Morning Year 6

I hope you had a lovely weekend and you are ready to get back to some hard work!

I hope to see you all on Zoom at 9:05  (remember to e-mail me if you need any help).

Warm up activity (15 minutes)

As always on a Monday morning, you have a retrieval quiz.

Retrieval Quiz

Reading (30 minutes)

Go to:

https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/ancient-greece/athens/

and spend some time reading the information about Athens. Make sure you click on the labels so that you can learn more about Athens.

Thinking back to the work we completed on the forest at the end of last week, answer the following question:

What would be different about living in a forest compared to Athens?

How might it sound different?

Would the atmosphere be different? How?

Where would you prefer to be (Athens or a forest) and why?

Writing (40 minutes)

Have another look at the image that we used last week showing the forest (this time it includes some of your ideas)

Forest

Today, I would like you to use your description of Athens from last week and the work that we have completed on the forest to complete a comparison description. This is where we compare the two settings throughout our description.

For example:

Athens is an ancient, powerful city made of stone and magnificent buildings whereas the forest is timeless with majestic trees that tower over people like giants. Whilst Athens appears to be crumbling to nothing more than rubble, the forest remains strong and powerful withstanding the test of time.

Things I would like to see included:

  • A range of powerful adjectives
  • Relative clauses
  • Similes
  • Personification
  • A range of punctuation

Make sure you read through your work and edit it to make improvements.

I look forward to reading them!

Maths (1 hour)

Starter challenge:

You will be pleased to know we are back to our 5 in 5 (they just look a bit different).

Try and answer the following questions in 5 minutes (get someone to time you in you can)

1) 3.43 x 100 =

2) 1.32 x 3 =

3) 3/7 of 28 =

4) 43 x 21 =

5) 1,664 + 2,349 =

Main task:

This week we are going to be focusing on the perimeter and area of shapes. Do you know what these word mean?

Perimeter – the distance all the way around the outside of a 2D shape.

e. g.       The perimeter is the red line around the shape.

Area – the measurement of space inside a 2D shape.

e.g         The area is the red space inside the shape.

Today we will focus on the perimeter.

To find the perimeter, we simply need to

calculate the distance around the space.

For example:

To find the distance around the shape? We simply add all of the sides together.

10cm + 5cm + 10cm + 5cm = 30cm

The perimeter of this shape is 30cm.

All I have had to do is add the sides.

Here is one for you to try:

What is the perimeter?

The same rules apply when there are decimals as measurements e. g.

You simply just add all of the sides together

10.5cm + 7.6cm + 10.5cm + 7.6cm = 36.2cm

The perimeter is 36.2cm

This rules applies for all shapes not just rectangles.

Now try these for yourself.

Perimeter

Some times we might be asked to find the perimeter for a question like this:

We can still find the perimeter but how?

How can we use the information that we have and our knowledge of shapes to find the perimeter?

We simply need to find the lengths of the missing sides using our knowledge of rectangles.

I know that rectangles have 2 sets of equal sides so I can easily find the missing lengths.

Now I can add all of the sides.

11cm + 8.2cm + 11cm + 8.2cm = 38.4cm

The perimeter is 38.4 cm

Now you try.

Perimeter 2

Challenge

Sometimes we might be given a shape and the perimeter i.e.

Our job this time is to use the information to find the length of the missing side

To do this, we need to use all of the information and work backwards.

I know that if 1 length is 14cm, then the other length will be too.

That means I have already used 28cm Now I need to find out what is left for the other 2 sides.

34 – 28 = 6cm

6 cm left shared between the 2 sides

6 divided by 2 = 3

The missing length is 3cm

Now your turn

Perimeter challenge

Independent Reading time (30 minutes)

As always on a Monday, it is time for some independent reading.

Spend some time reading a book of your choice or make a free account at

and read online books for free.

You could also spend some of this time on your Read Theory account. E-mail me if you need your login.

History (1 hour)

Our topic this term is called

The Ancient Kingdom of Benin

What do you know from this title?

Do you know anything about Benin?

This week’s question is

When in history and where in the world can the Kingdom of Benin be found?

Task 1:

Have a look at these cards:

Can you decide when in history they happened?

Can you put them in time order?

Can you add any extra information about each picture?

Vocabulary:

Dynasty – a family of rulers who rule over a country for a long period of time.

Source – a picture, text or object that tells us something about history.

Kingdom – a country ruled by a King or a Queen.

Task 2:

Have a look at this timeline

Timeline

Think about:

  • When did the Kingdom of Benin happen?
  • Was it before or after other ancient kingdoms?
  • What else was happening in British history at the same time?

The Ancient Kingdom of Benin was far later than other ancient kingdoms i.e. The Egyptians so why do you think it was called ancient?

Task 3:

Have a look at this map which shows you where the Ancient Kingdom of Benin happened.

The ancient city of Benin was found in the country that we now call Nigeria in the continent of Africa.

Here is a closer map of modern Benin City which is where the ancient kingdom was located.

There is a lack of written sources and so it is difficult to actually KNOW about Benin. However, there was a strong story telling tradition in Benin so events, information and knowledge was handed on using this tradition.

Have a read of this tradition story from Benin

Creation story 1

Task 3:

Over the next 6 weeks, we will be creating an information booklet/document to present everything that we have learnt about Benin.

You could create:

  • An information leaflet
  • A PowerPoint presentation
  • A scrap book of information
  • Something of your own

The choice is yours.

This week, decide what style you will use to present your information and begin by writing up about what you have learnt today.

Spelling (15 minutes)

Have some fun playing Spelling Snowball

    1. the difference is that Athens is probably going to be really noisy but the forest is really calm.
    2. The atmosphere will be very different because Athens has a lot of buildings but the forest just has tees and bushes.
3.I would prefer to be in Athens because it has more people to interact with but in the forest you might be really lonely.

Busy that is hoe I describe Athens because it is a city which means that it will be full of people . but the opposite of busy is calm and that is how I would describe the forest because it has got lots of swaying trees and it has not got any human that live there it has just got tiny, big creatures .

Also the difference is the sound the forest is really quiet but the city is really loud.

The city of Athens is what you call opposite of a forest,Amazing Athens was an assiduous, industrious city as the peoplewould wear long tumerics they looked as a tree which was taken over in algae whilst the forest was a deep dark place looming with mysterious creatures and branches in the wind would blow gently howling words at you it felt as if you were dreaming but that dream did not last long the both settings are a complete opposite the Athens. The Athens was full with buildings but the forest was reclusive of buildings

    Writing

Athens is one of the oldest places on earth. It was very busy with bustling people selling stuff, arguing, talking, buying thing like fruit. It was very powerful at the time. Some of the buildings are still standing today. Powerful, fearless, bustling city is crowed at the town square.

    1. Which one is more peaceful
In Athens there’s lots of people and theaters so Athens is probably very nosy especially if there was a war . However, in a forest it is probably calm but not too peaceful because of the wild animals, the are not too many people who will be living there.
    2. Which one is more fun?
In Athens there are theaters you can make lots of friends at and do lots of stuff. However, in the forest it’s easy too find pets so really chopping wood and hunting is probably the best.
    3. Which one is more safe?
In Athens they have stone walls around their city and a powerful army but in a forest you will need to protect yourself.
