Tuesday 2nd February 2021
Good morning Year 6 and welcome to another day of learning!
We look forward to seeing you all on Zoom at 9:05am.
Warm up activity (15 minutes)
Complete this times tables grid – how many how you get correct?
Reading (20 minutes)
Have a read through the text below which looks at when everybody wakes up.
Titania:What angel wakes me from my flowery bed? I
pray thee, gentle mortal, sing again.
Peaseblossom, Cobweb, be kind and
courteous to this gentleman.
Meanwhile, in another part of the wood, Hermia awoke and she was sad finding herself alone. She wandered the woods searching for Lysander. In the meantime, Demetrius, not being able to find Hermia or his rival Lysander, fell asleep. Oberon saw him and realised that Puck had put the love-juice in the wrong eyes. He touched the eyelids of the sleeping Demetrius with the potion and the first person he saw was Helena.
Demetrius: O Helena, goddess, nymph, perfect,
divine!
Helena: O spite! O hell! I see you are all bent
To set against me for your merriment!
Helena now thought that both Lysander and Demetrius were teasing her. She also thought Hermia was also in on the plot! Hermia found the three of them in the wood as she was as surprised as Helena. She knew not why Lysander and Demetrius, who both loved her, now loved Helena.
Helena: Unkind Hermia, it is you have set Lysander
on to vex me with mock praises.
Hermia: I am amazed at your passionate words. I
scorn you not; it seems you scorn me.
While Helena and Hermia were speaking these angry words to each other, Demetrius and Lysander left them to fight together in the wood for the love of Helena.
Oberon: You heard that Demetrius and Lysander are
gone to seek a convenient place to fight in. I
command you to overhang the night with a
thick fog, and lead these quarrelsome lovers
so astray in the dark that they shall not be
able to find each other.
Puck: My fair Lord, this must be done quickly.
Now answer these questions:
1) What damage has Puck caused?
2) What does he need to do now?
3) What consequences might happen if he removes the spell? Why?
4) What consequences might happen if he doesn’t remove the spell? Why?
Writing (45 minutes)
Think back to the work that you completed last week on balanced arguments.
What are the features?
What is the structure?
How do you write an effective opening?
What person do you write in?
Below are a selection of different balanced arguments.
I would like you to read each one and decide what is good about it and what could be improved. Annotate the features as you go.
does_gender_affect_what_job_you_can_do (1)
Now that you have read them all, can you tell us which is your favourite balanced argument and why?
Maths (1 hour)
Starter challenge:
Here are today’s 5 in 5 questions:
1) 347 x 6 =
2) 9,832 + 124,866 =
3) 6 1/3 + 1 2/3 =
4) 3.43 x 3 =
5) 2/5 x 3 =
Main activity:
Think back to yesterday’s maths – what can you remember?
Can you remember what we call this?
Its a 1 quadrant grid.
Today, we will look at 2 quadrant grids e.g.
What do you notice that is different?
Now you can see that the y axis is also on the left of the grid and this time it contains negatives numbers. For a 2 quadrant grid we need 2 x axis but still only 1 y axis.
Can you remember the rule for reading and plotting coordinates?
Along the corridor and up the stairs.
This rule still applies.
Let’s have a look at an example:
Lets look at a first.
Along the x axis, a is -5
Up the y axis, a is 3
The coordinates are (-5,3)
Now lets look at b.
B is -4 along the x axis and 7 up the y axis.
The coordinates are (-4,7)
Can you figure out the coordinates for d?
Now try these?
Now let’s look at how we plot coordinates on a 2 quadrant grid.
The coordinates I need to plot are:
(4, 5)
(-2, 3)
(-7, 6)
Let’s start with (4, 5)
For this we are going 4 along the x axis and 5 up the y axis:
Next we are looking at (-2,3)
For this, we need to go -2 along the x axis and 3 up the y axis:
The next one is (-7,6)
For this we need to go -7 along the x axis and 6 up the y axis:
Now you have a go:
Draw your own 2 quadrant coordinate graph or use the template below:
Now plot the following data onto it:
(-2, 3)
(3, 4)
(-5, 4)
(-6, 6)
(1, 1)
Spelling (15 minutes)
Have a look at these sentences. In each sentence, there is a circled word that is spelt incorrectly . Can you spell it correctly?
RE (1 hour)
Today we are going to look at someone else who led people to freedom.
Our question today is:
Was Nelson Mandela a good leader?
Think back to last week. How many of the ten commandments can you name?
The book of Exodus is the second book in the Old Testament. It tells the story of the Israelites being freed from slavery through the leadership of Moses. People all over the world are still faced with struggles for freedom and justice.
Can you think of any examples?
Watch this video and read the information to learn more about Nelson Mandela
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjkj382/articles/zj3p8xs
Have a think about what you have learnt about Moses and Nelson Mandela.
How were they similar as leaders?
Do you think Nelson Mandela would have wanted the same ten commandments? Why?
Read the information at the following link:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/25262272#:~:text=%22I%20have%20fought%20against%20white,live%20for%20and%20to%20achieve
What qualities do you think Nelson Mandela had?
Task:
Write a paragraph or 2 explaining what part Moses and Nelson Mandela played in the freedom and justice they achieved for the people they led. Remember to include evidence about what you have learnt about both people.
Finally, answer the following question:
Do you know of any people in the world today who have been stripped of their rights and freedom?
PHSE (1 hour)
Today, I would like you to finish your ‘Online Safety’ project for younger children so that it is ready to be used.
When you have finished it, please let us know:
- What you have done.
- Which year group or age it is suitable for.
- Can people play it alone or does it need more than 1 player?
- Would they need help from an adult to play it?
Finally, if you are able to, send us it through e-mail or send us a picture of it.
TT Rockstars
Please continue this week’s competition – who will win the certificates?
Story Time
Enjoy today’s chapter of The Explorer and maybe catch up on any that you have missed.
Well done for another great day of learning Year 6!
See you in the morning!

Fantastic, well done!
Puck cause an fight beetween lystander and Demetrius.
And there fighting over helen.
And he need to remove the spell
Or things can get very bad.
And is he dose remove the spell anything could happen
Like let say Demetrius get ill
Good Hassan. What could happen if he doesn’t remove the spell? Why?
Reading;
1. He has caused Helena and Hermia to loose there friendship and made Hermia not be loved by the love of her life .
2.Take the love potion of Lysanders eyes or put more on but make the first person he sees is Hermia and do the same with Demetrius .
3.They could mess up and make everyone fall in love with a plant and why i think this is because trying to take it of could damage them selves completely and they could not love who they loved before .
4.Hermia will never love again and Helena will be very angry and humiliated and Puck would have to live with what he did .
Some great answers Evie. I like your plan for what Puck should do.
writing
1.The features are there is a debate about wether kids should have mobile phones or they shouldn’t .
2.The structure is there is a balanced argument and theres a yes and no side of the debate .
3.By starting by saying all the bad and good things and then start explaining why there is two sides of the story .
4.3rd person
Which is your preferred text and why?
lystander and Demetrius would be still fighting he did not remove the spell
They would indeed!
R.E: Danielius
Mosses was warning Rammasies that really bad things will happen
that could kill lots of Egyptians in Egypt plagues, Storms, and fire raining from the sky
Nelson Mandela blew up places warning the people that if they carry
on treating black people like this he will carry on lowing up things that
could hurt someone or worse kill them.
Some good thoughts Dan. What qualities did they both have as leaders?
They both looked after there people .
Why did people follow them?
