Good morning Year 6 – Friday again!!

We look forward to seeing you all on Zoom for ‘Fancy Dress Friday’ at 9:05am.

Today at 11am, we will be having a drop-in session. Come along if you need help with anything.

https://zoom.us/j/96092292608?pwd=MmlkMUdnaFZlazhJSjJmVzZjT1B1Zz09

Meeting ID: 960 9229 2608

Passcode: gR6yxg

Warm up activity (15 minutes)

Reading (30 minutes)

Below are some of the key events that have happened in our story so far:

  • Melliphant makes fun of Tom
  • Tom was cleaning
  • London chased Salthook
  • Chudleigh Pomeroy catches Tom outside
  • The Natural History Museum was shaking
  • Tom punches Melliphant
  • Tom sneaks out to watch the little town being eaten.

As you can see these events are not in the order that they happened.

Task 1:

Organise the events in chronological (time) order.

Task 2:

Add more detail to each of the statements so that the reader has more information about what happened

i.e. explain what Melliphant was doing to make fun of Tom.

Writing (1 hour)

Today we are going to look back at the moment that Salthook was eaten by London.

Start by reading the description of this moment in the text:

The little town was so close that he could see the ant-like shapes of people running about on its upper tiers. How frightened they must be, with London bearing down on them and nowhere to hide! But he knew he mustn’t feel sorry for them: it was natural that cities ate towns, just as the towns ate smaller towns, and smaller towns snapped up the miserable static settlements. That was Municipal Darwinism, and it was the way the world had worked for a thousand years, ever since the great engineer, Nikolas Quirke, had turned London into the first Traction City. “London! London!” he shouted, adding his voice to the cheers and shouts of everybody else on the platform, and a moment later they were rewarded by the sight of one of Salthook’s wheels breaking loose. The town slewed to a halt, smokestacks snapping off and crashing down into the panicked streets, and then London’s lower tiers blocked it from view and Tom felt the deck-plates shiver as the city’s huge hydraulic Jaws came slamming down.

Now watch the clip again, where this happened:

Finally, have a look at these pictures of the moment:

Mortal Engines Honest Trailer: A Harrowing Game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos /Film

Mortal Engines: London Chase Scene - YouTube

Task:

Today, I would like you to write two diary entries.

The first diary entry will be from the viewpoint of someone who is on London.

The second diary entry will be from the viewpoint of someone who is on Salthook.

I want your diaries to really show how the two sides might be feeling with one side being the predator and one side being the prey.

Things I will be looking for:

  • Clear descriptions of feelings
  • A range of punctuation

Mainly, I want to feel how they would feel in this situation.

Maths (1 hour)

Starter challenge

Here are today’s five in five challenges:

1) 2/5 x 100 =

2) 87.321 + 9.943 =

3) 873 ÷ 21 =

4) 1/6 x 3/5 =

5) 5,652 x 10 =

6) 60 x 30

Main challenge:

Today we are going to use all of our skills and knowledge from this week to solve some reasoning problems.

Make sure you follow the following steps to help you:

Read the question

Pick out the key information

Decide what you first step is

Complete all steps

Check you have used all of the key information

1) 5639 people attended a football match. The previous week 7564 people attended a match. What is the difference in attendance figures for the two weeks?

2) A netball team is made up of 7 players. If 212 children turn up to a netball tournament, how many full teams could you make?

3)  3 friends agree to split the cost of a meal. They each pay £12.68. How much was the meal?

4) I buy a £10 phonecard, I already have £2.65 credit on my phone. I make a call costing £1.83, how much credit have I got now?

5) 24 children pay £14.65 towards a school trip. How much money is collected?

6) In a half price sale I buy a stereo for £110.65, a mobile phone cover for £3.80 and a DVD player for £126.50. What would have been the total I would have paid for these items if there had not been a sale?

7) A bus seats 52 passengers. If the school is taking 242 children and 31 adults on a school trip, how many buses will be needed?

8) Calvin paints pictures and sells them at art shows. He charges $56.25 for a large painting. He charges $25.80 for a small painting. Last month he sold six large paintings and three small paintings. How much did he make in all?

9) Brayden and Gavin were playing touch football against Cole and Freddy. Touchdowns were worth 7 points. Brayden and Gavin scored 7 touchdowns. Cole and Freddy’s team scored 9 touchdowns. How many more points did Cole and Freddy have than Brayden and Gavin?

10) On Thursday the Meat King Market sold 210 pounds of ground beef. On Friday they sold twice that amount. On Saturday they only sold 130 pounds. How much more meat did they sell on Friday than Saturday?

11) Three hundred and twenty one passengers board a train at London, and one hundred and eighty seven get off at Birmingham. How many people are still on the train?

12) There are 242 words on the page of a book and 11 words on each line. How many lines were there?

13) If 317 children are divided into 5 equal groups – how many will there be in each group, and how many left?

14) In our school there are 15 classrooms with 23 desks in each. How many desks in the school?

15) In one case of apples there are 209, in a second 221 and in a third 199. How many apples altogether?
