Year 5- Wednesday 20th January

Buenas dias todos!   Como estas?   Soy Bueno.

Good day everyone.  How are you?   I’m doing well.

Registration task

Maths- 75 minutes

Gaining confidence

Have another go at 3 x 1 digit.

https://vimeo.com/486775113

Something to think about

Have another go at 3 digit x 2 digit

Here is the video clip we used last week,  and a powerpoint that might help.

https://vimeo.com/488555095

3 x 2 digit

Challenge yourself

The video link and powerpoint above might help if you need a reminder.

English- 90 minutes

Task 1-  reread the text. –  there are some great readings of this by children (and their families) in year 5 on the wow work blog.

Task 2-

What does Lysander mean by “to you our minds we will unfold”?

Why does Hermia say “the more I hate, the more he follows me”?

What does “Exit Hermia and Lysander” mean?

Which 2 words mean “to go after someone”?

Task 3-  Writing- at least 100 words today please!

It’s time for the next paragraph of our story.

Here’s mine so far.   You should have at least 200 words already..

The curtain rises on Athens,  a white and golden city, bright and joyous as a wedding cake.  Everywhere there was celebration for the marriage of Duke Theseus to Hipployta, the Queen he had won in battle.  Their happiness spread through the whole of the city.  People had decorated their houses with flowers and left lamps burning in their windows at night,  so that the streets twinkled like a city of stars.  Everyone seemed joyful and excited as they prepared to celebrate.  But in the midst of this happiness , there was a speck of misery, like a sour plum…

A few days before the much awaited wedding, Egeus  (a well respected citizen of Athens) bought his daughter, Hermia, to the court of Duke Theseus.   Grabbing her by the arm Egeus dragged her in front of all the noble guests gathered there.   He explained that he was angry with her because she was refusing to marry the man of his choice, Demetrius.   He complained that another man, Lysander, had bewitched Hermia and won her over with gifts and trinkets.   Egeus demanded the Duke uphold the law and allow him the right to force Hermia to marry the man of his choice, or die.   Duke Theseus did not seem happy with this, but he could not deny the law. Hermia must marry Demetrius. Or die!

Now we must add the paragraph explaining what happens next.

  •  Hermia and Lysander meeting in the marketplace (lots of description please)
  •  Helena coming to talk to Hermia
  •  Helena trying to decide what to do –  the questions, exclamations and sentences you came up with today.

Remember you can use direct speech ( ” “) or reported speech, as I have done in paragraph 2 ( he explained that he was angry with her)

I want to see a good range of punctuation and some great vocab.

Bonus points if you can use-  metaphor (including personification), simile,  fronted adverbials,  a triple sentence.

Spanish- 30 minutes=

This week we’re going to look at families, using the word “tengo” = I have

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zh7wqp3/articles/z34q4xs

Task 1

Work through the activity, and try the quiz.

Task 2

Then see if you can translate my sentence-   Tengo dos hermanas y un hermano.

Task 3

Can you tell me about your family?

P.E.-  see the blog/ Jasmine- 1 hour

Hi Saheera great work on b and c.
Have another look at a, we have 3 in the units for both parts of the calculation, so 3 x 3 = ….?
      d should be 325 x 5.
If you’re still not sure, maybe go back to the grid method, and then see if you can do the column method to check your answer?

      Hi Ellie,
did you look at the video?
      233 x 3, if we estimate 3 x 200, it’s 600. So your answer is a bit small.
Have another look at this, but make sure you have watched the video please.

A few days before the much awaited wetting, Egeus  (a well respected citizen of Athens) bought his daughter, Hermia, to the court of Duke Theseus.   Grabbing her by the arm Egeus dragged her in front of all the noble guests gathered there.   He explained that he was angry with her because she wouldn’t listen to her father. Egeus does not trust Lysander but he does know Demetrius is a good man, more than Lysander, this is what he thinks. The reason why Egeus hates Lysander is because he tries to trick Hermia by sending her love token and sweet messages. This makes Egeus angry because he has already chosen Demetrius to marry Hermia and if Hermia doesn’t marry Demetrius, she will die. Egeus asks the Duke to help him with Hermia, Demetrius and Lysander and to tell Hermia the consequences of what will happen if she doesn’t follow the law.

Hermia and Lysander meet up at the marketplace with fruits, people, tents and water. People are shouting ”Come and get your fruit!” The marketplace was extremely noisy. ”We need to go some where else.” said Hermia.
”Its fine,we can get food and water and anyway its just noisy thats all.” Lysander said to Hermia,” We need to talk about our plan to get you away from Athens.”
“Oh…okay. But where would we go?” Asked Hermia.
Suddenly, Helena walks through a crowd of people to unexpectedly find Hermia and Lysander in the middle of their secret plan.
“Oh fair Helena, what are you doing here?” asks Hermia. “I am not fair Hermia, Demetrius does not think so.” Helena says, sadly. Lysander speaks up and says excitedly, “Do not worry, Helena, once we leave Athens, you can have Demetrius for yourself!”
Hermia and Lysander then start walking away through the crowded marketplace, leaving Helena with her thoughts.
“I wonder what shall I do? Risk our friendship and tell Demetrius their plans?
But finally, with Hermia gone, Demetrius will be mine!
This is the only way I can get him to fall in love with me!”

