English (90 minutes)
Will, Billy, Lacey and Freddie have signed up to the army – there is no way back. They have their railway warrants and have been told to report to their barracks in four days time. What do you think they are expecting? Before you move on, write down your thoughts about what the army will be like in their minds.
Once you have done that, here is the next picture from the story. Look at it carefully and write down what you notice. What can you see? What do you notice?
.Now read the text below which goes with this picture. Think about what the text tells you.
Vocabulary – Here are some words from the text which you might not know:
grand – magnificent and impressive.
overwhelmed – to overcome completely; too many of something.
recruits – a person new to the army.
drills – a training exercise.
bell tents – a type of shelter for living in.
Reading – Using the text, answer these questions:
- “Being country boys, they were all good shots”. What does this suggest about the boys?
- Why did the army not have enough uniforms for all the new recruits?
- Why did Will feel foolish and disappointed in training?
- Where did the boys sleep?
- What suggests that the boys are not enjoying this experience? Give 2 pieces of evidence from the text.
Grammar – Word classes: 1 noun, 2 verbs and 3 adjectives – Find them!
- good
- army
- wearing
- exhausting
- clothes
- basic
Writing – Will writes a letter home recounting his early experiences at army training. What does he write about? Write his letter.
You could think about:
- Have his experiences in training been what he expected?
- What is the training like? (Don’t forget that Will is physically fit).
- What is it like in the tents? What about the food?
- How does he feel about joining up? Is he trying to be positive? Does he have any regrets?
- How are the other 3 boys – Freddie, Billy and Lacey?
- What can you say to reassure your parents (Will may not have wanted them to worry).
You could start:
Dear Mum and Dad
Well this isn’t what I expected.
You could end:
Don’t forget I’ll be home by Christmas.
You should look to write at least 100 words.
P.E.- 60 – 120 minutes
Don’t forget the P.E. is on a separate page/ using Jasmine.

I think that being able to shoot well might give you a good shot at staying alive, but I think it also might mean that they’ve been using guns for a long time so they actually are good shots with their guns.

Dear parents
I’ll be back, probably by Christmas, but I’ll be back
Me and my friends are very dissapointed as we even didn’t get a uniform. Because of this we feel annoyed and worthless, since everyone except us plus another few people didn’t get anything. From short and tireless days, they turned into long and exhausting. At least we got into the ‘King’s Royal Rifles’ which we don’t get what that is. All we know is that we were better at shooting than the others. Besides, we sleep in tents which a dozen people sleep in including me, Freddie, Billy (HE’S HERE EVEN THOUGH HE IS TOO YOUNG) and Lacey.
From your loving Will
Great work Franek, lots of details with thoughts and feelings.

Hi George.
Well done today.
You’re right, being country boys they would be fit and healthy (fresh air, good food and lots of exercise) but they can also shoot guns (they’ve probably been shooting rabbits and foxes since they were quite young)
wearing is a verb, but the rest of your grammar work is correct
Your letter is great, you’ve talked about the hard parts and disappointments, but also keeping positive for the future.
“Being country boys, they were all good shots”. What does this suggest about the boys? Medically fit and used to being in fields
Why did the army not have enough uniforms for all the new recruits? Too many people joined before Will and his friends
Why did Will feel foolish and disappointed in training? He was in his own clothes
Where did the boys sleep? In tents with a dozen (12) people
What suggests that the boys are not enjoying this experience? Give 2 pieces of evidence from the text.
Long days and they were exhausted

Dear mum and dad,
I’m in the barracks safely. Me, Freddie, Billy and Lacey have been signed into the King’s Royal Rifles. We have started our training and I am so tired. The days are long and exhausting. It is not what I was expecting but I didn’t want to leave my friends. We are all working harder than ever and it’s not easy. We’re living in a huge field, in tents which contains 12 of us or less. We’re all very squished whilst sleeping. The food is not nice at all, I miss your home cooking.
Don’t worry, I hope to be back by Christmas.
Love from Will
Hi Cody,
Great work on your letter. You’ve described how he is feeling, but still trying to be hopeful about the future.
Can you check your grammar- I think exhausting is an adjective, as it describes the day (long and exhausting)?
Dear Mum and Dad.
Well this isn’t what I expected. I arrived at the army camp and I was pretty tired I hoped to sleep somewhere warm in the barracks but we were given poor food and the bell tents to sleep in over night.
When we woke up we straight away did training which was embarrassing because no uniforms to us.
The training was good we trusted each other and well most of the day we were training and working our muscles out and I enjoyed it. It feels overwhelming because there are a lot of lads like me Billy, Lacey, Freddie far away from home. And I forgot to say, my friends are doing okay.
Don’t worry about the war and me, I will be the hero of the country and I am here to help and to protect our land.
Don’t forget l will be home by Christmas.
Your loving son
-Will
Great work Alex, Will sounds disappointed, but is still clearly trying to remain positive.

Great work Mia. For question 5a you would need to add your 3 answers together.
maths
1. A) 12 cm squared
B) 18 cm squared
c) 12 cm squared
2.
A) Rectangle A is 12 cm squared.
B) Rectangle B is 10 cm squared.
C) Altogether it is 22 cm squared.
3.
A) 4×12=48 3×8=24 48+24=52 so it’s 52 cm squared.
B) 7×4=28 3×5=15 28+27=55 so it’s 43 m squared.
4.
8×7=56 is for the area if you turn the shape into a square or rectangle
5×3=15 is for the area that you take away from the shape (square or rectangle)
56-15=41 cm squared because that is the area of the shape.
5.
7×10=70cm squared
7×10=70cm squared
25-7-7=11cm
4×11=44cm squared
70+70+44=184cm squared

14-5-5=4mm
6×4=24mm squared
90+24+90=204mm squared
6.
11+5+7+7+4+12=46cm
I found it hard and I had to ask for help but I understand better now.
Great work Owen. Do you mean you found the whole thing hard or the last question?
Well done for showing all your working out. Because of this I can see how you worked out question 3a, you’ve done the correct working out, but then added 48 and 24 as 52 instead of 72. In a test this would still could sitll get you some marks- so keep showing your working out!

English
Dear Mum and Dad,
I hope you are both well and not missing me too much.
The army is not what I expected. I have not been given a uniform as there is not enough to go round.
There is alot of training required which is very exhausting and no time to rest. I don’t have the chance to get much sleep either as there is so many of us sharing a tent. The food is absolutely poor and i cant wait to come home and enjoy a home cooked meal.
Good news though me and the boys have been signed into the Kings royal rifles as we are a good shot.
Eventhough things are tough i wouldn’t change a thing as i am loving every minute.
It will soon be christmas and i will be back home to celebrate with you both.
Love will
