Year 2 Home Learning – Monday 11th January

Good Morning Year 2

We know it’s a little bit different learning from home, but we are here if you need any help. We know you can do this!

Remember we have a zoom register at 10.20am every morning. It is important you log in to this promptly so that we can say good morning to each other, give you instructions for today’s learning, complete our Phonics lesson as well as working through our Reading and Writing activities together.

A link for this has been sent to the parent email you have registered at school. Please email us at the Year 2 email address if you need a new link sending to you.

Please bring paper and a pencil/pen to the zoom register.

Please remember to comment on the blog when you have completed your tasks, and to email us your completed work so we can see what you have been doing and support you if needed. Work can be emailed via your pupil email address (details were issued last term) or via a parents email address to yeartwo@lingsprimary.org.uk.

Have a great day and we will be waiting for you when we can all go back to school together!

Miss Duncan, Miss Battams and the rest of the Year 2 team.

Here is your home learning for today.

English – Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Task.

Think about how we use the conjunctions or and but when we are writing sentences that compare different things. They are both words used to join two short sentences or clauses together rather than writing two separate sentences. This helps to make your writing more interesting for the reader because they will read longer sentences rather than lots of short, simple sentences.

Copy these sentences and choose which word you put into each of these sentences to finish them. Remember you can only use but and or.

When I go to the park I could play football ________ I could play on the swings.
I like to drink orange juice _________ I don’t like the taste of apple juice.
When I go to school I could walk ________ I could go on the bus.
My favourite food is pizza _________ I also like eating cheese.

English – Reading

Read the following text and look at the picture.

The sunlight drifts down through the leaves of the tall trees overhead as the branches sway in the breeze. You can hear the wind whispering as it blows against your face, as you walk over the muddy, fern covered and leafy floor. If you stretch out a hand, you can feel the rough, bumpy and gnarled bark on one of the glorious trees. Taking a deep breath, you can smell the scent of the mud and the pretty, colourful flowers growing nearby. This place makes you feel happiness and calm as you enjoy the nature around you.  In the distance, you can see small creatures scurrying quickly between the leafy, green bushes trying not to be spotted by the human visitors to this place. You can hear the trickling of a small stream and you can lean down to feel the coolness of the fresh, clear water. As you jump over the stepping stones, you discover an apple tree on the other side. You can carefully pick an apple and taste the delicious sweetness of the fruit

The text describes somewhere that you could visit.

  1. Where do you think the place is and why do you think that? What evidence is there in the text to support your answers?
  2. Who do you infer lives in the place and why do you think this? Remember, infer means what you think when you look at the evidence you have in the text.

You should write this as two sentences using capital letters, full stops and your phonics for spellings.

English – Writing

Think about what the place would be like if you were there. Can you write a sentence for each of the senses to tell us what the place is like?

In the forest, I can see…
As I walk, I can smell…
My ears are filled with the sound of…
During my walk, I can feel…
Carefully, I can taste …

For example: In the place, I can hear the wind whistling quietly in the tall trees.

  • You should try to start each sentence in a different way to keep your writing interesting. You should also use adjectives to describe the place in more detail.
  • You should use capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in each of your sentences.
  • You should try to present your work neatly like you would in class.
  • Use your knowledge of phonics to help with your spellings.
  • Read your sentences back when you have finished to check they make sense.

Science

Watch the following BBC Bitesize Science lesson about the human life cycle.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgssgk7/articles/z2msv4j

There are six stages in the human life cycle.

Are these descriptions in the correct order?

1. Foetus

At this time, a baby is growing inside its mum’s womb.

2. Adulthood

Your body is fully developed.

3.Old age

The last stage in the life cycle of a human.

4. Adolescence

Children become teenagers.

5. Baby

A baby is born after spending nine months inside the womb.

6.  Childhood

At this stage, you learn to walk and talk.

Draw and label the life cycle of a human. You can present in a circle or in a life.

PSHE – Online Learning

Read the following text. With an adult in your house talk about what should you do?

Reading/Story

We have an online log in which will link to some ebooks that follow our reading scheme in school. These books will allow your child to practice their phonics skills. It is a free resource.

Follow this link to log in: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/?selLanguage=en&mode=hub

Go to Oxford Owl for Home and click on enter site.
This will give you the option to choose a book recommended for your age or you can choose a book from the colour you read at school.
These are all free to read and it would be great if you could read one to someone at home.

Remember to leave us a comment on the blog to share your learning or you can email it to me at yeartwo@lingsprimary.org.uk.

We look forward to seeing your work!

This photo is taken in a forest with big trees all around and on the ground there are ferns, moss and nettles.
Birds live in the trees, and under the plants on the ground, spiders, mouths, vipers and mice.

In the forest I see… lots of trees
    As I walk, I smell… fresh leaves
My ears are filled with the sound of… animals
While walking, I feel… fresh air
    Careful, I smell… raspberries