Hermia says that because she hates Demetruis but he loves her
Stage directions-Hermia and Lysander leave the stage
    Folllows me

Hermia and Lysander meet at the marketplace and together they speak. But they only whispered. They thought someone was listening to them as if the trees were spying for Egeus. But they were honest and open. “Can’t we just run away now” asked Hermia but the reply of her love was not yet. So they spoke honestly and laughed together and their plan. It was cunning as cunning as a fox. The marketplace was full of richer people but they found an empty place to speak. They were normal people and like everyone hated the laws of this civilzed, beautiful and full place…

“Look here’s Helena!” they both gasped. They tried to act innocent but you can tell they’re up to something. “What are you doing here fair Helena,” Hermia stresfully asked. “Fair FAIR, me, fair?!” strictly replied Helena. “We are as fair as each other though” Hermia explained. We are muttered Helena. The couple of Hermia and Lysander walked away…

Is that your answer for one of the questions in task 2?
I think he means they will explain their plan to Helena.

    Task 2-

What does Lysander mean by “to you our minds we will unfold”?
I don’t know what it means sorry?

Why does Hermia say “the more I hate, the more he follows me”?
As the more Hermia hates Demetrius the more he fowllows her.

What does “Exit Hermia and Lysander” mean?
If you were doing a play exit Hermia and Lysander would mean yhey would exit the scene.

Which 2 words mean “to go after someone”?
    Flight and god speed ?

    Task 3 –

As the curtain rises, the city of Athens is full of joy. There is a wedding between Duke Theseus
and Hipployta. There is also a giant wedding cake. People decorated their windows with flowers and sweet sents of candles. The street even the entire city dazzled like stars exept for one house. There was a speck of misery and it can spread like wildfire. It was like a sour plum spreading its sourness. A few days before the wedding Egeus brought her daughter to the court Egeus was very angry.

Hermia should not go into the woods as there could be potential dangers as there could be danger as animals could attack or kill them. They could get lost and have to survive in the wild. They could also come out at the wrong time and get into trouble by Egeus and other members of the court of Athens.
She could even get punished and Lysander will get punished too. So Hermia should chose marriage with Demetrius or get sent to death.

At the middle of the night Hermia met up with Lysander to discuss their plan. The plan was to sneak into the woods and hide there. But they felt like someone was wachting them. Then they thought they were being silly and laughed. Their plan was as easy as cooking a cake. So the next night, they was just about to put their plan into action but then Helena arrived and asked what was going on. Hermia and Lysander explaned their plan, and as soon as Helena left they put their plan in action again.
For the first few days everything went as planed but then they heard Demetrius coming and thought that Helena told him their plan.

HI flight and god speed do mean follow, but I think the one in the text is pursue

I love the final paragraph, but the one that starts Hermia should not into the woods doesn’t really fit there. Maybe it could move to the end? You can’t really start talking about going into the woods before you’ve mentioned the plan.

    I have read it.
I think that Lysander means that him and Hermia will still love each other

I think Hermia means the more she hates him the more he will love him .

It means that they should stop loving each other.

The sun had rose from the edges of the Athens the city had been as bright as the sun covered with gold with a beautiful wedding cake . Egeus grabbed his daughter as if it were a blanket as Hermia wondered why Lysander had bewitched her. Demetrius had been awaiting for Hermia . Hermia’s father had told her marry Demetrius or die. Soon Hermia had met Lysander in the market place. Then Helena was talking to Hermia .Helena had tried to talk Hermia to do something for herself .”If you love Lysander why don’t you tell your father about it said in a confused voice”.

Wow Finlay, this is your best writing so far this year! I’ve added a few commas, question marks and full stops, and put the speech (new speaker new line) and there were a couple of verbs in the wrong tense. But This is fab. Please can I add it to the wow work blog page?

In the market a very nervous Hermia and Lysander met to go over the plan, to escape Athens and go to the forest. They spoke quietly- in case someone was spying on them for Egeus, who was still unhappy with his daughter, Hermia for disobeying him “Can’t we just leave Athens now and go to the forest? ” said Hermia
Lysander replied “Not yet my love, we must be patient and leave when nobody is looking!”
They spoke about their plan and made sure that no detail was left out, they checked it thoroughly, in a quiet corner of the market place to try and avoid being seen. The marketplace was very noisy and busy, this made them uncomfortable.
Suddenly Helena appeared in the market place, walking through the crowd and straight over to where Hermia and Lysander stood.
“Helena what is someone as fair as you doing in the marketplace?” Hermia Asked
“I wished Demetrius thought I was fair!” said Helena
So not to reveal any parts of their plan, Hermia and Lysander left the Marketplace. Leaving Helena alone, wondering what Hermia and Lysander were planning.

