English – Writing – Friday 29th January

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PUCK

Yesterday, you investigated the character of Puck using the resources below.

Your task today is to write about a day in the life of Puck.

Think about the kind of things they would get up to in the woods. What would they do? Who would they be with?

Many of you yesterday recognised that Puck was a character who could be both magic and silly. Think about how you can show this in your writing.

It is up to you if you write in the first or third person.

Don’t forget the punctuation pyramid! You can also use the resources from yesterday to help you with ideas.

You should spend between 30 and 40 minutes on this.

WHO IS PUCK?

Today, we are going to get to know one of the most popular characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Puck.

We will start looking at Puck in our 11 o’clock Zoom. The first thing that we will do is read, enjoy and think about some of Puck’s quotes which are shown here.

Task 1 – What do these quotes suggest about Puck?

Task 2 – Read the character profile below. Write 3 things that you learn about Puck?

Task 3 – Watch this video of Puck and Oberon. How does Puck come across to you in this scene?

Task 4 – Here are some pictures of Puck from previous RSC performances of A Midsummer Nights Dream. Look through them and think about how Puck is presented in different performances. What is the same and what is different? Also, write down any words and phrases to describe Puck.

You should spend between 60 and 90 minutes on this, including the Zoom session.

In each performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the characters are presented in different ways, depending on the theme and setting of that version. The clothes can help say different things about the character.

        Hello Michael

Well done, you have made some good points here.

It is interesting that you say how Puck gets the job done but in his way. Do you think that Puck should listen to Oberon more?

In different performances of the play, the characters are presented in a particular way depending on the theme of the play. The story is the same but each director makes a decision on where and when the play is based, and what the characters will look like. Which of the 4 Pucks is your favourite?

    task 1
The quotes suggest that Puck is mischevious and loves to prank people.

    Task 2
    A) That Puck is oberons mischeif maker.
    B) That he uses his powerful magic to cause mischeif.
    C) That he likes to cause a lot of mischeif and loves to play tricks on humans.

    task 3
He comes across me as loyal servant who likes to cause mischeif. He also cames across me
as a silly person but in someway smart. He likes to use his magic not only by his masters command
but sometimes uses it when he wants to.

    task 4
Same: That the photos was taken when they were acting. They are all based on Puck.
different: Their costumes, there facial expresions and the people that play them.

Puck is silly, mischievous and naughty. His clothes are different and parshly made up as nobody knew how william shakespeare designed Puck.

I really like he contrast you give of Puck being silly but smart.

I wonder why he is so loyal to Oberon?

With the different Pucks from the different performances, each director would decide the overall theme of the play and how the character is going to be presented. Some performances of Shakespeare plays are done in a modern setting, as if it was happening today.

You have noticed that Puck is often played by a male but has been played by a female.

The words you use to describe Puck show what a varied character they are.

What is your opinion of them?

      Hello Franek

You make lots of good points here.

Do you think that Puck causes trouble on purpose? Do you think he thinks through what he is doing?

I wonder why Puck is loyal to Oberon?

It’s an interesting point that you make about Puck being played by a female in one performance. This will have been a deliberate decision for this performance of the play. Do you think it makes any difference to the play?

Deep in the forest, in the middle of the night, magic flew around reflecting off the moonlit trees. A fairy called Puck appeared out of nowhere with another fairy and they were talking about Oberon and Titania.
“Oberon is jealous of the changeling boy and keeps arguing with Titania.” said Puck to the fairy. “Quick, here they come!” he shouts and they both disappeared behind a tree.

The next morning, Puck woke up and couldn’t wait to play some naughty tricks to pull off on humans. He had lots of ideas to be mischievous. He made his porridge to get hyped up ready to play those naughty tricks. He laughs at himself and gets excited. When he had finished, he left his fairy house and cartwheeled his way to the city of Athens to find people to play these silly tricks on. “Woohoo! Wheeee! Yay! I love being a silly fairy!” he shouted in excitement.
He found a restaurant to hide in and sat quietly, with a big smile and rubbed his hands together, waiting for his first victim. A group of people came in and were shown to a table near to Puck. This was his perfect opportunity! A man went to sit down and Puck sneakily ran behind the chair and pulled it away. The man fell down on his bottom and everyone in the restaurant laughed and pointed. The man was very annoyed but was confused as well because he didn’t know how that happened.

      Hello Cody

You have done really well with this. It is a good start. You have referred to details from the play and used your imagination. It flows nicely and you have used a range of sentences. I like the idea of Puck “cartwheeling” to Athens!

Are you writing direct speech? If so, you will need inverted commas.

Could you write about other things that Puck does? There are ideas in the resources about Puck.

In the video, Puck does not say much. Do you think Puck is listening to Oberon when he talks? Puck is Oberon’s servant after all.
