; where they prepared

A rotten carcass of a boat, not rigg’d,

Nor tackle, sail, nor mast; the very rats

Instinctively had quit it

  1. Here in this island we arrived; and here

Have I, thy schoolmaster, made thee more profit

Than other princesses can that have more time

For vainer hours and tutors not so careful.

Can you remember what it means?

Look here again if you need help.

    Reading
    1) What does tended mean?
    Cared, looked after.
    2) How many women tended them?
    4/5.
    3) How long have they been on the island?
    12 years.
    4) What was Prospero’s title?
    Duke of Milan.
    5) Who is Antonio?
    Prospero’s brother.
    6) What did Prospero give Antonio?
Everything he had after he died.
    7) Does Prospero like his brother? How do you know?
Yes since he would’ve given him everything after he died and it is written that he loved him, but not now, after he’d banished them and sent them away.
    8) Where did Antonio put Prospero and Miranda?
Onto the boat which sent them to the lifeless island .
    9) Was the boat nice? How do you know?
Even the rats quit the boat, “a broken, destroyed boat, no rigging, nor tackle, sail, or mast; rats didn’t even want to go on there”.
    Writing
I loved him, but his evil nature, as of all humans have, came to life, if he left me alone, or if he killed me he would own all of Milan and my goods but he banished me, made me a disgrace. I had to find a new begging in a different city. He could have just put an end to my life and claimed my wealth, but why did he spare me? Now me and my beautiful daughter, Miranda, have to live in this nightmare called my life, if anyone receives this then save us.
    Maths
    7% , 70%, 71%, 73%
    Science
Yes I do, to classify is to sort into groups where in one group they all have something in common. To do that you can use a Venn Diagram
    A) Metal, plastic and wood are all solids.
    B) Water and blood are both liquids.
    C) A hot-air balloon is filled with hot air (gas), the stove uses fire which emits Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and a sponge in its ‘holes’ hold oxygen (O).
    D) Also liquids (I don’t know why they are different to B)
2 ways by colour, 4 by the symbol (spades, hearts etc.), 13 by value (2=2, king=13) 2 by if they have a number (king, queen, jack no,9, 4, 7 yes)
It is useful because you can find what you want, like when you want to find A in a dictionary you would go to the beginning since it is in alphabetical order. It makes looking for something faster.