The story starts in a joyful, excited city called Athens. That is a city which is golden and white
and people enjoy it here ”mostly” .
People had decorated their houses with flowers and left lamps burning in their windows at night, so that the streets twinkled like a city of stars, for special wedding. But in the midst of this happiness, there is a tiny TINY speck of misery, like a sour plum. Athens is a decent sized city.( which means a BIG!
    BIG! city.)

Recently in Athens one crazy thing happened, which was one woman(called Hermia) is in love with someone his dad Egeus hates and Hermia’s dad wants her to marry a different person so he has no option but to kill Hermia or let her to marry Demetrius. Egeus starts his speech on Theseus’s court passionately. He explains that Lysander cunningly tricked Hermia into falling in love with him. How embarrassing it must have been for her to be told off in front of so many people. Her life now in danger, as if she refuses to marry Demetrius, she can be killed with her dad’s consent. How cruel that would be. Not very caring father, is he?

It was a busy day at the marketplace. People wandering around and trying to get the best deals. ”I’ve got the best tomatoes in Athens!” shouted excitedly a local seller. ”I don’t believe it, surely mine are better!” replied even louder another stall owner.
Suddenly Hermia and Lysander showed up between all the quarrelling. ”Oh, calm down people!” Hermia screamed at the sellers, laughing at the same time.
Then her face expression changed again and she was sad, like a crying goat. She noticed Helena walking through the marketplace buying some kale. ”Good speed fair Helena, whither away?” asked kindly Hermia. Helena was upset and explained she felt unloved by Demetrius. Lysander and Hermia revealed to her their plan to escape Athens to Helena. Hermia tried to comfort Helena by saying ”Helena, to you our minds we will unfold. Through Athens’ gates have we devised to steal”.
Then Hermia and Lysander left to hide, as they were worried someone might have followed them. Helena was on her own again and thinking to herself ”I wish I could marry Demetrius, how to make him love me?”. She decided to tell him about the lovers plan with the hope Demetrius will appreciate her honesty. But then she’s risking her friendship with Hermia at the same time.

    English Task 2
    * What does Lysander mean by ”to you our minds we will unfold”? It means that they reveal their plan to Helena, they tell her their secret.

    * Why does Hermia say “the more I hate, the more he follows me”?
Hermia feels that whatever she does, Demetrius falls in love with her even more. So the more she disapproves him, the more he’s interested in her.

*What does “Exit Hermia and Lysander” mean?
That means what the characters are doing, so they’re leaving the scene.

*Which 2 words mean “to go after someone”?
    – follow
    – pursue

    English task 3

The curtain rises in Athens, a good sandy city. There is happiness throughout the city for the marriage of Duke Theseus and Hipployta. People had decorated there houses with lights that filled the night sky like they were stars.A few days before the much awaited wedding, Egeus (a well respected citizen of Athens) bought his daughter, Hermia, to the court of Duke Theseus. Grabbing her by the arm Egeus dragged her in front of all the noble guests gathered there. He explained that Lysander has bewitched his daughter by giving her gifts. Hermia makes it clear she is in love with Lysander. Therefore Egeus tells Hermia she has 4 days to choose between love and death.

I think Hermia should run away with Lysander because she is in love with him. I dont think anybody should have to marry somebody that they dont love. She also go because her father is really unpleasant, as choosing between a man you don’t love and death is cruel.
I dont think Hermia should run away with Lysander because her father will hun them down and kill her.
Hermia will always be living her life in fear, wondering if her father will find her. Hermia and Lysander will find it hard to survive. Hermia should do as her father wishes and marry Demetrius.

Hermia heads of to the agora (market) to meet lysander to go over the escape plan. The market is so crowded with different social gatherings, and people shopping for various things such as olives and wine. Helena approaches unexpectedly and over hears the conversation between Lysander and Hermia. Hermia and Lysander decide to tell Helena there plan but to keep it a secret. “How can you leave Demetrius he loves you. ” said Helena.
“I don’t love Demetrius. ” said Hermia in shock. As Helena leaves Hermia and Lysander are left wondering if she will keep there secret. Helena is left conflicted about her discission to tell Demetrius or keep her best friends secret. If I tell him will he hate me or love me.

      Hello Mia

This is really well written and flows nicely. It is an easy to follow account of this scene and you have tried hard to vary your sentence structures and vocabulary used.
The only part that I would really develop is the second paragraph. This is because you start writing in the first person having previously written in the third person. Their is no problem with the points you make but try to write them in the same style as paragraphs 1 and 3. You could maybe talk about the dilemma she is going through and the different thoughts going through her head.

Also, get their and there he right way round! In paragraph one you talk about “there” houses – is that the right one?

Top work Mia – keep it going!
